Sold on eBay September 13th, 2023

Extremely Rare Astronomical Regulator- 1876 Centennial Gold Medal Winner

Fantastic and enormous astronomical regular built by the German firm Gustov Becker and exhibited at the 1876 Centennials Exhibition where it won a gold medal. The clock was bought by prominent Philidelphia jeweler Samuel Kind, the first U.S. jeweler to sell diamonds. Massive movement and a 20 inch dial.S.KIND & CO. was founded by Samuel Kind in Philadelphia in 1872. Having escaped war torn Europe as a Jewish immigrant just a decade earlier, he had a vision for a new life that began to take shape with the opening of his own store. He became the first purveyor of diamonds in America, cultivating a higher end jewelry buying experience that previously would have only been available in Europe. Through his keen eye and business acumen, he built a jewelry house that would span over a century and became part of the fabric of Philadelphia Samual no doubt saw this magnificent clock at the 1876 Centennial held in Philidelphia, one of approximately twelve Astronomical Regulators made for the Exhibition by the firm of Gustav Becker then the largest clock producer in GermanyA cleaver marketing tool by Gustov Becker was the two sunken subdials which would be very labor intensive to make however this allowed for two further sunken plates for the perspective buyers to put their bussiness name on thus not looking out of place !This was the largest of the clocks produced with a 20" dial and enormous movement and bracket. And it begs to wonder if this was built into the wall of S. Kind Jewelers or perhaps a enormous floor standing clock as our example from Fontains Auctionsfrom a description of a floor standing Gustav Becker Astronomical Regulator clock sold by Fontains AuctionsGustav Becker Astronomical Floor Regulator. Large 16 in. silvered bronze astronomical dial with sweep minutes, 5.5 in. inset sub hour dial above 5.5 in. sub seconds dial, quality blued hands and gilt bronze bezel. (in Schlesien) with ?GB? and crown over anchor mark, front and rear plates are numbered 118702; movement has deadbeat escapement with jeweled pallets, cable barrel exposed on the rear plate, maintaining power, large brass covered weight with quality 4 spoke pulley, long steel pendulum rod with 2 glass jar mercurial compensating pendulum, silvered beat indicator and beat adjustment on the pendulum rod. Exceptional Renaissance Revival carved walnut floor standing case with ebonized highlights has a pierced carved crest with filigree, seashell, turned and carved finials, raised burled panels below, long turned and tapered pendant side pieces with carved florets and incised spandrels in the upper door; the body door has a convex arch at the top under a carved drapery sash and the base has a 1 door compartment. Clock is in excellent condition, case is clean and original finish with no breaks or repairs, 2 top finials are replacements, dial has some wear to the silvering, movement is in running condition. Extremely rare and assumed to be a one of a kind piece, the carved case is of the highest grade and the movement is fine quality. Using the dates for both serial number (1875-1880) and the maker's mark (1852-1877) we were able to determine that this clock was manufactured c.1875-1877, which indicates that it is likely that this clock was manufactured in 1875 for display in the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition held in Philadelphia any617 questions please834 feel free to ask9354 and i will gladly clocks from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition are exceedingly rare and coupled with one of the most famous Philadelphia jewelers make this clock in this condition truly a piece of American History (Condition: Refurbished)

