Extremely Rare Astronomical Regulator- 1876 Centennial Gold Medal Winner
Fantastic and enormous astronomical regular built by the German firm Gustov Becker and exhibited at the 1876 Centennials Exhibition where it won a gold medal. The clock was bought by prominent Philidelphia jeweler Samuel Kind, the first U.S. jeweler to sell diamonds. Massive movement and a 20 inch dial.S.KIND & CO. was founded by Samuel Kind in Philadelphia in 1872. Having escaped war torn Europe as a Jewish immigrant just a decade earlier, he had a vision for a new life that began to take shape with the opening of his own store. He became the first purveyor of diamonds in America, cultivating a higher end jewelry buying experience that previously would have only been available in Europe. Through his keen eye and business acumen, he built a jewelry house that would span over a century and became part of the fabric of Philadelphia Samual no doubt saw this magnificent clock at the 1876 Centennial held in Philidelphia, one of approximately twelve Astronomical Regulators made for the Exhibition by the firm of Gustav Becker then the largest clock producer in GermanyA cleaver marketing tool by Gustov Becker was the two sunken subdials which would be very labor intensive to make however this allowed for two further sunken plates for the perspective buyers to put their bussiness name on thus not looking out of place !This was the largest of the clocks produced with a 20" dial and enormous movement and bracket. Exceptional Renaissance Revival carved walnut floor standing case with ebonized highlights has a pierced carved crest with filigree, seashell, turned and carved finials, raised burled panels below, long turned and tapered pendant side pieces with carved florets and incised spandrels in the upper door; the body door has a convex arch at the top under a carved drapery sash and the base has a 1 door compartment. Clock is in excellent condition, case is clean and original finish with no breaks or repairs, 2 top finials are replacements, dial has some wear to the silvering, movement is in running condition. Extremely rare and assumed to be a one of a kind piece, the carved case is of the highest grade and the movement is fine quality. Antique German Black Forest GATEHOUSE TRUMPETER CUCKOO Carved Clock WORKING
Here is an attractive and rare antique gatehouse or railroad style "trumpeter" cuckoo clock with foliate grape vine carvings, in as found running condition, as pictured. This 30 hour clock measures about 20” tall plus weights and pendulum, so it adds a commanding presence to the collection. The cast brass pinned plate movement has the G.H.S. 5 , Gordian Hettich & Sohne manufacturers mark, powered by a matched pair of pine cone weights on heavy brass chains, with original pendulum , and strikes hours and half hours on wire gong while the 2 note trumpeter appears from behind double doors and sounds his horn. The clock is running well as seen in video but it should be noted that the clock is missing the top crest and the carved bone hands have a broken hour hand, and has some age associated wear, with a few separations to carvings as pictured. Other than that, the clock has been sitting in storage for thirty five years and will greatly benefit from a thorough cleaning of the dust and soils accumulated over the years. The movement is bone dry & needs oil but is running without complaint. The bellows leathers are older replacements as well and don't sound bad, but please judge for yourself from the video.. the two reeded tin “trumpets” are loud enough to hear through the house. Has original French style winding key, attractive original carved wood trumpeter with nicely painted surfaces. A great novelty clock for the advanced collector. It would have been a little taller, but the tip of the top carved crest is missing. This Victorian Ithaca Parlor Calendar Clock is a No. 3 ½ and is constructed from Walnut with carved Ebony