Extremely Rare Astronomical Regulator- 1876 Centennial Gold Medal Winner
Fantastic and enormous astronomical regular built by the German firm Gustov Becker and exhibited at the 1876 Centennials Exhibition where it won a gold medal. The clock was bought by prominent Philidelphia jeweler Samuel Kind, the first U.S. jeweler to sell diamonds. Massive movement and a 20 inch dial.S.KIND & CO. was founded by Samuel Kind in Philadelphia in 1872. Having escaped war torn Europe as a Jewish immigrant just a decade earlier, he had a vision for a new life that began to take shape with the opening of his own store. He became the first purveyor of diamonds in America, cultivating a higher end jewelry buying experience that previously would have only been available in Europe. Through his keen eye and business acumen, he built a jewelry house that would span over a century and became part of the fabric of Philadelphia Samual no doubt saw this magnificent clock at the 1876 Centennial held in Philidelphia, one of approximately twelve Astronomical Regulators made for the Exhibition by the firm of Gustav Becker then the largest clock producer in GermanyA cleaver marketing tool by Gustov Becker was the two sunken subdials which would be very labor intensive to make however this allowed for two further sunken plates for the perspective buyers to put their bussiness name on thus not looking out of place !This was the largest of the clocks produced with a 20" dial and enormous movement and bracket. And it begs to wonder if this was built into the wall of S. Kind Jewelers or perhaps a enormous floor standing clock as our example from Fontains Auctionsfrom a description of a floor standing Gustav Becker Astronomical Regulator clock sold by Fontains AuctionsGustav Becker Astronomical Floor Regulator. Large 16 in. silvered bronze astronomical dial with sweep minutes, 5.5 in. inset sub hour dial above 5.5 in. sub seconds dial, quality blued hands and gilt bronze bezel. Quality brass 8 day weight driven time only movement is signed on the rear plate ?Gustav Becker, Freiburg i/S? (in Schlesien) with ?GB? and crown over anchor mark, front and rear plates are numbered 118702; movement has deadbeat escapement with jeweled pallets, cable barrel exposed on the rear plate, maintaining power, large brass covered weight with quality 4 spoke pulley, long steel pendulum rod with 2 glass jar mercurial compensating pendulum, silvered beat indicator and beat adjustment on the pendulum rod. Exceptional Renaissance Revival carved walnut floor standing case with ebonized highlights has a pierced carved crest with filigree, seashell, turned and carved finials, raised burled panels below, long turned and tapered pendant side pieces with carved florets and incised spandrels in the upper door; the body door has a convex arch at the top under a carved drapery sash and the base has a 1 door compartment. Clock is in excellent condition, case is clean and original finish with no breaks or repairs, 2 top finials are replacements, dial has some wear to the silvering, movement is in running condition. Extremely rare and assumed to be a one of a kind piece, the carved case is of the highest grade and the movement is fine quality. Using the dates for both serial number (1875-1880) and the maker's mark (1852-1877) we were able to determine that this clock was manufactured c.1875-1877, which indicates that it is likely that this clock was manufactured in 1875 for display in the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition held in Philadelphia any617 questions please834 feel free to ask9354 and i will gladly clocks from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition are exceedingly rare and coupled with one of the most famous Philadelphia jewelers make this clock in this condition truly a piece of American History (Condition: Refurbished)

Rare Art Nouveau Domed Architectural Bronze Clock by Edward Caldwell
A VERY FINE ART NOUVEAU DOMED ARCHITECTURAL TABLE CLOCKEdward F. Caldwell & Co., New York, circa early 20th century | an unsigned documented exampleItem # 307PQH13X An incredibly intricate Art Nouveau table clock from the renowned firm of Edward F. Caldwell, it is a brilliant architectural work that insinuates a domed cathedral of the Renaissance. This particular clock design is catalogued in the archival records of the Smithsonian Library and Archives (Large Portfolio 84, p. 5, # A025762). It features a cast bronze finial of opposing harpies rising from cornucopia that the Caldwell firm used in several of their designs (for example, as the central motif raising a pair of candelabra branches in # A25571, Smithsonian archives, see enclosed image) situated over a domed top with applied pierced bronze elements that are intricately chiseled and bright-engraved to create a complex endlessly swirling collection of fretwork surrounding ecclesiastical imagery of classical figures, putti and angels. The fretwork in the canted corners of the dome hint at the influence of orientalism in the design process while heroes battling fantastical creatures ride horses at each corner.Raising each of the four corners of the structure are two male and two female bacchanalia figures brilliantly executed in gilded bronze, the front two flanking the circular face of the clock, this dial with raised Roman numerals over a hammered ground, the same motif of swirling foliage flowing centrally and in the spandrels of the face. The clock is raised on a base of fish-scale cove moldings over four pomegranite bun feet. The clever entwining of motifs by the designer to create a new object that embodies the essence of Art Nouveau is evident throughout the form. The classical inspirations in the heavenly imagery of the dome juxtapose brilliantly the Naturalism in the lower body of the clock. It remains an incredibly elaborate and cherished example. Measurements: 21" H x 8" D x 11 1/4" W Condition Report:Surfaces throughout are heavily worn and tarnished. The bronze elements were finished by the Caldwell firm with a pigment based patina that has largely oxidized or worn away and much of it would have originally been more of a brown hue instead of the golden hue present where patina has been relieved. Composition of the silver metal unexamined. Includes a replaced winding key. Movement is complete and generally functional, but has not been professionally cleaned or serviced. Important Multi Complication Chronometer Carriage Clock w Perpetual Calendar ...
