A VERY FINE ART NOUVEAU DOMED ARCHITECTURAL TABLE CLOCKEdward F. Caldwell & Co., New York, circa early 20th century | an unsigned documented exampleItem # 307PQH13X An incredibly intricate Art Nouveau table clock from the renowned firm of Edward F. Caldwell, it is a brilliant architectural work that insinuates a domed cathedral of the Renaissance. This particular clock design is catalogued in the archival records of the Smithsonian Library and Archives (Large Portfolio 84, p. 5, # A025762). It features a cast bronze finial of opposing harpies rising from cornucopia that the Caldwell firm used in several of their designs (for example, as the central motif raising a pair of candelabra branches in # A25571, Smithsonian archives, see enclosed image) situated over a domed top with applied pierced bronze elements that are intricately chiseled and bright-engraved to create a complex endlessly swirling collection of fretwork surrounding ecclesiastical imagery of classical figures, putti and angels. The fretwork in the canted corners of the dome hint at the influence of orientalism in the design process while heroes battling fantastical creatures ride horses at each corner.Raising each of the four corners of the structure are two male and two female bacchanalia figures brilliantly executed in gilded bronze, the front two flanking the circular face of the clock, this dial with raised Roman numerals over a hammered ground, the same motif of swirling foliage flowing centrally and in the spandrels of the face. The clock is raised on a base of fish-scale cove moldings over four pomegranite bun feet. The clever entwining of motifs by the designer to create a new object that embodies the essence of Art Nouveau is evident throughout the form. The classical inspirations in the heavenly imagery of the dome juxtapose brilliantly the Naturalism in the lower body of the clock. It remains an incredibly elaborate and cherished example. Measurements: 21" H x 8" D x 11 1/4" W Condition Report:Surfaces throughout are heavily worn and tarnished. The bronze elements were finished by the Caldwell firm with a pigment based patina that has largely oxidized or worn away and much of it would have originally been more of a brown hue instead of the golden hue present where patina has been relieved. Composition of the silver metal unexamined. Includes a replaced winding key. Movement is complete and generally functional, but has not been professionally cleaned or serviced. We'll be sending out sale notices and special deals to our 'Favorites' customers. My own French carved clock. A spectacular mid-1800s French hand carved wood case to die for! The fruit, acanthus and overall decorative carving makes one think of Gueret Freres, one of the finest French firms for carved goods, or even of the all-time Master works of Grinling Gibbons, (1648-1721) Dutch-English carver whose work you've admired in Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, St. Paul's Cathedral and other interior in England. A true work of art, this one has been in my home for some time and it does run but we don't keep it running (husband hates the sounds). The carving is in fine order, as well. This one has been treasured long and well. I have never taken it apart to try to find a maker mark on the clockworks. It is not easily evident as the clock stands. Definitely quality, and it does run. This fine old clock is 26" in height and 17" wide, extends 6" from the wall. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. No breaks in the old wood case. No chips to speak of. Drapes of berries drape and an artichoke is so lifelike, one might wish to pluck it. Such elegant detail! One might consider it would need an adjustment upon arrival if one wanted it to run and be as accurate as these old ones ever can be. Both key and pendulum are intact, included, though I don't see them in our photographer's images (sorry). He's tried to capture the mechanism for your review, and I'm very sorry but am not an expert in clockworks, so I'm not even certain how to describe it to you. Much like those in the old Black Forest clocks. Indices are in Roman numeral, and all are present, lovely. Best of all, it's not just a beauty, it is a functioning clock, yes. The clockmaker who sometimes helps us if a clock is overwound upon arrival tells us that all clocks like this should be adjusted after shipment, so we'll simply pass that along. Return Policy:We always honor a 3-day return on our items, and guarantee them to be as described. Money back, less shipping costs, which are not refundable, so ask questions if necessary. We're easy to deal with.Shipping and Handling Policy:You are very important! Our fine inventory is very important. And your ranking of our performance is also very important! Customer satisfaction is paramount with us, so if you're thinking we have not deserved your highest marks, please contact us and allow us to be sure your concerns are completely satisfied before you rank us. We aim for 5-star