Large Chelsea Base & Ball ship's bell clock with Special Grand 10" dial @ 1920s
Large dial Chelsea Base and Ball solid bronze ship's bell mantel clock @ early 1920s. This is an extremely rare clock that came out of an estate recently, where it was maintained and in regular use - this clock is in excellent original as found condition. The case has been polished and lacquered at some point in the past, and looks great, although it could have it's original antique bronze finish restored if desired. The case has an amazing look, a real work of art, and very impressive at 15 1/2" tall x 15 1/2" wide x 5" deep, and weighing in at 31 pounds. No damage or missing pieces to the case. The fancy Special Grand 10" diameter dial is excellent with its original finish and signature, being signed for the retailer J.E. Caldwell, Philadelphia. Great original fancy hands. The 8 day movement is marked Chelsea and serial number 137362, which matches the serial number stamped into the wooden base of the case, and dates between 1920 to 1924. It is complete and intact with good mainsprings, running strongly and accurately with it's original lever escapement, and striking ship's bells on the hours and half hours on its original gong, but is sold without any warranty. Rare Art Nouveau Domed Architectural Bronze Clock by Edward Caldwell
A VERY FINE ART NOUVEAU DOMED ARCHITECTURAL TABLE CLOCKEdward F. Caldwell & Co., New York, circa early 20th century | an unsigned documented exampleItem # 307PQH13X An incredibly intricate Art Nouveau table clock from the renowned firm of Edward F. Caldwell, it is a brilliant architectural work that insinuates a domed cathedral of the Renaissance. This particular clock design is catalogued in the archival records of the Smithsonian Library and Archives (Large Portfolio 84, p. 5, # A025762). It features a cast bronze finial of opposing harpies rising from cornucopia that the Caldwell firm used in several of their designs (for example, as the central motif raising a pair of candelabra branches in # A25571, Smithsonian archives, see enclosed image) situated over a domed top with applied pierced bronze elements that are intricately chiseled and bright-engraved to create a complex endlessly swirling collection of fretwork surrounding ecclesiastical imagery of classical figures, putti and angels. The fretwork in the canted corners of the dome hint at the influence of orientalism in the design process while heroes battling fantastical creatures ride horses at each corner.Raising each of the four corners of the structure are two male and two female bacchanalia figures brilliantly executed in gilded bronze, the front two flanking the circular face of the clock, this dial with raised Roman numerals over a hammered ground, the same motif of swirling foliage flowing centrally and in the spandrels of the face. Antique Gilded Bronze Ormolu Inlaid Westminster Chiming Grandfather Clock
This is a stunning example of French Bronze Ormolu, and cabinet marquetry. The original version of this clock was made in the 18th century for the King of France and is located in the Louvre in Paris. This is a 20th century version of this famous clock, presumably expertly crafted by hand in Italy. The other clocks on eBay have a black and red Boulle finish for the case, but this one is brown with light beige marquetry and is more consistent with the original found in the Louvre. I have had it for over ten years and have had the clock movement serviced. It keeps good time and chimes properly. The gilded bronze bears the name Barbedienne, as shown in the photos. I can send a video of the clock as it chimes if desired. It has beautiful Westminster chimes. It is key wound, and the time is set by moving the hands manually. It is in excellent condition overall. It measures about 85” in height. Buyer must arrange for shipping. It must be carefully moved and is fragile. Link below shows the original clock in the Louvre. Features a square agate frame with incuse corners and engine turned center, fancy scroll hands, cobalt enamel and gold laurel border. Stamped and engraved with serial number547 on the gold handle as seen in "European Watch & Clock Co. Inc France;" signed "Cartier" on clock face. Please look at pictures for condition. I don’t have any paperwork included with this clock. The key for winding the clock is not the original but is the right size which is a 1.65mm key that works perfectly to wind and set the time.
