Antique 1860s E. Howard & Co Boston Astronomical Regulator Gravity Clock #233 Antique 1860s E. Howard & Co Boston Astronomical Regulator Gravity Clock #233 Description This auction is for one of three really amazing antique clocks I have listed this week from the same massive local estate. The clock is an extremely rare Astronomical Regulator that was made by E. Howard & Company probably back in the 1860s or so. It has the number 233 on the dial. The massive clock measures about 60" tall, 18.5" wide and 11" deep and the back of the clock is a solid steel plate, so it weighs about 300 lbs. The clock has the original pendulum and single and is in excellent cosmetic condition. The only issue I see is that the piece that the pendulum sits on as a pivot point has a broken pendulum wire or strap that needs to be replaced (very common part and an easy fix). When it was together and wall mounted it worked good, so it should run fine once that strap is repaired. Looks to be all original. Note that this can't obviously be shipped easily, but I can arrange for shipping. It will be expensive - probably $1000-$2000 depending on location. Pick up is recommended and FREE - located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Guaranteed as described! Large Chelsea Base & Ball ship's bell clock with Special Grand 10" dial @ 1920s
Large dial Chelsea Base and Ball solid bronze ship's bell mantel clock @ early 1920s. This is an extremely rare clock that came out of an estate recently, where it was maintained and in regular use - this clock is in excellent original as found condition. The case has been polished and lacquered at some point in the past, and looks great, although it could have it's original antique bronze finish restored if desired. The case has an amazing look, a real work of art, and very impressive at 15 1/2" tall x 15 1/2" wide x 5" deep, and weighing in at 31 pounds. No damage or missing pieces to the case. The fancy Special Grand 10" diameter dial is excellent with its original finish and signature, being signed for the retailer J.E. Caldwell, Philadelphia. Great original fancy hands. The 8 day movement is marked Chelsea and serial number 137362, which matches the serial number stamped into the wooden base of the case, and dates between 1920 to 1924. It is complete and intact with good mainsprings, running strongly and accurately with it's original lever escapement, and striking ship's bells on the hours and half hours on its original gong, but is sold without any warranty. Bardon Clichy Master Wall Clock Konigsberg Germany Seal 1923 Pendulum Battery
HistoryVery little made it thru the WWII attacks on Konigsberg, Germany. First the shelling from the Royal Air Force inn August of 1944 and then by Soviet shelling in April of 1945. This one of a kind, Master Bardon clock, with a Konigsberg Seewarte seal somehow survived. Whether it was sheltered in the underground German bunkers or in the partial remains of the Konigsberg Observatory it did survive. The Observatory, a semi-circular two story research and observation facility with a brick vault (considered a regional architectural monument) is related to the clock via the Seewarte engraving on the clock seal."Seewarte" loosely translates as Naval Observatory or Oceanic Observatory or it could also be referring to the Atlantic Meteor voyage which mapped the ocean floor with the first sonic equipment and included the Konigsberg area in 1925-1927. The seal on this clock is also engraved Conigsberg, as it was first spelled for a period following the locations inception in 1843 as a mere Prussian settlement called Twangste.A piece of history from a location rich in history. Hitler had envisioned Konigsberg as a museum for everything the Germans had found in Russia Following the end of WWII and the Potsdam Agreement, Konigsberg, Germany became part of the Soviet Union (now Russia) and has remained so ever since. The Soviet Union renamed Konigsberg to Koliningrad. Today Konigsberg is of world interest as a Russian held area that is separated from the rest of Russia by two NATO countries. The situation with Ukraine makes this Russian held area of interest. Russia is most likely where this clock was purchased.Otto Pratje worked at the Konigsberg University with his chief study the geology of sea beds and he participated in the Meteor Atlantic expedition 1925-1926 eminating from Konigsberg. In 1937 he was appointed to establish and direct marine geological section of the Deutshe Seewarte at Hamburg. Both seafaring ventures produced official topographic and administrative maps of Germanys waters. Many dead underwater volcano's rising 1000 ft high in the ocean were identified for the first time with their 1st generation sonar equipment.Clock MechanicsThis Bardon Master clock appears to be one of a kind. Back is marble. Hangs at 52-1/2" long and 12" wide and 7 " deep.This is a battery run master clock with pendulum. Most likely from the Observatory in Koliningrad Konigsberg per the Seewarte seal on the front. Clocks by Bardon, Brillie and Vaucanson all embody similar principles. The coil is in the base. Extremely rare. Made in Clichy, France. Located at Etablissments bardon at the Societe Anonyme de Construction Electrique et Mechanique during the production years 1920-1925. Bardon hanging battery electromagnetic clock with oak case Bardon, Clichy. Charles Edouard GuillaumeThe Nobel Prize in Physics 1920 Precise measurement plays an important role in science. To provide a basis for precise measurements, the metric system and a German legal meter were instituted to define lengths. However, different materials expand differently when temperatures change, which limits the ability to make very precise measurements. In 1896 Charles-Edouard Guillaume succeeded in finding an alloy of nickel and steel that registered almost no change in length and volume as a result of temperature changes. The invar nickel-steel alloy had a significant effect on scientific instruments and incandescent light bulbs and was used in this clock.If you need this item shipped, that would be undertaken on your end. The clock keeps good time via a Patek Philippe mechanical pocket watch movement powered by light with a battery backup. The case is in excellent cosmetic condition. The clock dates to around 1970. Patek stopped making solar clocks long ago, the clocks now being produced are powered by quartz movements. Rare French Torsion clock suspended from matching stand. The silvered and dark blue patinated clock rotates side to side as it runs. There is an internal suspension spring and unique escapement. The balls to the sides adjust for fast slow.The whole was serviced and restored and runs as intended Usually we see these with figural stands, but this stand definitely seems to perfectly complement the clock. Important Multi Complication Chronometer Carriage Clock w Perpetual Calendar ...
eBay I have the privilege of offering this rare clock today for a dear friend who is in his 90s and has been slowly liquidating his collection through me over the past several years. This clock was purchased by him directly from Sinclair Harding in the 1980s. Clock measures 13 1/2" high, 17" with handle up, 8 1/4" wide, 7" side. As far as we know it is one of the most complicated clocks Harding has made and the only one to have ever been offered for resale until now. The condition is excellent! The clock has been very well taken care of though it has never been serviced because he was afraid to have someone take it apart. (Please keep in mind that this clock needs to be serviced) The Movement is running and has kept time since I set it about 15 hours ago. Repeater works but is sluggish though it's getting better each time I push it, same with the striking. I don't believe the clock has been wound in a couple years. The entire face of the clock measuring 10" x 6.5" is solid sterling silver with Birmingham hallmarks for 1983. I am not an expert though I will describe what I know so far about the complications. It is a striking and hour repeater, phases and age of the moon, zodiac sign display wheel, 2 wind indicators, perpetual calendar, day, date and month and a seconds indicator on the top near the balance. The movement is a high grade pivoted detent chronometer. The 2-tone full dial plate is solid sterling silver. Not sure exactly what wood was used though it is very dark and exotic with gilt brass mounts and inlays. If you are a clock maker, you can probably say quite a bit more about this clock as I'm sure I'm missing something. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