eBay I have the privilege of offering this rare clock today for a dear friend who is in his 90s and has been slowly liquidating his collection through me over the past several years. This clock was purchased by him directly from Sinclair Harding in the 1980s. Clock measures 13 1/2" high, 17" with handle up, 8 1/4" wide, 7" side. As far as we know it is one of the most complicated clocks Harding has made and the only one to have ever been offered for resale until now. The condition is excellent! The clock has been very well taken care of though it has never been serviced because he was afraid to have someone take it apart. (Please keep in mind that this clock needs to be serviced) The Movement is running and has kept time since I set it about 15 hours ago. Repeater works but is sluggish though it's getting better each time I push it, same with the striking. I don't believe the clock has been wound in a couple years. The entire face of the clock measuring 10" x 6.5" is solid sterling silver with Birmingham hallmarks for 1983. I am not an expert though I will describe what I know so far about the complications. It is a striking and hour repeater, phases and age of the moon, zodiac sign display wheel, 2 wind indicators, perpetual calendar, day, date and month and a seconds indicator on the top near the balance. The movement is a high grade pivoted detent chronometer. The 2-tone full dial plate is solid sterling silver. Not sure exactly what wood was used though it is very dark and exotic with gilt brass mounts and inlays. If you are a clock maker, you can probably say quite a bit more about this clock as I'm sure I'm missing something. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

Antique Gilded Bronze Ormolu Inlaid Westminster Chiming Grandfather Clock
This is a stunning example of French Bronze Ormolu, and cabinet marquetry. The original version of this clock was made in the 18th century for the King of France and is located in the Louvre in Paris. This is a 20th century version of this famous clock, presumably expertly crafted by hand in Italy. The other clocks on eBay have a black and red Boulle finish for the case, but this one is brown with light beige marquetry and is more consistent with the original found in the Louvre. I have had it for over ten years and have had the clock movement serviced. It keeps good time and chimes properly. The gilded bronze bears the name Barbedienne, as shown in the photos. I can send a video of the clock as it chimes if desired. It has beautiful Westminster chimes. It is key wound, and the time is set by moving the hands manually. It is in excellent condition overall. It measures about 85” in height. Buyer must arrange for shipping. It must be carefully moved and is fragile. Link below shows the original clock in the Louvre. This clock is almost identical. https: collections louvre fr en ark: 53355 cl010112671 (Condition: Pre-Owned)

19th Century Tiffany and Co Grandfather 9 tube clock Walter Durfee
This exquisite Tiffany & Co (Walter Durfee?) Grandfather 9 tube clock from the 19th century is a timeless piece of art that will add a touch of elegance to any room. Crafted with the finest mahogany or perhaps oak not entirely certain, this antique clock boasts a stunning brown color that exudes sophistication and class. Its tube shape and longcase design make it a unique and impressive addition to any clock collection. This clock has been meticulously crafted, showcasing the expertise of its maker and the quality of the materials used. With its classic design and timeless appeal, it is sure to be a conversation starter and a treasured addition to any home. There are Walter Durfee stamps on the tubes but I have found no