Antique Edo Period Japanese Inro Watch / Clock & Sundial / Compass 1700s RARE

Sold on eBay September 30th, 2023

Antique Edo Period Japanese Inro Watch / Clock & Sundial / Compass 1700s RARE

This listing is for an antique extremely rare Edo-period. Japanese gilt-brass mounted shitan wood watch (INRO-DOKEI). It is an exquisite piece, with a carved wooden case, and a beautifully carved metal movement; along with an extraordinary compass / sundial that has a case made of mokume-gane. It is likely from the late Edo Period, from what my research can find. I am unsure the exact year of its manufacture, but it appears to be potentially mid to late 1700s to early 1800s. A Japanese version of a portable compact watch in a casing resembling a pillbox, along with its compass. I have not been able to narrow down a maker yet, but it appears that the golden bead attached to the compass has both a potential signature and an exquisite lotus flower. These pieces were made before any sort of standardized time that we are used to, so the compass & sundial were integral for helping to keep your clock keep time while out & about. Japanese Inro clock-watches & their compass/ sundials of this caliber do not come often, especially not on ebay. Usually these are tied up in big-name auctions, with high buyer-premiums & extra fees; so grab this one now while you can!It appears to be in working condition, however I have not fully wound it up, due to my lack of experience with clocks of this kind. It appears to wind and run just fine though, there do not seem to be any broken mechanics, and the chain is complete and seemingly mint. I have not applied any oil or taken it apart in any way (other than sliding it out of the wooden case) so as not to cause damage. It is as-found, but in excellent condition. The curved rectangular case with its glass has an amazingly detailed hand carved design. The front has some filigree & leaved, the back displays two monks, or a monk & a god, playing some version of checkers under a blossoming tree. As you can see, the case has cracked in two during some point in its life. It seems that it could be delicately glued & restored to one whole unit, but I have not done so, as I do not know the correct glue to use. It may also be missing a metal bezel for the glass, but the glass is not loose. Restoration is up to buyers preferences. I am not sure if there were originally any top or bottom wooden panels held in place by the cord that are now lost. Comes with all the casing pieces shown. The metal front plate is engraved with leafy branches, the number panels, which can be slid depending on the time of year appear to be hand carved. The single chain fusee movement with verge escapement and plain balance with pierced and engraved bridgecock, with backplate with balance regulation scale and engraved with floral branches. It has a cord terminating with the engraved copper Damascus drum-shaped netsuke, opening to reveal a silver compass and sundial. It has its original gilt lacquer or potentially even gold, bead; an ojime. If you look in the carved copper body of the compass you can see the Mokume-gane (???) which it is made of. It is a Japanese metalworking procedure which produces a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns; the term is also used to refer to the resulting laminate itself. The term mokume-gane translates closely to "wood grain metal" or "wood eye metal" and describes the way metal takes on the appearance of natural wood grain.[1] Mokume-gane fuses several layers of differently coloured precious metals together to form a sandwich of alloys called a "billet." To the best I can tell, that is what this compass case is made of, though besides copper I am unsure the metals used. The loop to hold the thread & its embossed attachment piece, as well as the compass & sundial faces may be silver, but I am not sure. I have not tested any of the metal content at all, to not damage it. The dial has adjustable silvered engraved characters which represent the time as indicated by the hand. I believe the characters are two sequences of nine to four with the zodiac symbols used for the nine to represent noon and midnight. At the end of the Edo Period, pendulums and balance springs started to be used in speed regulators. Because it was difficult to adjust the time variations of both the four seasons and day and night mechanically, a hand-rotated dial of numbers that changed the time interval was conceived. The small rotating dial is engraved with text for 12 periods of time (the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac or numbered hours from 9 to 4). Japanese traditional clocks mainly in the Edo period that conformed to the temporal hour system developed uniquely in Japan, drawing attention from researchers in the world, and being highlighted in foreign books and studied. These clocks are highly sought after, many are on display in museums or locked away in private collections, but few are ever for sale. This clock comes from a massive estate collection, and was extremely well cared for in a temperature controlled room. Please check back this weekend & next week for multiple other antique & unique clocks I will be listing!Thank you for your consideration, reasonable offers are always considered. No exceptions. )Please feel free to read on below for a brief history of clocks in Japan, courtesy of the Japan Clock & Watch Association’s remarkably informative site: As Christianity spread in Japan, missionaries established vocational schools affiliated with churches in Kyushu and Kyoto. In addition to print technology, organs, and astronomical instruments, these schools taught production techniques for clocks. Japanese blacksmiths manufactured clocks under the guidance of these schools, resulting in the first mechanical clock production in Japan.According to the "Owari-shi" (a periodical from the Owari territory) compiled in 1832, Sukezaemon Tsuda from Nagoya City repaired a clock belonging to Ieyasu Tokugawa, and then used it as a model to create a new clock, which he offered to Ieyasu. For his service, Sukezaemon Tsuda was employed by Ieyasu in 1598. However, the shogunate government soon banned Christianity and adopted a policy of seclusion, which blocked the flow of new technology from Europe. Thus, it was possible to come in contact with cultural items from places such as China and Holland through Nagasaki only, and this also affected Japanese traditional clock production Clock makers gradually increased around the country, with many working as personal clock makers for the shogunate family and feudal lords for whom they were making gorgeous articles. Japanese traditional clock production sites included first and foremost Nagasaki, as well as Matsue, Kyoto, Osaka, Sakai, Ise, Nagoya, Wakasa, Edo, Sendai, Morioka, and Hirosaki. In Europe, mechanical clocks appeared as timekeeping switched from a variable to fixed method, but Japan at that time used a unique temporal hour system. As a result, clock production basically remained a copy of early European methods. Rather than work to increase the precision of clocks, Japanese clock makers focused on creativity and originality to conform to the country's unique temporal hour system. This resulted in the development of unique Japanese traditional clocks not seen elsewhere. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

