Antique Wall Clock 17" Boston Chelsea Movement AS IS Brass Wood PARTS OR RESTORE

Sold on eBay May 19th, 2024

Antique Wall Clock 17" Boston Chelsea Movement AS IS Brass Wood PARTS OR RESTORE

You're bidding on an antique wall clock - 17 1/4" max diameter, 12 1/2" face diameter, about 4 1/2" depth - heavy wood case, solid brass face with bronze hands and numerals, & nickel plated face. Clock is marked on the front, "Smith, Patterson Company - Boston". Movement is marked as manufactured by Chelsea Clock Co., Boston, MA.NOTE - clock is NOT in working condition - it appears to be overwound, and may have other mechanical issues - I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a clock expert - although note that the works look very clean and bright in appearance - SOLD AS IS AS FOUND. Smith Patterson & Co. was basically the Tiffany & Co. of Boston in the late 19th-early 20th century - particularly known for high quality jewelry, watches & clocks. Chelsea Clock Company was founded in 1897 and still operates today - at the time, their reputation for quality was peerless, solidified by a contract with the U.S. Navy for ship clocks. Note some scratch/wear to the face, but still a great looking piece, with heavy wood housing, and nice decorative bronze hands and numbers. Winding key is present, but note the speed adjustment key is not. Screws are all still present but note, one screw is loose due to the hole being stripped. Some specks of white paint splatter from the clock apparently being painted around in the past. Definitely worth repair restoration The Chelsea movement is worth the price of admission itself for parts. Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking! On May-13-24 at 12:44:19 PDT, seller added the following - serial number on the movement is 72272 (Condition: Pre-Owned)
Mathurin Moreau 29” tall French museum clock 1800s Louis Boname Seloncourt

Sold on eBay October 27th, 2023

Mathurin Moreau 29” tall French museum clock 1800s Louis Boname Seloncourt

eBay For auction is a truly rare spectacular clock, nearly three feet tall by the famous artist, MATHURIN "Math" MOREAU. The clock movement is by the famous French clock maker: LOUIS BONAME (BESANÇON) SELONCOURT. You can see the stamp on the clock in one of the photographs. The dial protected by original glass door windows Moreau s signature appears in at least two places, once on each ladies' dresses (photos). I purchased this clock from a collector in Prague around 20 years ago and have owned it ever since. There is also a plate on the front “M. Moreau”. This clock is entitled "TRIOMPHE L'AMOUR". It is truly spectacular and stands over 29" tall and is very heavy. The detail work is exquisite. The back of this clock is more decorative and detailed than most clocks fronts. The glass and porcelain face are in excellent condition. The clock works and chimes a lovely bell sound. When I purchased the clock I was told it had been featured in a well-known palace in Germany. Unfortunately, I've since forgotten its name. There is a stamp on the back of the clock that reads as best as I can tell “Hors Concours” which I understand to be an expression from the late 19th century meaning “unrivaled ” This museum caliber clock will be the centerpiece of any home, whether your home is the Trump Tower or a more humble abode. The clock is in excellent condition for a clock that is well over a hundred years old and never restored. A true collectors piece. The Moreau family sculptor dynasty begins with Jean Baptiste Moreau, who was born in Dijon, France at the end of the 18th century. Jean Baptiste had three sons who followed in his footsteps, they were Auguste, Mathurin and Hyppolyte François The legacy continued with Auguste’s sons, Louis Auguste and Hyppolyte Francois. Members of the Moreau family often studied at the famous École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.Mathurin received many awards and specialized more in large statues - like you find in a town square, and his work followed the academic style. Many of Mathurin’s sculptures can be found around Paris, including L’Océanie, which is located in the Musée d’Orsay courtyard. Mathurin also won first place at the Paris World Fair in 1855 for his Fontaine de Tourny, which is now located in Quebec.Mathurin Moreau was born at Côte-d’Or on November the 18th, 1822, the son of Jean Baptiste Moreau, who was also famous sculptor in Paris. Mathurin Moreau studied at the École des Beaux Arts from 1841 where he was a pupil of Ramey and Dumont. He won awards at the Paris Salon. In 1885 his achievement was recognized by his becoming an Officer of the Legion d’Honneur. In 1897, Mathurian received the medal of honor for the Monument of Joigneaux. Its interesting to note that Auguste Rodin, also a sculptor in Paris at this time (born in 1840 and died in 1917) never received any such awards during his lifetime. In fact, it wasn’t until the 50th anniversary of Rodin’s death, in 1967, that he was finally awarded with the public tribute to Preiss. Mathurian died five years before Rodin. Mathurian Moreau sculpted many famous public statues in bronze around Paris and Europe, including L'Océanie at the Musee D’Orsay, La Chapelle Montmartre Parmentier in Cologne, the Sénat et jardin du Luxembourg, and a larger than life size figure of Marguerite d’Anjou. The two fountains of the Tourny place in Bordeaux (1857) were decorated with four Moreau sculptures. One of them is on display at Clemenceau place with Soulac-on-Sea. Mathurin’s son, Louis Auguste Moreau also became a successful sculptor. Other famous works of Mathurin Moreau are the Elegy, the Fairy with the flowers, the Ropemaking machine, Prima Vera and the Monument of Joigneaux, for which he received the medal of honor. Mathurin Moreau becomes mayor of the XIXème district of Paris. After its death a street in the City of Paris was named after him (Rue de Mathurin Moreau). He was made mayor of the XIXe arrondissement, Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honor. His other works include. · Cologne, limestone, 1865, façade de la gare du Nord · Nymphe fluviale, the Place du The tre Français Paris (1874) · L'Océanie, from the Exposition Universelle (1878),Musée d'Orsay courtyard · Zenobe Gramme, bronze, Musée des Arts et Métiers courtyard, Paris · Monument de Joigneaux, for which he received the medal of honor, Salon of 1897 · Tomb of Zenobe Gramme, Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, circa 1901 · Lord Strathcona Fountain, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, unveiled 1 July 1909 SOLD AS IS. YOU ARE ENTERING A BINDING CONTRACT TO PURCHASE BY PLACING A BID SO DO SO ONLY IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS BUYER. THANK YOU. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
Chelsea Clock Co. Centennial Commemorative Edition 1897-1997 WORKING! Ships Bell

