Monumental, impressive French Empire patinated and gilt bronze clock circa 1820. The bronze casting is of superb quality, and the gilding and the clock are in excellent condition. The clock is an impressive 25 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 7 inches deep. Figure itself is 18 inches tall! As with many clocks of the Empire period, this clock depicts a mythological story. Notice the figure, Clymenestra, is holding a dagger,and on top of the clock housing is the mask of a man and a crown. These details are symbolic of the story. In Greek legend, Clymenestra is a daughter of Leda and Tyndareus and wife of Agamemnon, commander of the Greek forces in the Trojan War. She took Aegisthus as her lover while Agamemnon was away at war. Upon his return, Clytemnestra and Aegisthus murdered Agamemnon.
