19th Century Tiffany and Co Grandfather 9 tube clock Walter Durfee

Sold on eBay February 20th, 2024

19th Century Tiffany and Co Grandfather 9 tube clock Walter Durfee

This exquisite Tiffany & Co (Walter Durfee?) Grandfather 9 tube clock from the 19th century is a timeless piece of art that will add a touch of elegance to any room. Crafted with the finest mahogany or perhaps oak not entirely certain, this antique clock boasts a stunning brown color that exudes sophistication and class. Its tube shape and longcase design make it a unique and impressive addition to any clock collection. This clock has been meticulously crafted, showcasing the expertise of its maker and the quality of the materials used. With its classic design and timeless appeal, it is sure to be a conversation starter and a treasured addition to any home. There are Walter Durfee stamps on the tubes but I have found no other markings. But the photos of the mechanism are consistent with other Walter Durfee cloocks on the internet.Walter Durfee was an American clockmaker who is known for his contribution to the development of the modern grandfather clock. He was born on March 23, 1857, in Providence, Rhode Island 1. Durfee started his business by selling antiques and later began to purchase tall case clocks, which we now call grandfather clocks 1. He claimed to have bought and sold over 400 tall case clocks in his first 8 years in business 1. By mid-1880, Durfee decided to purchase new English bracket clocks and resell them in his antique shop in Providence, Rhode Island 1. It was from this venture that Walter Durfee met the fine quality clock manufacturer in London of Jennens and Sons 1. Jennens and Sons sold their clocks directly to the public but also through leading jewelry stores in London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, New York, and Boston 1. Durfee made an arrangement with JJ Elliott Ltd. to build a 3 weight clock with quarter-hour chime and hour strike on the “new” tubular chimes. In 1887, Walter Durfee received his first 9 tube grandfather clock. He sold it for $500 1. By 1890, Walter Durfee had created a true ‘fad’ for the high-end ‘hall clocks’. Everyone who had the money wanted one of his 9 tube chiming clocks This clock belonged to my wife's grandmother and I have included a handwritten note from her. She was Ruth Baker and she the sister of James A Baker, former secretary of state of the US. She inherited the clock from her father James Addison Baker Senior son of James Addison. Regardless it is a very impressive clock and I have enjoyed having it in our house as a center piece in our formal entry. It is beautifully hand carved in Mahogany and from my research appears to be one of a kind. The clock is nearly 100 inches tall or approximately 8 feet tall. THE CLOCK IS NOT WORKING. But is very similar to this other EBAY listing at $14,000:EBAY item # 296099406072 I had it looked at for repair of the cable but they were not able to complete the repair at our house so we are on a waiting list and have decided to sell as is. One of the photos attached shows an estimate for complete overhaul of the clock for $2,645 plus tax. The clock's case is in excellent condition but missing the finials. I added some more pictures of the movement. They indicated the clock is from the late 1800s. May be a Walter Durfee clock as noted in notes from my mother in law. If anyone has suggestions for confirming please let me know. The clock company representative it could sell for approximately $25K if fully refurbished. Clock is being SOLD AS IS. NO RETURNS. Will send more pictures to anyone seriously interested.Due to scams we have heard about where buyers claim they never received the correct item even when tracking is provided the buyer will need to arrange for the clock to be picked up at our house after we have ensured payment. Payment may be made at the time of pick up or by wire. We are willing to provide whatever reassurances the buyer requires as we are not scammers. Open to discussion in order to ensure both parties are protected. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