Purely American Made.Franklin "Frank" Herschede was born on July 30, 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio.In 1873, at the age of 16, he began working as an apprentice watch and clock repairman for Charles Cook.In 1877, he went into business for himself and moved to Vine and 5th Street in Cincinnati. He diversified into jewelry, watches, diamonds, etc., and in 1885, the store moved to larger quarters at the corner of Arcade and Vine.In 1885, noting the success of Walter H. Durfee, Herschede began importing movements and having cases made in a nearby cabinet shop on Front Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. Frank’s clock business expanded to the point that he purchased the cabinet shop in 1900.In 1901, Frank exhibited in the South Carolina and West Indian Exposition at Charleston, South Carolina, where he received a gold medal for his hall clocks. This was the first of several medals earned by the firm.Frank's son, Walter, graduated from high school in 1902, and began work in the cabinet shop. On December 29, 1902 the Herschede Hall Clock Company was incorporated. In that same year, Herschede began to produce his own tubes and install them in his clocks. In 1903 the Herschede Hall Clock Company factory moved from Front Street to 1011-1015 Plum Street. In 1904 the Herschede Hall Clock Company won several medals in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904: a gold medal for the best hall clock, a gold medal for the best hall clock cases, and a silver medal for tubular chimes. In 1909, the Herschede Hall Clock Company leased the building next door at 1007-1009 Plum Street to manufacture clock movements. The first movement passed final inspection on January 10, 1911. In 1913, a third melody, “Canterbury Chimes” was added to the Whittington and Westminster chimes. The tune was composed by Charles Eisen, "a gifted American pianist," especially for Herschede. (If you have a Herschede clock with this tune and are a musician, we'd appreciate having the tune so we can add it to our clock chime tunes page in this reference library... contact us and let's talk about how to make this happen... thanks in advance. We'd also like to have a digital recording of this tune.)At the Panama-Pacific International Exposition the firm won two additional major awards: grand prize was presented to the Herschede Hall Clock Company for chime hall clocks and mantel clocks, and a gold medal was awarded for the hall clock cabinets manufactured by the company.By the early 1920's the Herschede Hall Clock Company had opened branch sales offices in New York City, then in Chicago and San Francisco. Frank Herschede died on September 15, 1922, and Walter was named president in January of 1923.In 1925, Walter began to work with Mr. Warren to develop electric movement chime clocks. By April of 1926, the Revere Clock Company came into being.By 1927 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had added a pair of smaller lines of clocks, including a clock (about 6’ in height) and a “petite” clock (generally under 7’ in height). These were produced in the same styles as the larger hall clocks.By 1929 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had some 300 employees, but the Great Depression caused a significant reduction in demand for hall clocks (and just about everything else except jobs)!By 1933 the Herschede Hall Clock Company changed its primary focus on the lower end, introducing an inexpensive line of electric clocks called “Crown Clocks”.On February 4, 1934, Walter's son, Richard Herschede, began working fulltime with his father. The Herschede Hall Clock Company ceased clockmaking during WWII, focusing its manufacturing expertise on observational instruments and optical components for the military. Subsequent to the war, clockmaking resumed, but never regained its pre-war momentum. Eventually, the firm branched out into, of all things, the manufacture of parking meters! In 1952 the Herschede Hall Clock Company began using imported Junghans movements in its non-tubular bell clocks. Then, in 1959, in the midst of extreme economic difficulties, the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association lured the Herschede Hall Clock Company to move its plant to Starkville, Mississippi, with the new factory opening in May of 1960.In 1973, the Herschede Hall Clock Company merged with Howard Furniture and Briarwood Lamps to become Arnold Industries, Inc.On September 23, 1983, Herschede announced a plan to restructure the Herschede Hall Clock division from a manufacturer of the finished clocks to a supplier of quality tubular bell movements to the industry. The firm briefly resumed production of clocks in 1989, making approximately 20 clocks between that year and 1992 under the ownership of Howard W. Klein and Robert Eggering of St. Louis, MO. The firm was then sold to R&M Imports of Waynesville, OH, which manufacturers replacement parts for existing Herschede clocks CONDITIONGood antique condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, light scuffing / marking, working DIMENSIONS24 x 18.5" d x 86" hPAYMENTThe sooner you pay, the sooner you get your item. The Designers Consignment insists on receiving payment within 3 days of your winning bid or Purchase, otherwise we reserve the right to make a second chance offer to the second place bidder or re-list the item. Please let us know if you have any additional questions SHIPPING & HANDLINGWe are currently unable to ship to international US locations. ?MONUMENTAL FRENCH EMPIRE BRONZE ORMOLU CLOCK CIRCA 1820 Silk Excellent Cond

Monumental, impressive French Empire patinated and gilt bronze clock circa 1820. The bronze casting is of superb quality, and the gilding and the clock are in excellent condition. The clock is an impressive 25 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 7 inches deep. Figure itself is 18 inches tall! As with many clocks of the Empire period, this clock depicts a mythological story. Notice the figure, Clymenestra, is holding a dagger, and on top of the clock housing is the mask of a man and a crown. These details are symbolic of the story. In Greek legend, Clymenestra is a daughter of Leda and Tyndareus and wife of Agamemnon, commander of the Greek forces in the Trojan War. She took Aegisthus as her lover while Agamemnon was away at war. Upon his return, Clytemnestra and Aegisthus murdered Agamemnon. Clytemnestra was then killed by her son, Orestes, with the help of his sister Electra, in revenge their father’s murder. Please ask questions or request more photographs.Due to the size and weight of the clock, careful packing, shipping and insurance is $175.No international shipping. Vintage Lawson Electric Clock Model #304 Zephyr-pre war