Sold on eBay October 7th, 2023

Chelsea Clock Co. Centennial Commemorative Edition 1897-1997 WORKING! Ships Bell

Selling this for my parents - it sat on the mantle of their living room for about 10 years at which point they sent it into Chelsea for a 'tune up' and when it was returned they kept it in its original box having never put it back out for display so it's remained in the box in storage for over 15 years!Ships bell strike! 8 tones at 12:00 1 tone at 12:30 and an additional tone strike every half hour until it hits 8 again at 4:00, rinse and repeat!I have uploaded a video so you can see that the clock is in working order via both the movement of the escapement mechanism as well as the progression of of the minute hand over the course of the 90 second video. As expected you hear 8 tones at 12:00. I can also email you a video (eBay only allows 1 video upload per listing!) where you can see/hear the single tone at 12:30, also as expected. the outside diameter of the brass ring is 7 1/8" - the inside diameter (visible glass between the brass ring) is 5 3/8" and the inside ridge (silver part) of the clock face (with the 'door' open) is 5 5 8 The following two blurbs I have cut-and-pasted from actual auction houses selling other units from the same limited edition run so they are not my words and please consider accordingly :1. "Centennial" Commemorative Edition Clock by Chelsea, Boston, Massachusetts, the polished yellow brass 7 1/8 in. dia. case with hinged bezel and marked on the back, Chelsea Clock Co. Centennial Edition, 1897-1997, No. 0346, 6-in. dia. "Special Grand" silvered dial with pierced center to view the escapement, raised Arabic numerals and strike-silent, eight-day time and ship's bell strike movement with damascened plates and platform escapement all on a mahogany base with ball feet, ht. 9 1/4 in.2. Chelsea Centennial Limited Edition Desk Clock. 6 in. silvered dial has applied brass Arabic numbers on the chapter ring, fancy filigree pierced gilt brass center and fancy black pierced hands. Quality brass spring driven movement has ships bell strike on a coiled gong, in good working condition, signed Chelsea Clock Co. Centennial Edition 1897-1997, No. 0346. In a gilt brass case with round door bezel & mahogany base standing on spherical brass feet. 9.25 in. high x 8.5 in. wide x 3.5 in. deep. Weight: 11.75 lbs I was unable to find anywhere online how many of this limited edition clock were made but my assumption is that if you are looking at / interested in this item you are a general clock or Chelsea collector or enthusiast and know far more than we know about this particular piece! UPDATE : A kind gentleman who collects Chelsea clocks let me know that this piece is from a limited run of 3000.Key is included as is a fold over card indicating the chime or tuning. There is an X marked next to 'Island Melody' - this card means nothing to me so referring to the previous paragraph, I'm assuming that you know exactly how to read it. I'm learning that the card may not have anything to do with this piece but Dad had it by where the Chelsea was stored so he grabbed it. The chime is as described at the top of this description : Ship's Bell Strike Packaging - all of the original foam and inserts are there. As you can see the clock is well very well protected in the collector box and I will package that inside another box with plenty of air to keep the movement to a minimum whilst in transit.Felt - over time the glue that attaches the very thin layer of blue felt has entirely broken down so the felt is now simply 'loose laid' on top of the main foam section surrounding the clock. There may be a few small tears in the felt as well, but nothing that you'd notice when carefully laid out as I have it now (see photos). This is likely the case with the felt on all units from this limited run but rather than throw the felt away I have still included it.Shipping rates include full insurance and as provided are for the contiguous United States. Should you be in Hawaii or Alaska I'll have to recalculate. No returns - once it's gone it's gone - please use the photos to evaluate confirm the excellent condition and/or reach out to me with any questions in advance... I will do my best to answer them! Please consider this accordingly Thanks for the interest,RJ (Condition: Pre-Owned)

