Antique Edo Period Japanese Inro Watch / Clock & Sundial / Compass 1700s RARE
This listing is for an antique extremely rare Edo-period. Japanese gilt-brass mounted shitan wood watch (INRO-DOKEI). It is an exquisite piece, with a carved wooden case, and a beautifully carved metal movement; along with an extraordinary compass / sundial that has a case made of mokume-gane. It is likely from the late Edo Period, from what my research can find. I am unsure the exact year of its manufacture, but it appears to be potentially mid to late 1700s to early 1800s. A Japanese version of a portable compact watch in a casing resembling a pillbox, along with its compass. I have not been able to narrow down a maker yet, but it appears that the golden bead attached to the compass has both a potential signature and an exquisite lotus flower. These pieces were made before any sort of standardized time that we are used to, so the compass & sundial were integral for helping to keep your clock keep time while out & about. Japanese Inro clock-watches & their compass/ sundials of this caliber do not come often, especially not on ebay. Usually these are tied up in big-name auctions, with high buyer-premiums & extra fees; so grab this one now while you can!It appears to be in working condition, however I have not fully wound it up, due to my lack of experience with clocks of this kind. It appears to wind and run just fine though, there do not seem to be any broken mechanics, and the chain is complete and seemingly mint. I have not applied any oil or taken it apart in any way (other than sliding it out of the wooden case) so as not to cause damage. It is as-found, but in excellent condition. The curved rectangular case with its glass has an amazingly detailed hand carved design. The front has some filigree & leaved, the back displays two monks, or a monk & a god, playing some version of checkers under a blossoming tree. As you can see, the case has cracked in two during some point in its life. It seems that it could be delicately glued & restored to one whole unit, but I have not done so, as I do not know the correct glue to use. It may also be missing a metal bezel for the glass, but the glass is not loose. Restoration is up to buyers preferences. I am not sure if there were originally any top or bottom wooden panels held in place by the cord that are now lost. Comes with all the casing pieces shown. The metal front plate is engraved with leafy branches, the number panels, which can be slid depending on the time of year appear to be hand carved. The single chain fusee movement with verge escapement and plain balance with pierced and engraved bridgecock, with backplate with balance regulation scale and engraved with floral branches. It has a cord terminating with the engraved copper Damascus drum-shaped netsuke, opening to reveal a silver compass and sundial. It has its original gilt lacquer or potentially even gold, bead; an ojime. If you look in the carved copper body of the compass you can see the Mokume-gane (???) which it is made of. It is a Japanese metalworking procedure which produces a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns; the term is also used to refer to the resulting laminate itself. The term mokume-gane translates closely to "wood grain metal" or "wood eye metal" and describes the way metal takes on the appearance of natural wood grain.[1] Mokume-gane fuses several layers of differently coloured precious metals together to form a sandwich of alloys called a "billet." To the best I can tell, that is what this compass case is made of, though besides copper I am unsure the metals used. The loop to hold the thread & its embossed attachment piece, as well as the compass & sundial faces may be silver, but I am not sure. I have not tested any of the metal content at all, to not damage it. The dial has adjustable silvered engraved characters which represent the time as indicated by the hand. I believe the characters are two sequences of nine to four with the zodiac symbols used for the nine to represent noon and midnight. At the end of the Edo Period, pendulums and balance springs started to be used in speed regulators. Because it was difficult to adjust the time variations of both the four seasons and day and night mechanically, a hand-rotated dial of numbers that changed the time interval was conceived. The small rotating dial is engraved with text for 12 periods of time (the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac or numbered hours from 9 to 4). Japanese traditional clocks mainly in the Edo period that conformed to the temporal hour system developed uniquely in Japan, drawing attention from researchers in the world, and being highlighted in foreign books and studied. These clocks are highly sought after, many are on display in museums or locked away in private collections, but few are ever for sale. This clock comes from a massive estate collection, and was extremely well cared for in a temperature controlled room. Please check back this weekend & next week for multiple other antique & unique clocks I will be listing!Thank you for your consideration, reasonable offers are always considered. No exceptions. )Please feel free to read on below for a brief history of clocks in Japan, courtesy of the Japan Clock & Watch