Sold on eBay December 30th, 2023

Vintage Lawson Electric Clock Model #304 Zephyr-pre war

eBay You are purchasing a Lawson Electric Clock model 304 pre-war circa 1937-1940. The clock was first named the Mayfair but the Lawson catalog in 1938 named this model the "Zephyr". The pre-war style Zephyr was only made for a few years and is different thanthe later years same model clock. The early model had ball feet and the inverted "J" trim piece on the left front shows a more gentle curve. Please view the photos provided. Another unique detail of this particular clock is that the back plate is stamped 306 and not 304. Obviously miss marked but interesting and unique making this clock even more special. My guess it as the "Zephyr" model and the Belmont model 306 appeared together in the Lawson publication might explain the error. The back plate is correct but has 306 stamped instead of 304. This maybe be truly one of a kind in addition to this pre-war model rare as well. The metal clock has no dentsand is in very nice condition with a nice patina. There is no Lawson decal on the dial aperture plate which also is consistent with the pre-war period. The clock is untested and without cord. The clock is being sold from my personal collection. O-Scale Brass D&RGW K-36 Narrow-Gauge Locomotive

Sold on eBay January 26th, 2024

O-Scale Brass D&RGW K-36 Narrow-Gauge Locomotive

eBay Brass O-Scale Denver & Rio Grande Western K-36 No. 484 (2-8-2) Narrow-gauge Locomotive – This is an exceptional example of the model builder’s skills thirty years ago when things were really carefully made; from Samhongsa in Korea and imported by the legendary Precision Scale Co., Crown Series. A beautifully crafted scale model of the renowned D&RGW narrow gauge ‘Mikado’ type locomotive that continues to inspire railroad enthusiasts everywhere – restored in 1983 and still in use running excursion trips on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in portions of the Colorado/New Mexico area today. “K” designates Mikado-type and “36” denotes 36K pounds of tractive effort. This exacting reproduction model is in On3 gauge, #16219 and is in new condition throughout. No. 484 was originally built in 1925 by Baldwin Locomotive Works and weighted-in at 286k pounds, fully loaded, with tender capacity of 9.5 tons of coal and 5,000 gals of water and with a tractive power of 36,200 pounds. The most revenue came in hauling ore including coal, freight, some livestock and, of course, lumber. The railroad development in the Rockies was advanced through the vision of General William Jackson Palmer (who was a calvary officer in the Civil War and was advanced to Brigadier General by age 20) who not only created the D&RGW railroad, incorporated in October, 1870, but also the city of Colorado Springs. As an accomplished railroad construction engineer, he surveyed, designed the routes and supervised construction of his railroad. The three-foot gauge was selected due to costs, availability of materials, reduction in physical construction requirements and the formidable terrain being traversed through the mountains, across rivers and ravines. The narrow gauge allowed for smaller roadbeds, lighter track, tighter turning radiuses and faster construction – all very necessary to developing a much-needed revenue stream quickly. This reproduction is faithful to the original engine in every way and displays exquisite detailing throughout. A truly beautiful locomotive to see and unusual with the exterior mounted frame placing the drivers inside the frame with counter weights for the drivers and with connecting rods including main, primary and secondary rods, reversing gear on the outside of the steel frame plus automatic lubricator rods, air compressor, air lines and valves, compressed air tanks, steam lines and fittings – all presented in great detail and beautifully visible thanks to the superb painting, weathering and detailing of this unique model. Notice the fading of the paint, steam and water marks, grease, dirt and grime – all wonderfully painted on this exceptional model. The interior of the cab is fully detailed and painted showing all boiler backhead valves, lines, levers, seats with arm rests and apron on full display. All rivets, boiler sheeting and hold-down straps, sand and steam domes (with pressure release valves) and distribution lines, steam whistle and bell including pull cords and steam generator clearly exhibited along, with lights, marker boards, number boards, builder’s plate, toolboxes, handrails, steps and ladders – all finished beautifully that brings out every detail of this wonderful locomotive reproduction. The tender is equally well detailed including swing chains for each truck frame, re-railers air and steam lines, water connection from tender to injectors, coal bunker (filled with coal) and with inspection access doors from cab apron plus water bunker with water-fill pipe with lid and hold-downs, brakeman’s shanty and related electrical lines on full display. Offered along with this unique model are two hardcover books: “Rio Grande Narrow Gauge” and ‘Rio Grande Narrow Gauge both by author John B. Norwood; published by Heimburger House Publishing in 1983 and 1986; both first editions, complete with book jacket covers. I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing, one-of-a-kind model, which we purchased new, has been in our collection since 1992 and has been painted, weathered and detailed by an acclaimed model train artist high in demand – a new art-form really. His work is in such demand that the average wait time between his accepting the model for painting and completion is from 1-3 years. It was brought home, kept in it’s factory box until put on display about four years ago (never run) and is now being offered for sale so that we might expand our collection into other areas of brass locomotive types – mainly different railway equipment from narrow gauge locomotives. This exceptional reproduction deserves to be placed in a glass case and admired. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this rare, beautifully detailed and weathered D&RGW narrow gauge K-36 locomotive. This fine model will be shipped in its original box with original packing materials including the snow-plow attachment shipped originally with this beautiful model, double boxed, at buyer's expense – we recommend shipping via UPS or USPS Priority Mail insured. (Condition: Brand New)