Rare Micrometer Strasser & Rohde, Glashütte iS (Clock makers)

Sold on eBay July 30th, 2024

Rare Micrometer Strasser & Rohde, Glashütte iS (Clock makers)

Rare Micrometer Strasser & Rohde, Glashütte iS with box (bottom only)It functions but may need serviced if your actually going to use it.HistoryThe company was founded in 1875 by the watchmaker Ludwig Strasser and the mechanic Gustav Rohde . The firm was located in Glashütte , long a center of clockmakers, in the Prussian province of Saxony . The watchmaker Curt Dietzschold was co-owner for a short time. Although Strasser became increasingly involved with the Deutsche Uhrmacherschule Glashütte , he remained a partner until 1914. Rohde was now elderly and in 1918 the company was taken over by the industrialist Friedrich Kreis, who leased it to the watchmaker Paul Weiss for 24,000 Goldmark . [1] Kreis also owned factories in Berlin and Switzerland, so Strasser & Rohde had access to parts and semi-finished products from third parties. [2] Weiss bought the company after Kreis' death in 1925 and led the company until his death in 1943, after which his widow Margarethe briefly took charge. After the Second World War, management fell to Arno Wustlich, son-in-law of Paul and Margarethe, who had been working for the company for some time. He led the company until bankruptcy in 1958 ProductsInitially the company produced various precision equipment such as micrometers , calculators and the then recent invention of the taximeter . Later, Strasser & Rohde focused entirely on watches and related equipment. The company tried to achieve the highest possible accuracy by making improvements to various parts of the mechanism. All Strasser & Rohde clocks could be traced back to one basic type, called the Glashütter Präzisions Pendeluhr (GPPU) , in which the coupling between pendulum and movement was mounted in reverse order. Several watchmakers have contributed to this development. The " free spring escapement " invented and patented by Strasser had a perfecting role in this. With this construction the pendulum was disconnected from the work in progress, allowing it to move more precisely. The company first presented this invention at the Saxon Thuringian Industrial Exhibition of 1897 and was awarded a gold medal at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris . [3] Based on this invention, the company manufactured pendulum clocks of the highest possible accuracy, mainly for scientific purposes. In the Netherlands, four clocks were ordered from Strasser & Rohde for scientific purposes between 1904 and 1911. One of these was used for the National Commission for Grade Measurement and Water Passing , the other three probably by the Leiden Observatory. Museum Boerhaave in Leiden has an astronomical pendulum clock by Strasser & Rohde, which for a long time served as the master clock for all clocks in the Leiden Observatory . [4] One of the other three stood in the old Geodesy building of TU Delft on Kanaalweg, [5] until it was converted into a student house. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