other markings. But the photos of the mechanism are consistent with other Walter Durfee cloocks on the internet.Walter Durfee was an American clockmaker who is known for his contribution to the development of the modern grandfather clock. He was born on March 23, 1857, in Providence, Rhode Island 1. Durfee started his business by selling antiques and later began to purchase tall case clocks, which we now call grandfather clocks 1. He claimed to have bought and sold over 400 tall case clocks in his first 8 years in business 1. By mid-1880, Durfee decided to purchase new English bracket clocks and resell them in his antique shop in Providence, Rhode Island 1. It was from this venture that Walter Durfee met the fine quality clock manufacturer in London of Jennens and Sons 1. Jennens and Sons sold their clocks directly to the public but also through leading jewelry stores in London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, New York, and Boston 1. Durfee made an arrangement with JJ Elliott Ltd. to build a 3 weight clock with quarter-hour chime and hour strike on the “new” tubular chimes. In 1887, Walter Durfee received his first 9 tube grandfather clock. He sold it for $500 1. By 1890, Walter Durfee had created a true ‘fad’ for the high-end ‘hall clocks’. Everyone who had the money wanted one of his 9 tube chiming clocks This clock belonged to my wife's grandmother and I have included a handwritten note from her. She was Ruth Baker and she the sister of James A Baker, former secretary of state of the US. She inherited the clock from her father James Addison Baker Senior son of James Addison. Regardless it is a very impressive clock and I have enjoyed having it in our house as a center piece in our formal entry. It is beautifully hand carved in Mahogany and from my research appears to be one of a kind. The clock is nearly 100 inches tall or approximately 8 feet tall. THE CLOCK IS NOT WORKING. But is very similar to this other EBAY listing at $14,000:EBAY item # 296099406072 I had it looked at for repair of the cable but they were not able to complete the repair at our house so we are on a waiting list and have decided to sell as is. One of the photos attached shows an estimate for complete overhaul of the clock for $2,645 plus tax. The clock's case is in excellent condition but missing the finials. I added some more pictures of the movement. They indicated the clock is from the late 1800s. May be a Walter Durfee clock as noted in notes from my mother in law. If anyone has suggestions for confirming please let me know. The clock company representative it could sell for approximately $25K if fully refurbished. Clock is being SOLD AS IS. NO RETURNS. Will send more pictures to anyone seriously interested.Due to scams we have heard about where buyers claim they never received the correct item even when tracking is provided the buyer will need to arrange for the clock to be picked up at our house after we have ensured payment. Payment may be made at the time of pick up or by wire. We are willing to provide whatever reassurances the buyer requires as we are not scammers. Open to discussion in order to ensure both parties are protected. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at the history of Meissen china, its characteristics and its enduring appeal.Meissen china historyMeissen china was first produced in 1708, when Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, established the Royal Porcelain Factory in Meissen. The factory was created with the aim of producing porcelain that rivaled the finest Chinese porcelain, which was highly prized by European aristocrats at the time. The first Meissen porcelain pieces were blue and white, and featured designs inspired by Chinese and Japanese ceramics. The factory soon expanded its production to include polychrome pieces, which were painted with a range of colors and elaborate designs.Over the years, Meissen porcelain became increasingly popular among European aristocrats, who commissioned custom pieces for their dining tables and salons. The factory also produced figurines, which were highly collectible and often displayed in cabinets of curiosities. Meissen porcelain became synonymous with luxury and refinement, and its popularity continued to grow throughout the 18th and 19th centuries Meissen china china is characterized by its delicate, translucent body, which is created by firing a mixture of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz at high temperatures. The porcelain is then glazed and decorated with a range of techniques, including hand painting, transfer printing, and gilding. THE SONORA CHIME BELLS AND CHIME BLOCK ASSEMBLY WERE CAREFULLY DISASSEMBLED, CLEANED TO RESTORE THE RESONANT TIMBRE OF THE SONORA BELLS, AND EXAMINED FOR CONDITION TO INSURE THE ABSENCE OF HAIRLINE CRACKS, ETC. SUPERSIZE PHOTO 10 SHOWS THE BELL NEST WITH SOUND CAVITIES THAT CAN BE SEEN ON THE END OF THE WOODEN NEST. CAREFUL INSPECTION OF THE BELLS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: · ONE HAIRLINE CRACK CAN CAUSE A SONORA BELL TO LOSE ALL TONE AND TIMBRE, AND THE BEGINNING OF A HAIRLINE WILL ALMOST ALWAYS GROW TO A FULL HAIRLINE CRACK. · IN ADDITION, OTHER ISSUES WITH CRACKED, BROKEN, OR DETERIORATED WOODEN AND PRESSED FELT BELL SPACERS, USED TO SEPARATE THE BELLS, WILL IMPACT THE SOUND, YET CANNOT BE DETECTED BY CASUAL INSPECTION. · THE ONLY WAY TO ASSURE YOURSELF OF NOT BECOMING VICTIM TO PROBLEMS IS VIA FULL AUTHENTICATION OF THE COMPONENTS, WHICH IS MY PLEDGE TO YOU, THE BUYER. MOVEMENTS - #89X AND #104E BOTH THE 89X TIME AND HOUR STRIKE MOVEMENT, AND THE 104E SONORA CHIME MOVEMENTS WERE DISASSEMBLED, CLEANED WITH ULTRASONICS, INSPECTED IN DETAIL FOR CONDITION OF THE PIVOT BUSHINGS, GEAR TRAIN, AND ARBOR OR PIVOT ABNORMALITIES. OUT OF TOLERANCE BUSHINGS WERE REPLACED. EVERY OPERATIONAL ASPECT OF EACH MOVEMENT WAS ADDRESSED. THE MOVEMENTS WERE THEN REASSEMBLED AND PROPERLY LUBRICATED; BOTH MAINSPRINGS IN THE 89X WERE REPLACED WITH NEW HIGHEST GRADE 120 INCH MAINSPRINGS, NOT THE LOWER QUALITY 96 INCH KIND THAT ARE MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE. THE GREAT MAINSPRING IN THE 104E WAS REMOVED FROM ITS RETAINING BARREL, FULLY UNWOUND, PROPERLY CLEANED, INSPECTED, REWOUND, AND LUBRICATED WITH MAINSPRING INDUSTRUAL GRADE LUBRICANT. REPLACEMENT OF THE 120 INCH #104 MAINSPRING IS NEITHER RECOMMENDED NOR REQUIRED, AS LONG AS THE EXISTING MAINSPRING EXCEEDS SPECIFICATIONS, AS THIS ONE DOES. A NEW MANUFACTURE REPLACEMENT MAINSPRING TO FIT THE #104 HAS DIFFERENT STRENGTH AND TORQUE CHARACTERISTICS FROM THE ORIGINAL, AND MAY CREATE EXCESSIVE FORCES WITHIN THE MOVEMENT. IMPORTANT: THERE ARE SEVERAL SCARCE ITEMS OF THE #104E MOVEMENT. PAY SPECIAL NOTICE TO THESE THREE CRITICAL COMPONENTS: THE GREAT WHEEL GEAR, THE SECOND WHEEL GEAR WITH PINION, AND THE CHIME DRUM THAT SYNCHRONIZES AND DRIVES THE CHIME HAMMERS. IF ANY OF THESE COMPONENTS IS ABOUT TO FAIL, IT MAY NOT BE OBVIOUS. WHEN IT OCCURS, THE COST TO REPAIR WILL GIVE YOU A JOLT, BECAUSE THERE ARE NONE IN SUPPLY CHANNELS; ANOTHER MOVEMENT WILL BE REQUIRED. THAT IS WHY I ALWAYS MAKE SURE THESE CRITICAL COMPONENTS ARE IN TOP CONDITION ON MY RESTORED SETH SONORA CLOCKS. GOOD COUNSEL ON A CONTEMPLATED 8 BELL SONORA ACQUISITION WOULD BE: IF ONE ELECTS TO PURCHASE A SONORA OF UNKNOWN CONDITION – EVEN IF WORKING, BY ALL MEANS HOPE FOR THE BEST, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, BE