transactions every day, and depend upon you to tell us directly if we have not yet met that standard for your transaction. Thank you! We most often use USPS for our shipping needs but will be happy to ship by another carrier if you prefer. We charge only actual postage & insurance, never a handling fee and never for packaging materials. Ebay is now requiring that our clients rank us on "shipping". The shipping price, speed and handling are actually under the sole control of the delivering postal agency, not Antiques & Uncommon Treasure so please remember that and leave us high DSR rankings. As always, please also feel free to contact us if you have any problems or concerns, we'll do what we can to ensure a happy and mutually enjoyable transaction Insurance has been eliminated as an option by ebay, forcing us sellers to either ship your items without insurance or assume that expense also. We always insure our items BUT, more importantly, pack them extremely well knowing that most are not replaceable. Again, damage in transit, while rare in our experience, is due to the postal agency handling and not caused by Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Please remember that when leaving DSR ratings. Thanks! Our shipping days are Tuesday and Friday, paid items will be shipped on the first shipping day after payment is received (except when special circumstances exist). We prefer to use USPS whenever possible, and require all packages to be insured. If you prefer another method of shipment, please mention it. eBay 1930's Art Deco Clock made by Herman Miller that was actually designed by *Gilbert Rohde*Gilbert Rohde (1894-1944) was one of the most notable figures in the early history of modern design in America. "His goal was to convert Americans to an appreciation and understanding of modernist design," as quoted by Phyllis Ross, the author of his biography published in March 2009 by the Yale University Press.Beginning in 1932, and continuing up to his death in 1944, the works of Gilbert Rohde was to reflect American Steamline Moderne design, as well as current trends in European art and design, including French moderne, the International Design style associated with the Bauhaus, and later, Surrealism. Much of his work was featured at several major fairs of the 1930s, including the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago in 1933 and 1934, and in the Decorative Arts Pavilion at San Francisco's 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. The clock does not work and will need to be repaired. eBay This cuckoo clock was purchased in Triberg (right in the heart of the black forest) in Germany in the fall of 2009. The clock is in mint condition, has been tested, and works perfectly. I could not find scratches or cracks in this clock. I provide a short video showing how it looks and the melody it has. The clock has three weights, the chains, and pendulum with adjustable knob to change the speed. The clock lasts about 8 days before one needs to pull the weights back up. The clock has four moving parts as it hits the hour mark: The cuckoo which pokes out of the top door that open and closes, a hiker (e.g, wanderer) that moves his left arm carrying an umbrella, a rotating Noria (water wheel used for raising water from a river so that it can flow by gravity via aqueduct to villages and cultivated land for irrigation), and a rotating carousel with four couples dancing together as it rotates. Every half hour the cuckoo sounds once and every hour the tune comes in and the cuckoo pokes out the number of hours. No pieces have fallen off, have not been broken, replaced nor glued back together. This clock comes with all the original pieces. We purchased this clock when I was on sabbatical leave in Erlangen with my family back in 2009. We traveled to Triberg (a small town right in the middle of the black forest) and purchased the clock there. The same company shown in the catalogue had it shipped to our home here in the US. The clock came with a pamphlet which will be included. It is not clear to me where exactly the clock was manufactured in Germany, but there is a small label in the back of the clock that suggests that some parts might have been made in Switzerland (which is nearby and borders the black forest). I am happy to provide instructions on how to set the clock up and get it running. The item will be shipped very well protected, and insured, especially because of the resonating wire on the back and because it it contains delicate pieces of wood that were all hand carved. I will pay for shipping but no international shipping please.I am also providing some dimensions to give you an idea of the size and weight of this clock:Height, 22 inches, length 15 inches, and width is .The chains with hooks and rings are approximately 6ft long and the weights are about 45.7 oz each (there are 3 weights, ~ 1.3 kg each). Please see pictures for details and feel free to ask questions. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