Association’s remarkably informative site: As Christianity spread in Japan, missionaries established vocational schools affiliated with churches in Kyushu and Kyoto. In addition to print technology, organs, and astronomical instruments, these schools taught production techniques for clocks. Japanese blacksmiths manufactured clocks under the guidance of these schools, resulting in the first mechanical clock production in Japan.According to the "Owari-shi" (a periodical from the Owari territory) compiled in 1832, Sukezaemon Tsuda from Nagoya City repaired a clock belonging to Ieyasu Tokugawa, and then used it as a model to create a new clock, which he offered to Ieyasu. For his service, Sukezaemon Tsuda was employed by Ieyasu in 1598. However, the shogunate government soon banned Christianity and adopted a policy of seclusion, which blocked the flow of new technology from Europe. Thus, it was possible to come in contact with cultural items from places such as China and Holland through Nagasaki only, and this also affected Japanese traditional clock production Clock makers gradually increased around the country, with many working as personal clock makers for the shogunate family and feudal lords for whom they were making gorgeous articles. Japanese traditional clock production sites included first and foremost Nagasaki, as well as Matsue, Kyoto, Osaka, Sakai, Ise, Nagoya, Wakasa, Edo, Sendai, Morioka, and Hirosaki. In Europe, mechanical clocks appeared as timekeeping switched from a variable to fixed method, but Japan at that time used a unique temporal hour system. As a result, clock production basically remained a copy of early European methods. Rather than work to increase the precision of clocks, Japanese clock makers focused on creativity and originality to conform to the country's unique temporal hour system. This resulted in the development of unique Japanese traditional clocks not seen elsewhere. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

Antique 19th C. French Art Nouveau Spelter Figural Mantel Clock Poseidon Moreau
WHAT YOU ARE BUYING/BIDDING ON#4104619th Century French Art Nouveau Period Mantel Clock by Moreau is a masterpiece of the style, rendered by one of France's most famous family of sculptors! Although Louis Auguste Moreau (1855-1919) and Hippolyte Francois Moreau (1832-1927) were notable sculptors in their own right, they collaborated on several works of which this is one example. Depicting the Roman God Neptune, called Poseidon by the Greeks, it displays the deity rising from the waves to quiet a storm, riding upon his giant clamshell chariot pulled by his faithful sea horses. Rendered in spelter, it has been given a lovely multi-hued bronze finish, and provides an amazing artistic touch to the clockwork below, with hand-painted dial produced by Chevassu, a clockmaker that operated out of Lorient, Brest & Nantes. Finished on all four sides, it was designed to rest on a mantel in front of a mirror, such that admirers could view it from all angles. Set upon a richly veined marble base. Circa 1895The Art Nouveau style flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic lines and was employed most often in architecture, sculpture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, posters, and illustrations CONDITIONGood Antique Condition; Gentle wear from use. Eli Terry & Sons Wooden Works Transitional Clock 30 Hour T&S Painted Eagle Splat
This is an antique "transitional" wood works clock made by Eli Terry & Sons. It has a standard 30 hour movement, and as far as I can tell, is ALL ORIGINAL. Eli Terry & Sons Wooden Works Transitional Clock 30 Hour T&S Painted Eagle Splat Eli Terry & Sons Wooden Works Transitional Clock 30 Hour T&S Painted Eagle Splat Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN TRANSITIONAL CLOCK ELI TERRY & SONS 30 HOUR T&S (ON THE HOUR ONLY) CIRCA 1823 - 1832 This is an antique "Transitional" wood works clock made by Eli Terry & Sons, with an excellent label intact. It has a 30 hour movement, striking on the hour only. The lower glass is a replacement, but appears to be correctly reverse painted, and not screen-printed. It retains it original "tin can" pulley covers--the few times they appear on eBay, they go for a couple of hundred dollars themselves. Rather than the usual splat featuring a cornucopia, this one has an eagle! The paint on that splat, as well as on the columns, appears to be original. The movement is an original Terry-type. The weights, hands, and pendulum bob are all original. It measures approximately 28 X 17 X 5 inches. Old Eli began a partnership with his sons Eli Jr. and Henry about 1823. Junior left the firm in 1828 and Henry in 1832, which ended the company. "Transitional clocks" such as this overlap in production with the Pillar and Scroll clocks designed and first produced by Eli Terry (and also made by several others) and the "Brass Looking Glass Clock," or as it is generally called today, the half-column and splat clock (the movement is often called a "groaner") designed by Jerome about 1828. Most say this type of clock represents a transition from the pillar and scroll style to the column and splat clocks, but I think it is more accurate to think of them of a transition between movement construction. These "Transitional" clocks could