Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN WOODEN WORKS CLOCK ELI TERRY JR. 8 DAY T&S (ON THE HOUR ONLY) CIRCA 1831 - 1839 This is an antique wood works clock made by Eli Terry Jr. I believe he began making the 8 day movement about 1832, and ended no later than 1839, though records show that existing stocks were sold as late as about 1841. It was difficult for wood movements to compete with brass movements! The movement is of course unsigned (none were signed that I know of) and the paper is entirely missing. However, it is a match for another 8 day Eli Terry Jr. clock I have, and the movement is the Terry Type 5.111 as pictured in Figure 133, page 54, of Eight Day Wood Movement Shelf Clocks by Bryan Rogers and Snowden Taylor. This clock has a beautiful carved case, with paw feet. It appears to have been refinished a few years ago, and they did an excellent job on it! A few small pieces of veneer are missing here and there--see photos, as they are part of the description. The upper glass may be original, but the mirror in the lower is a replacement. It looks to me as though everything else is original: hands (though they have been painted black), bob, pulleys, and weights. The clock measures about 39 X 18.75 X 5 inches, and is very clean. The key is period, though have seen not others exactly like it. Instead of a crank, the winding stem is through the center shaft of a wood handle. It is probably not original to this clock. I completely disassembled the movement, restrung, and cleaned and preserved it. It is currently working and striking nicely. I have to share that these 8 day wooden movement clocks have a reputation for being quite finicky. Please note also that (1) the heavy weights used on 8 day clocks put a lot of strain on the great wheel, and while this one is presently without condition issues, they can break teeth off; (2) I have read that when produced, the wooden movements were estimated to have a "life expectancy" of about 20 years. We are well beyond that now, by 160 and more years, and it is amazing that so many of them are still running! However, you might say they are living on borrowed time, so I cannot guarantee such a movement, especially after it goes through the post office or any other shipper. And (3) I sell all mechanical and electrical devices in AS-IS condition anyway, because parts can become brittle so that any disturbance affects it. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a second box, at no additional charge. If the eBay shipping calculator seems high, remember this is a large clock. Even so, their calculator is sometimes off, so feel free to contact me for a binding shipping price. Any overage, including shipping discount (if any) will be refunded. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly. NO RESERVE! MY PLEDGE TO YOU: no surprises! I will provide high-resolution scans; I will fully describe each item, obverse and reverse, positives and negatives, possibilities, likelihoods, what I suspect, and which is which; and I will provide as much historical context as I can. Now, I believe that the only people who never make mistakes are those who never say or do anything, so consequently, there will be times I am wrong. There, you are covered by my guarantee. MY GUARANTEE TO YOU: I guarantee each item to be genuine as described. After you receive your purchase, you will have a 30 day inspection period; and if you are dissatisfied for any reason, simply return the item (in its original condition) for an immediate refund of your purchase price.