PREPARED FOR PROBLEMS, SUBSEQUENT OPERATIONAL ISSUES AND EXTREME FRUSTRATION, AS WELL AS CONSIDERABLE EXPENSE. JUST LISTEN TO THE ATTACHED SOUND FILES FOR AN ACCURATE RENDERING OF THE CLARITY, RESONANCE, TONE DEPTH, TEMPO AND RICH DECAY OF EACH NOTE STRUCK WHEN THE SONORA 2000 CHIMES AND STRIKES THE HOUR. AFTER REASSAMBLY, APPROPRIATE ADJUSTMENTS FOR TIME, CHIME, HOUR STRIKE, SYNCHRONIZATION PENDULUM RATE AND BEAT ERROR ETC. WERE ACCOMPLISHED USING MECHANICAL AND ELECTRONIC MEANS. AN EXTENDED BENCH RUN TEST FOLLOWED. SEVERAL PHOTOS OF THE RESTORATION WORK ARE PART OF THE PORTFOLIO. ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION: · AS PART OF THE TESTS AND ADJUSTMENTS PROCEDURES ON THE #89X MOVEMENT, THE PENDULUM BEAT ERROR AND THE PENDULUM BEAT RATE ARE CHECKED AND SET - AN OBJECTIVE OF NEAR ZERO FOR BEAT ERROR IS DESIRED. THIS RESTORED 89X MOVEMENT ADJUSTED TO ZERO ERROR AND STABILIZED AT ZERO ERROR. THIS ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE IS HIGHLIGHTED IN PHOTO 11. · FOR PENDULUM BEAT RATE, THE 89X IS DESIGNED TO RUN AT 9,777 BEATS PER HOUR. THE RESTORED MOVEMENT EASILY HELD THE 9,777 BEAT RATE, MEANING THE TIME KEEPING WILL BE DEPENDABLE AND THE MOVEMENT WILL GIVE RELIABLE SERVICE. IN FACT, BOTH MOVEMENTS IN THE SONORA 2000 WERE RESTORED TO SUPERIOR CONDITIION. THE PENDULUM BEAT RATE ADJUSTMENT IS ALSO HIGHLIGHTED IN SUPERSIZE PHOTO 11. · THE PENDULUM SWING ARC OF THE RESTORED 89X FRONT MOVEMENT IS A FULL 3 1/2 INCHES, VERY ROBUST AND EXCEEDING ORIGINAL SPECIFICATIONS. A HEALTY PENDULUM SWING IS A POSITIVE INDICATOR OF A HEALTY MOVEMENT THAT HAS VERY LITTLE FRICTION AND LOTS OF ENERGY. BEWARE OF A #89X MOVEMENT WITH A PENDULUM AMPLITUDE OF 2 ½ INCHES OR LESS – A SIGN OF POOR MOVEMENT HEALTH. THE FULL RESTORATION OF A SETH THOMAS 8 BELL SERIES 2000 SONORA, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE, IS AN $1,500 VALUE IN AND OF ITSELF. IF YOU PURCHASE A SETH THOMAS 8 DEEP TONED BELL SONORA BELL CLOCK OF UNKNOWN OPERATIONAL RELIABILITY, A TRIP THE CLOCK DOCTOR IS LIKELY AND COSTLY. 8 Day Miniature English William Congreve Rolling Ball Clock with Marble Base
MINIATURE CONGREVE ROLLING BALL 8 DAY WORLD SMALLEST MINI CONGREVE ROLLING BALL CLOCK Here is a beautiful miniature Congreve rolling ball clock. This one is the SMALLEST you can find. Don't settle for anything in the middle, either go big or small. The first Congreve clock is invented by an English - Sir W. Congreve in 1808 and it's valued over $10,000 if you can find one. This one comes with a solid marble display base and protective dome. The glass dome has solid brass frames. The clock is made of heavy solid brass. The time shows on 3 separated porcelain dials - second, minute, and hour. The clock is driven by a double spring movement. It is really fun to watch this clock running. It has an 8 DAY movement. The bigger version from our competitor wouldn't even run 8 days. Our smallest 8 day Congreve clock will really amazes any guests in your home or shop. The small steel ball is rolling back and forth on the lower platform with a zigzag track. When the ball reaches the end of the table, it triggers the lever and the platform instantly tilts. Then the steel ball starts to roll back to the other end. It takes the steel ball 12 seconds to roll from one side to the other. The complete clock is 9" tall and 8-7/8" by 5-7/8" wide, the smallest you can find in the market. This clock comes with a adjustable display stand, so the clock will work perfectly even the surface is not. This is a very rare miniature Congreve rolling ball clock, which you just don't see anywhere else. Make sure you don't miss this profitable item for your collection or store display.