VINTAGE Howard Miller Arthur Umanoff MCM Grandfather Wall Clock W/Original Parts

Sold on eBay December 13th, 2023

VINTAGE Howard Miller Arthur Umanoff MCM Grandfather Wall Clock W/Original Parts

eBay What a gorgeous relic, and mid century modern is such a wonderful nostalgic style! There are only a few of these that I’ve seen in this condition. This one is in GREAT condition for the age. Has a couple small little marks and stains that could come out with a careful cleaning. This clock has all the original things to my knowledge. The original turnkey is there, and while the original suspension spring is still present, it had to be replaced because it broke long ago. The new one is the only thing that’s been replaced and it comes with the original as well. It has the original instructions, original pendulum, and the model number instact on the back. The case is a beautiful and simple oak, with a nice rectangular face and Roman numerals to tell the time. The clock works great, but could probably use a tune up at a clock shop to make sure it’s accurate. Has a beautiful and deep tick, the kind that will put you to sleep if you sit around it too long. You just have to wind it every 8 days! 34.5 in Width: 10.5 in Depth: 4.5 in Weight is 14 lb 4 oz. Will ship securely with a LOT of protective wrapping. Check out my shop for more vintage and cool stuff. Thanks! (Condition: Pre-Owned)

So, this Clock is available again for your buying advantage!Wow folks, here is a clock that we have not had to offer you for about 3 years now. For you clock collectors out there, here is a unique chance to get this model mid-century style clock for your collection. Howard Miller is and was known for their fabulous traditional and modern style grandfather clocks. This type of clock is referred to as a Mid-Century Modern. This is one of about 150 George Nelson designed clocks (mantel, wall, and grandfather) that Howard Miller had them make between 1947 and the end of the 1980s.This is the Model ??? Grandmother Clock. The clock has a beautiful wood probably walnut top that has fours sides and comes to a point. The sides of the case are made of smoked lucite panels. The base of the clock is the same wood as utilized on the top of the case. The case has some minor finish losses and surface scratching of the lucite panels. No cracks, dents or missing pieces to the case. The four adjusting legs are still in lace on the base of the case. The case has an open front for a nice contemporary look. The clock face is 9-3/8" across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description. The clock is too delicate and heavy for shipping safely via normal shipping options, so this clock is for local pick-up in Georgetown, DE. We can arrange for a packing shipping quote from a couple of carriers we regularly use. A lot of our customers also use UShip or a company like Antiques Express that do blanket shipping (I would pack out the inside of the clock in this situation, rest would be your carrier's responsibility) You need to understand that a blanket ship company can take 6-8 weeks to deliver an item. We will also offer to deliver the clock within 250 miles of Georgetown, DE one way. Price would be $.70 per mile for the round trip delivery plus any tolls/parking fees. That offer is for delivery only. If you want us to set the clock up (setting pendulums, faux weights, and leveling of clock in position you choose), that would be an additional $50. Should we agree to deliver this clock to you, and you decide to return the item, for whatever reason, such delivery charges are not refundable. Same additional charges would apply to a pick-up.As can be expected when dealing with a vintage clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it. Make sure that this clock meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. The item can be returned, there is a 15% restocking fee to do so. So, please carefully review all the attached pictures, ask all the questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it. Don't be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions! Please check out our other Timeless Tokens store listings as we are regularly adding new items. It wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that clocks evolved at an exceedingly swift rate, resulting in greater accuracy, more refined designs, and more frequent appearances in people’s homes. In both the United States and internationally astrological, tall-case, year-long runners, and skeleton clocks are in demand. “E. Howard and Seth Thomas are two of the bigger names that collectors are seeking out right now, Buyers of antique and vintage clocks today range from collectors who own hundreds of them, to the retail buyers who’ve been looking for the right grandfather clock to display in their living room. “Collectors pay close attention to rarity and condition, For early American clocks, they look for original glass tablets, original painted dials, and the original finish or actual wood case. With European clocks, specialists tend to be a bit more forgiving in terms of condition because it has more to do with the movements and gears. A replaced gear on a European clock, for example, may be more acceptable than a replaced tablet or dial on an American clock. Important 19th-Century Styles By the 19th century, recognizable