8 Day Miniature English William Congreve Rolling Ball Clock with Marble Base

MINIATURE CONGREVE ROLLING BALL 8 DAY WORLD SMALLEST MINI CONGREVE ROLLING BALL CLOCK Here is a beautiful miniature Congreve rolling ball clock. This one is the SMALLEST you can find. Don't settle for anything in the middle, either go big or small. The first Congreve clock is invented by an English - Sir W. Congreve in 1808 and it's valued over $10,000 if you can find one. This one comes with a solid marble display base and protective dome. The glass dome has solid brass frames. The clock is made of heavy solid brass. The time shows on 3 separated porcelain dials - second, minute, and hour. The clock is driven by a double spring movement. It is really fun to watch this clock running. It has an 8 DAY movement. The bigger version from our competitor wouldn't even run 8 days. Our smallest 8 day Congreve clock will really amazes any guests in your home or shop. The small steel ball is rolling back and forth on the lower platform with a zigzag track. When the ball reaches the end of the table, it triggers the lever and the platform instantly tilts. Then the steel ball starts to roll back to the other end. It takes the steel ball 12 seconds to roll from one side to the other. The complete clock is 9" tall and 8-7/8" by 5-7/8" wide, the smallest you can find in the market. This clock comes with a adjustable display stand, so the clock will work perfectly even the surface is not. The Hermle Story In 1922 our founder Mr. Franz Hermle founded the Franz Hermle Clock Company located in Gosheim in Baden Wuerttemberg, a small town in southern Germany's Black Forest region. Within ten years the company became known as one of the most efficient manufacturers of clock movements in the clock industry. Even though the first half of the 20th Century brought with it many difficulties to overcome, including the complete dismantling of the factory after the World War II, Franz Hermle and his sons' dedication allowed them to prosper while other companies struggled. Franz Hermle passed away in 1953 and left a modern and prosperous operation to his sons Gebhard, Alfred, Hans and Heinrich Hermle. With tremendous willpower and energy, they continued to build the company into the worldwide leader in manufacturing mechanical movements and clocks. In 1977, Hermle decided to establish another manufacturing facility, Hermle Black Forest Clock Company to serve the North American market out of Amherst, Virginia, USA. Hermle Headquarters in southern Germany is now in its third generation, still family owned and operated. Hermle employs over 200 people in 3 locations in both Germany and USA. In October 2010, Hermle Gosheim was rebranded as Hermle GmbH and as of January 2011, Hermle Black Forest Clocks rebranded itself as Hermle North America. PLEASE WAIT FOR INVOICE HISTORY: In 1854, Waterbury, Connecticut based brass manufacturer Benedict & Burnham created Waterbury Clock Company to manufacture clocks using brass wheels and gears. Waterbury Clock Company was legally incorporated on March 27, 1857, as an independent business with $60,000 in capital. The American clock industry, with scores of companies located in Connecticut's Naugatuck Valley, was producing millions of clocks, earning the region the nickname, "Switzerland of America". The Waterbury Clock Company was one of the largest producers for both domestic sales and export, primarily to Europe. Today its successor, Timex Group USA, Inc. is the only remaining watch company in the region. Originally, the company produced clocks as less expensive alternatives to the high-end European counterparts of the time. In 1887 the company began experimenting with its product line, leading to the creation of the large Jumbo pocket watch, invented by Archibald Bannatyne and named after the famous P. T. Barnum elephant. The Jumbo was put on the market in New York City on a trial basis, catching the attention of Robert