use the same movements produced for pillar and scroll clocks, as well as a cabinet with approximately the same dimensions as the P&S. Those made for Jerome's "groaner" movements required a longer case and some degree of re-tooling, at least for the escapement. The transitional clocks also have the same sort of reverse paintings as do the pillar and scroll clocks, but with a different top splat and claw feet, like those often used in Empire style furniture. You know, Eli Whitney gets the credit for mass production and interchangeable parts, receiving a government contract for 10,000 muskets in 1797. However, for the first year, he produced not a single musket. In 1801, he demonstrated the ease of assembling muskets from interchangeable parts for a government committee which included out-going President John Adams and incoming President Thomas Jefferson. However, it turned out the demonstration was a set-up, using predetermined parts. I have even read that Whitney never managed to perfect the technique, and actually subcontracted the muskets out to more traditional arms makers. He did, however, come up with the idea for it, an idea which Eli Terry applied to his wooden works clocks, and put a clock within the financial reach of people who could otherwise have never afforded one! The splat has a crack in it, and it looks like two of its original glue blocks were lost, and a single one at the center was added. There are various small pieces of veneer which have been replaced, and I see at least one area where the veneer has cracked (see photos). On the dial, there is a missing wood chip just to the right of the winding arbor. The movement of this clock was completely disassembled, cleaned, and restrung. There are old repairs to some of the teeth. It is currently working HOWEVER (1) I have read that when produced, the wooden movements were estimated to have a "life expectancy" of about 20 years. We are well beyond that now, by about 180 years, and it is amazing that so many of them are still running! However, you might say they are living on borrowed time, so I cannot guarantee a wood works clocks, especially after it goes through the post office or any other shipper. And (2) I sell all mechanical and electrical devices in AS-IS condition anyway, because parts can become brittle so that any disturbance affects it. Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful!
This is a superb antique 8 day wood works clock movement made by Eli Terry Jr. As far as I can tell, is mostly ORIGINAL. See photos and description for details. Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN WOODEN WORKS CLOCK ELI TERRY JR. 8 DAY T&S (ON THE HOUR ONLY) CIRCA 1831 - 1839 This is an antique wood works clock made by Eli Terry Jr. I believe he began making the 8 day movement about 1832, and ended no later than 1839, though records show that existing stocks were sold as late as about 1841. It was difficult for wood movements to compete with brass movements! The movement is of course unsigned (none were signed that I know of) and the paper is entirely missing. However, it is a match for another 8 day Eli Terry Jr. clock I have, and the movement is the Terry Type 5.111 as pictured in Figure 133, page 54, of Eight Day Wood Movement Shelf Clocks by Bryan Rogers and Snowden Taylor. This clock has a beautiful carved case, with paw feet. It appears to have been refinished a few years ago, and they did an excellent job on it! A few small pieces of veneer are missing here and there--see photos, as they are part of the description. The upper glass may be original, but the mirror in the lower is a replacement. It looks to me as though everything else is original: hands (though they have been painted black), bob, pulleys, and weights. The clock measures about 39 X 18.75 X 5 inches, and is very clean. The key is period, though have seen not others exactly like it. Instead of a crank, the winding stem is through the center shaft of a wood handle. It is probably not original to this clock. I completely disassembled the movement, restrung, and cleaned and preserved it. It is currently working and striking nicely. I have to share that these 8 day wooden movement clocks have a reputation for being quite finicky. Please note also that (1) the heavy weights used on 8 day clocks put a lot of strain on the great wheel, and while this one is presently without condition issues, they can break teeth off; (2) I have read that when produced, the wooden movements were estimated to have a "life expectancy" of about 20 years. We are well beyond that now, by 160 and more years, and it is amazing that so many of them are still running! However, you might say they are living on borrowed time, so I cannot guarantee such a movement, especially after it goes through the post office or any other shipper. And (3) I sell all mechanical and electrical devices in AS-IS condition anyway, because parts can become brittle so that any disturbance affects it. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a second box, at no additional charge. If the eBay shipping calculator seems high, remember this is a large clock. Even so, their calculator is sometimes off, so feel free to contact me for a binding shipping price. Any overage, including shipping discount (if any) will be refunded.