innovations and styles began to emerge across Europe. In France, for example, clocks were fitted with extravagant cases mirroring trends in interior design, and by 1850 carriage clocks decorated with Limoges enamel, porcelain, and gilt metal were becoming exceedingly popular. Meanwhile, Germany specialized in making affordable brass and wooden clocks, most notably cuckoo clocks, which were made in the Black Forest region and exported across Europe. Skeleton clocks were the characteristic choice for British households, churches, and government buildings, as were clocks decorated with Gothic-inspired cases and architectural elements, exemplified most famously by Big Ben. Antique Vienna and English clocks from 1780 to 1920, the most famous and collectible makers produced clocks between 1700 and 1890. “This was the great era of clockmaking, and a time that sparked lots of novelties and inventions in clock movements and cases. Important 20th-Century Styles Twentieth century clocks typically drew inspiration from earlier styles, although the U.S. made, electrically powered “Eureka” clock is especially indicative of the years leading up to the First World War. The heyday of clock manufacturing took place in the first half of the century, and by the 1950s clocks became increasingly minimalistic in design, reflecting developments in modern art and architecture. Today, clocks are available at a wide range of prices, styles, and sizes, evidencing the long-lived history of these highly valued, sophisticated timekeeping devices High end valuable clocks tend to be handmade, rare, or limited edition pieces made or decorated with precious materials, such as gold, diamonds, rubies, mother of pearl enamel, porcelain, and high-quality wood. Clocks made by important designers, like Abraham Louis Breguet, or reputable manufacturing companies, like Ansonia, are also highly prized as premium collectible pieces. Antique Wall Clocks Wall clocks, which were first made during the 16th and 17th centuries, are among the earliest styles of clocks designed for display within the home. They not only tell time but also serve as sculptural works of art adorning the room. One of the most fashionable styles of antique wall clocks is the Ansonia hanging clock, made by Ansonia Clock Company, which originated in Ansonia, Connecticut in 1851 and moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1878. Ansonia clocks are usually made of a combination of brass and high-quality wood and decorated with ornately executed designs, such as mini-friezes, classicizing figures, and floral and geometric designs inspired by ancient Greek architecture. Bidermeier clocks, made in Germany and Austria between 1815 and 1848, are another popular type of antique wall clock. Produced primarily for a burgeoning middle class knowledgable of the value of furniture and interior design, Bidermeier clocks exhibit simple yet elegant features. One of the main identifying characteristics of this refined style is the juxtaposition between the sleek, straight lines of the clock’s torso and the delicate curves of the baroque and gothic motifs decorating the upper and lower portions of the case. Vintage Mantel Clocks Mantel clocks were first made in France and were typically placed above the fireplace alongside vases or sculptural figurines. Also known as chamber clocks, early mantel clocks oftentimes had handles, enhancing their practical function as portable timekeeping devices that could be easily picked up and moved from mantel to bookshelf to tabletop; however, later versions departed from this design. Vintage mantel clocks, especially those made during the Art Deco period and mid-century, are valued today for their simple yet elegant geometric designs. Antique Cuckoo Clocks Cuckoo clocks were first made during the 18th century in the Black Forest region of southwestern Germany, although they also have a long history in Switzerland and Austria. These clocks are of course famous for the automaton cuckoo bird that moves in tandem with musical notes each time the clock strikes the hour. Cuckoo clocks are prized for their lively, interactive quality and handmade, intricately carved designs. Antique versions are typically decorated with forest and hunting scenes and include animal motifs, most notably hounds, deer, rabbits, pheasants, and other woodland creatures. Antique Grandfather Clocks Grandfather clocks are named after the 1876 song “My Grandfather’s Clock” (“My grandfather’s clock was too large for the shelf, So it stood ninety years on the floor”). Also called long-case, tall-case clocks, and floor clocks, grandfather clocks are freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clocks, often outfitted with elaborate ornamentation, especially on the hood of the case. Invented by the English clockmaker William Clement in 1670, the grandfather clock quickly became popular across Europe and assumed a variety of forms. American grandfather clocks, such as those made in 19th-century New England, are usually eight feet tall and exhibit a wide, sturdy base, whereas French clocks often have slim bodies and flat or slightly rounded hoods. Many antique grandfather clocks include highly detailed metal dials illustrating the passage of the sun and phases of the moon. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