1857 Gerhard Mandtler Restored Weight Driven 1 Handed Wall Clock Handmade Gears

Sold on eBay September 25th, 2023

1857 Gerhard Mandtler Restored Weight Driven 1 Handed Wall Clock Handmade Gears

This unique one-handed clock was made by Gerhard Mandtler son of Clockmaker Jacob Mandtler has been professionally restored. Gerhard was born in Prussia in 1821 and died in 1904. This Mandtler family was from the Mennonite colony located in Lindenau, Molotschna Colony in Prussia. These clocks are identified by the markings on a gear, identifying the maker and the year of manufacture. All gears on these clocks were hand made. The clock faces were not made by Gerhard Mandtler, they were hand painted in nearby village Lichtenau. These clocks were an important part of the Mennonite material culture. Mennonite parents often commissioned clocks as wedding gifts. The clock being offered is thought to be one of those wedding clocks. Due to political pressures the Mandtler family moved to Russia (now Ukraine) in 1855. Mandtler's son by the same name Gerhard Mandtler 1855-1930 was the last clockmaker of this family. Mandtler clocks ceased production around the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). There were several Mennonite families building clock during this period, Kroeger, Lepp, Hamm, Hildebrand and the Mandtler families. There are at this time more Kroeger clocks that have survived than any other. These clocks were very important to these people. Whenever they migrated the clock was almost sure to go with them. Looking at this clock one might assume it was from a large case grandfathers' clock or something similar. The museum for these Mennonite is located in Canada where several dozens of these clocks are on display, none have cabinets. What you see is the clock, the whole clock as it was used in the era, it never had a case. Movement is mounted on finished oak base for easy hanging. Researching Mennonite Clocks gives a whole new outlook on these amazing timepieces. Although these clocks were made with one hand and two hands the two-handed versions seemed to have had a better survival rate. Everything on this clock is in great condition. It has been serviced by a clock smith and received any care it required. Measurement on face is approx. 20 3/8" tall X 14" wide and weighs 7 lb. The pendulum is 39" long and 5 3/8 across and weighs 1 lb. 13 oz. The weights measure 11 1/2" and weighs slightly over 5 lb. and 6" and weighs 5 1/2 oz. This clock requires approx. 7 ft of vertical wall space. It is mounted on the oak board for hanging and movement protection purposes but can be hung easily without board. The clock smith is in the opinion this clock is authentic with all original pieces and parts. This is truly a great 166-year-old clock with an interesting history. This clock will be shipped in two separate boxes. Please check photos as they are a large part of description. Any questions, please contact me. Thanks for taking a look. (Condition: Refurbished)

The Hermle Story In 1922 our founder Mr. Franz Hermle founded the Franz Hermle Clock Company located in Gosheim in Baden Wuerttemberg, a small town in southern Germany's Black Forest region. Within ten years the company became known as one of the most efficient manufacturers of clock movements in the clock industry. Even though the first half of the 20th Century brought with it many difficulties to overcome, including the complete dismantling of the factory after the World War II, Franz Hermle and his sons' dedication allowed them to prosper while other companies struggled. Franz Hermle passed away in 1953 and left a modern and prosperous operation to his sons Gebhard, Alfred, Hans and Heinrich Hermle. With tremendous willpower and energy, they continued to build the company into the worldwide leader in manufacturing mechanical movements and clocks. In 1977, Hermle decided to establish another manufacturing facility, Hermle Black Forest Clock Company to serve the North American market out of Amherst, Virginia, USA. Hermle Headquarters in southern Germany is now in its third generation, still family owned and operated. Hermle employs over 200 people in 3 locations in both Germany and USA. In October 2010, Hermle Gosheim was rebranded as Hermle GmbH and as of January 2011, Hermle Black Forest Clocks rebranded itself as Hermle North America.
