Silas B. Terry Double Decker Clock, 8 Day T&S, Nice & Working, Ca. 1833-1839

Silas B. Terry Double Decker Clock, 8 Day T&S, Nice & Working, Ca. 1833-1839

A magnificent early Silas B. Terry double decker clock in good working order. Silas B. Terry Double Decker Clock, 8 Day T&S, Nice & Working, Ca. 1833-1839 Silas B. Terry Double Decker Clock, 8 Day T&S, Nice & Working, Ca. 1833-1839 Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters SILAS B. TERRY CLOCK DOUBLE DECKER GLASS OF RURAL SCENE 8 DAY T&S, WORKING CONDITION Ca. 1833 - 1839 THIS is a guaranteed genuine antique Silas B. Terry double decker 8 day time & strike clock, circa 1833 - 1839--and I think this one tends toward the earlier period of his production. Unlike his father and brothers, Silas tended more toward brass movements and seems to have been aiming toward a more affluent clientele. His early movements and label (like the one on this clock) are illustrated on pages 328-329 of Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock, 2nd. Revised Edition, by Kenneth Roberts and Snowden Taylor. On page 324, he suggests that these movements, with solid back plates, and labels such as this one has date between 1833 and 1839. Note the expansive view of the movement through the large center opening in the dial (seen in similar of his clocks), and also the way the upper pulleys are arranged. It is a weight clock, with an 8 day brass movement. Like most clocks of the period, it strikes only on the hour. Notice also the viewing windows on both sides, very much like are seen on nicer tall case clocks. And rather than a simple crutch, the verge is attached to the pendulum by a pin. Very little expense was spared in the manufacture of this clock! It was nicely refinished some years ago, and the lower glass was replaced with a somewhat ordinary rural cabin scene. But look at what was used to back that lithograph: A FRONT PAGE ARTICLE PROCLAIMING LINDBERGH'S SUCCESSFUL SOLO FLIGHT FROM NEW YORK TO PARIS! The clock measures approximately 35 X 17.5 X 5 inches. The movement was quite clean when I got it, so all I did was to lubricate appropriately. The weights were re-strung in the not-too-distant past with brass or bronze cable; while that would not have been my choice, I saw no reason to replace those. As far as I can tell, the hands, pendulum rod and bob, and face are original, and the weights are period. Both the case key and the winding crank are old, probably original. It is currently running and striking nicely. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box at no added expense to the buyer. I checked and was unable to find a similar clock sold on eBay for quite a few years. I did find a somewhat similar one at one of the major horological auction houses several years ago, where it went for almost $2000! I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "as-is" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. If there is damage, this must be pursued through an insurance claim. After that is settled, assuming notification is made within the inspection period, the clock can be returned. Should you be disappointed with the clock, or simply change your mind, you have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned for any reason for a refund of the purchase price--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Because of the clock's size and weight, it will be fairly expansive to ship. However, sometimes eBay's shipping calculator is inaccurate, so feel free to contact me for a binding shipping cost. The calculator does not include shipping discounts (if any), but I pass those on to the customer. NO RESERVE! MY PLEDGE TO YOU: no surprises! I will provide high-resolution scans; I will fully describe each item, obverse and reverse, positives and negatives, possibilities, likelihoods, what I suspect, and which is which; and I will provide as much historical context as I can. Now, I believe that the only people who never make mistakes are those who never say or do anything, so consequently, there will be times I am wrong. There, you are covered by my guarantee. MY GUARANTEE TO YOU: I guarantee each item to be genuine as described. After you receive your purchase, you will have a 30 day inspection period; and if you are dissatisfied, simply return the item (in its original condition) for an immediate refund of your purchase price. Furthermore, if in the inspection period, you decide to send the item for expertizing, I will extend the period until its return from the expert of your choice. If it returns with an opinion of not genuine, or of being significantly different from how I describe it, I will also reimburse you for the expertizing fee. And the ONLY exception to my guarantee is that I am not responsible for mishandling by the mail system, and any damages incurred therein. That is what insurance is for, and it is automatic on this item. Get images thatmake Supersized seem small.Showcase your items with Auctiva sListing Templates!THE simple solution for eBay sellers. Sold on eBay February 24th, 2025

Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful!

This is a superb antique 8 day wood works clock movement made by Eli Terry Jr. As far as I can tell, is mostly ORIGINAL. See photos and description for details. Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN WOODEN WORKS CLOCK ELI TERRY JR. 8 DAY T&S (ON THE HOUR ONLY) CIRCA 1831 - 1839 This is an antique wood works clock made by Eli Terry Jr. I believe he began making the 8 day movement about 1832, and ended no later than 1839, though records show that existing stocks were sold as late as about 1841. It was difficult for wood movements to compete with brass movements! The movement is of course unsigned (none were signed that I know of) and the paper is entirely missing. However, it is a match for another 8 day Eli Terry Jr. clock I have, and the movement is the Terry Type 5.111 as pictured in Figure 133, page 54, of Eight Day Wood Movement Shelf Clocks by Bryan Rogers and Snowden Taylor. This clock has a beautiful carved case, with paw feet. It appears to have been refinished a few years ago, and they did an excellent job on it! A few small pieces of veneer are missing here and there--see photos, as they are part of the description. The upper glass may be original, but the mirror in the lower is a replacement. It looks to me as though everything else is original: hands (though they have been painted black), bob, pulleys, and weights. The clock measures about 39 X 18.75 X 5 inches, and is very clean. The key is period, though have seen not others exactly like it. Instead of a crank, the winding stem is through the center shaft of a wood handle. It is probably not original to this clock. I completely disassembled the movement, restrung, and cleaned and preserved it. It is currently working and striking nicely. I have to share that these 8 day wooden movement clocks have a reputation for being quite finicky. Please note also that (1) the heavy weights used on 8 day clocks put a lot of strain on the great wheel, and while this one is presently without condition issues, they can break teeth off; (2) I have read that when produced, the wooden movements were estimated to have a "life expectancy" of about 20 years. We are well beyond that now, by 160 and more years, and it is amazing that so many of them are still running! However, you might say they are living on borrowed time, so I cannot guarantee such a movement, especially after it goes through the post office or any other shipper. And (3) I sell all mechanical and electrical devices in AS-IS condition anyway, because parts can become brittle so that any disturbance affects it. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a second box, at no additional charge. If the eBay shipping calculator seems high, remember this is a large clock. Even so, their calculator is sometimes off, so feel free to contact me for a binding shipping price. Any overage, including shipping discount (if any) will be refunded. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly. NO RESERVE! MY PLEDGE TO YOU: no surprises! I will provide high-resolution scans; I will fully describe each item, obverse and reverse, positives and negatives, possibilities, likelihoods, what I suspect, and which is which; and I will provide as much historical context as I can.