accents. It has a brass 8-day spring driven movement with hour strike on a silvered bell. There is a “count wheel strike mechanism” and the original silvered, etched glass pendulum. At the top is 4-inch clock dial with pierced spade silvered hands and at the bottom is a 7-inch, 31 day calendar dial with silvered date numbers, plus a revolving day and month window. EXCELLENT Description OFFERED FOR SALE IS LARGE LATE 19TH CENTURY BLACK FOREST CUCKOO CLOCK IN AMAZING CONDITION. CARVED IN WALNUT. THE CARVING PIECES ARE IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. I DON'T SEE ANY DAMAGE. PLEASE SEE CLOSE-UP PHOTOS BELOW . THEY ALSO SHOW THE CARVED FRONT AND CREST ON THE REVERSE SIDE. THE CLOCK HAS ORIGINAL BONE HANDS. THE HOUR HAND HAD A SPLIT BY THE ARBOR HOLE. IT HAS BEEN GLUED BACK AND ADDITIONALLY I REINFORCED IT WITH THIN BRASS WASHER ON ITS BACK GLUED TO THE BONE WITH THE STRONG EPOXY ADHESIVE. THE NUMERALS APPEAR TO BE ORIGINAL. THE PENDULUM IS ORIGINAL AS WELL. BOTH BIRDS HAVE ORIGINAL PAINT IN GREAT CONDITION. ALL MOVING PARTS ARE THRE AND WORK PROPERLY. THE BELLOWS LEATHER WERE WORN AND I REPLACED IT WITH GOATSKIN LEATHER IN ALL 3 TRAPEZOID BELLOWS. THE COVER PAPER ON THE BELLOWS IS ALSO REPLACED. ALL WOODEN PARTS OF THE BELLOWS ARE ORIGINAL. THE MECHANISM HAS BEEN DISASSEMBLED FOR CLEANING AND REPAIRED WHERE NEEDED. THERE ARE A FEW NEW BUSHINGS ON BOTH PLATES. THE MOVEMENT HAS NO STAMPS, BUT THIS ONE WAS MADE BY G.K (GEBRUNDER KUNER). THE QUAIL ACTIVATES ON QUARTERS OF HOURS. THERE ARE 4 QUAILS ON THE FULL HOUR FOLLOWED BY THE CUCKOO SOUND. THE VIDEO SHOWS THE MECHANISM ACTION ON 4 O'CLOCK. OF COURSE, THERE ARE THE GONGS CHIMES INVOLVED, WHICH ARE NOT PRESENT ON THE VIDEO BECAUSE THE BACK PANEL IS TAKEN OFF. THE GONGS CHIME WITH LOWER TONE FOR CUCKOO AND HIGHER TONE FOR A QUAIL. Gorgeous & Large Black Forest Cuckoo Quail Clock ** The Crow, Fox & Grapes
For your consideration is a beautiful antique Black Forest Cuckoo Quail clock in exceptional running condition and serviced within the last 10 years. The case is in wonderful condition, showing only what I consider to be 2-3 excellent professional repairs to the reverse side of the upper crest and 1 leaf tip on the middle left side has lost a tiny amount of surface cover, but the tip is still there. A teeny tiny brad is missing from the numeral IX and there is a slight vertical hairline directly behind the fox or below the #6. I can't imagine any 100+++ year old cuckoo clock that hasn't received some repair attention. The Fox & the Crow of Aesop's Fable is the stylistic theme of this clock. The fox and crow has either a glass or a plastic eye. The large dial measuring apprx. 6 7/8" features celluloid numerals and lovely carved bone hands produced by BoneHands out of Canada - who was definitely primo & one of the best! The cuckoo and quail birds bob and flap their wings - Click on Video below. This clock was imported from Germany by George Kuehl ca. 1910. The Kuehl Clock Company was founded by Theodore (b.1865) and George Kuehl, who were born in Germany and came to Chicago where they entered into the clock business. They prospered importing Black Forest cuckoo clocks and other types/styles of clocks including Gustav Becker, Kienzle and others. In 1891, they incorporated. They received Gold Medals at Chicago, Omaha, Paris and St. Louis Exhibitions. They were businessmen much like Florence Kroeber, who was also born in Germany and had connections with European/German clock manufacturers who supplied him with foreign made clocks which he sold through his store in NY. The thirty hour restored serviced movement is stamped GK - the bellows were recovered and rest upon the old pipes which produce a marvelous tone. DIMENSIONS: 26" height not including the pendulum or weights; width at the uppper crest is 18 1/2"; depth from the crow's wing to the wall is 11"; weight is just over 8 pounds NOT including the 3 weights that total apprx 8 pounds.
