How to start an automatic watch? It’s very important to wind an automatic watch properly, prior to its use. The initial wind provided may only last a short while, making the watch appear defective once it stops ticking. To ensure your watch functions to the fullest of its capabilities, wait for it to stop and then wind the watch counter clockwise 15-20 times. Next, push the crown back, screwing it down to preserve the water resistance *Be mindful that excessively winding the watch may cause damages to the movement, so don’t overdo it. Unlike self-winding watches, the crown doesn't need to be wound on quartz models. If it still isn’t ticking, simply bring it by for a battery replacement. Why the watch is running slow?A watch can lose time for various reasons including, but not limited to a dying battery, which will cause the second-hand to begin jumping across several seconds at once instead of passing each individually, magnetization, causing tension between small parts within the movement and natural friction from the watch being worn. If the watch is a mechanical model (Automatic or Manual-wind) this can also be a sign that the watch needs to be overhauled. How to use a chronograph Operating a Chronograph requires using the pushers on the side of the case. The top pusher is used to start and stop the chronograph hand while the one at the bottom is used to reset it. Once the top pusher is pressed, the hand will run continuously, which you can track using the accompanying sub-dial. In order to reset the chronograph, it has to be stopped first. Otherwise the button will do nothing when pressed. How to set the date & time?Whether you have a screw or push-down crown, setting the date and time is simple. If its a screw-down, unscrew it by turning it downward, prior to following these steps. Pull out the crown to the first integer to operate the date alone, allowing the time to continue ticking. Pulling the crown out farther, you’re then allowed to adjust the time, which also shifts the date after each 24-hour cycle. Once you have your watch set, simply push the crown back in all the way and screw it fully closed to preserve its water resistance *Do not change the date when the watch is between 10PM-2AM because the movement can be damaged. How to ensure the watch is waterproof? For a watch, water is the worst enemy. To make sure you protect your watch properly check these factors before wearing it. First, see what kind of crown you have. If it is a push-down crown the watch is definitely not waterproof, but water resistant If the watch has a screw-down crown, then it may be waterproof, but you should check your model’s specifications to be sure. *Most importantly, no matter what kind of crown you have, you should check the watch for damages to the case, which will allow water to reach the movement regardless of whether the crown is closed or not. However, if you have any doubts, its best to have the watch water-tested, which will give you a conclusive result. English walnut longcase grandfather clock @ 1700 Original Charles Gretton signed
Queen Anne walnut longcase grandfather clock @ 1700 - 1710 by the eminent maker Charles Gretton in London. This is a fantastic rare clock that came out of an estate recently, where it had been in storage for many decades. The clock is presented in original untouched condition, but is in need of case restoration to look its best. There are some loose and detached, and some missing, molding pieces, the bonnet door lock is missing, and the trunk door hinges look to have been replaced at some point a long time ago; otherwise the case is quite good. The period walnut and walnut veneered case measures 85" tall x 20" wide (at the top) x 9" deep. It is very handsome and gives off a look of refined elegance with its great proportions, end-grain moldings, blind fretwork, and pendulum viewing lenticle in the trunk door. This is a clock from the Golden Age of early British clockmaking, and this maker was a rock star of the era, having apprenticed many of the best future makers who would go on to fame, and also having served as the Master and Treasurer of The Worshipful Company of Clockmakers for many years. A similar clock by this maker recently sold for over 15,000 pounds. The signed 12" square brass dial is excellent with very good original surfaces with patina. Great original hands, with the minute hand having had an old repair. The 5 pillar movement is original to the dial with no extra holes anywhere. Movement is complete and intact, and has countwheel strike. Movement is relatively clean, and runs and strikes well, but is sold without any warranty due to shipping. With original weights, weight pulleys, pendulum, and winding key. Please see the photos attached for the complete description, and ask any questions you may have. No reserve. Shipping in the Eastern USA can be arranged by blanket wrap antique mover service, which I would estimate to be $400.00, depending on exact location. No shipping West of the Mississippi River is offered. I will also deliver this case to a 100 mile radius of Chicago for $100.00. International shipping can be arranged; please message me for details. Rare Chelsea 8.5” Dial Pedestal Presentation Clock
eBay For sale is an 8.5” dial Chelsea pedestal presentation clock, with original surface dial and re-nickeled case. Original Chelsea sales ledger record indicates the Chelsea movement was sold by Chelsea Clock Company to American Steam Gauge & Valve Company on May 7th, 1913. I added more photos to the listing including the clock next to an iPhone for size perspective - the 8.5” dial diameter is a significant presence Technically therefore we can alternatively refer to this clock as an American Steam Gauge Clock with Chelsea movement. I have seen it listed both ways in the very few examples sold over the years. The Chelsea movement serial number 83324 can be seen in one of the included photos. The time only movement is the marine model, currently keeping accurate time well within Chelsea’s factory standard. A key is included to lock and unlock the hinged bezel. A winding key will also be included. This clock was a presentation piece for Frederick A. Ryer, who in 1911 became the purchasing agent for the Boston & Albany RR ( owned by New York Central RR). The engraved signature is one of the finest we’ve seen for a clock of this era.If the clock needs to be adjusted in the future there is a functioning regulator accessible in the front of the dial.$2400 or best offer, plus $100 for double box packing, shipping via USPS registered insured priority, and tracking, to continental U.S. only.