H. Ingersoll, a salesman and eventual marketing pioneer. During the turn of the century, Waterbury Clock Company produced millions of pocket watches for the newly created partnership of Robert and his brother Charles, Robert H. Ingersoll & Bro., under their own brand name. In 1896, Ingersoll introduced the Ingersoll Yankee, a dollar pocket watch supplied by Waterbury Clock Company. These watches gained such great popularity that they became known as "the watch that made the dollar famous."In 1877, a new prototype was introduced to Benedict and Burnham for an inexpensive pocket watch made of 58 parts, mostly made of punched sheet brass. They immediately set aside an unused portion of their machine shop and began producing the Long Wind at a rate of 200 per day by 1878. The department quickly outgrew its space in the plant, so with a capital of $400,000 Waterbury Clock's sister company Waterbury Watch Company was incorporated by Benedict & Burnham in 1880 to manufacture and sell inexpensive watches and other timepieces. Waterbury Watch started out very successfully in its early days, employing hundreds of women for their "slender fingers" and "delicate manipulation," having become the largest volume producer of watches in the world by 1888.Due to poor sales techniques, where jobbers and salesmen gave away much of the Waterbury Watch products as loss leaders with little regard to the company's future, thereby cheapening the products' perceived value, Waterbury Watch quickly fell into bankruptcy. In a last attempt to salvage the company, Waterbury Watch began to produce higher-end watch models which only created more demand on a workforce unable to keep up with the complexity of the new watches using several hundred parts. The company was finally reorganized as the New England Watch Company in 1898 as its London sales office was placed into liquidation. The company continued to focus on high-priced watch models and eventually fell into receivership, discontinuing business in July 1912. Robert H. Ingersoll & Bro. bought the Waterbury plant and began manufacturing Ingersoll Watches there in 1914. With the American entry into World War I there were new demands for timepiece design. Artillery gunners needed an easy way to calculate and read time while still being able to work the guns. The Waterbury Clock Company met this need by modifying the small Ingersoll ladies' Midget pocket watch to become military-issue wristwatches — lugs were added for a canvas strap, the crown was repositioned to 3 o'clock, hands and numbers were made luminescent for nighttime readability, thus making one of the first wrist watches. In 1922, Waterbury Clock Company purchased the Robert H. Ingersoll & Bro. company for $1,500,000, which had gone bankrupt the previous year due to the post-war recession, thereby inheriting all of Ingersoll's and Waterbury Watch's assets and facilities. Unable to deliver on Ingersoll's guarantee of quality in Europe due to the Great Depression, Waterbury Clock sold the London-based Ingersoll, Ltd. to its Board of Directors in 1930, making it a wholly British-owned enterprise. The "powerful Ingersoll brand name" was continued in the United States by Waterbury Clock into the 1950s. No longer part of Waterbury Clock Company, Ingersoll Ltd. continued to produce the Ingersoll watch brand independently for the European and other international markets. Following the Great Depression and a period of hardship for the company, Waterbury Clock Company regained its identity in the consumer market. In 1930, a license agreement was reached with Walt Disney, resulting in the production of the famous Mickey Mouse watches and clocks under the Ingersoll brand name. The new Mickey Mouse timepieces were introduced to the public at the Chicago World's Fair in June 1933 and quickly became the company's first million-dollar line, saving it from financial disaster. In 1940, Thomas Olsen (owner and operator of Fred. Olsen Shipping Co.) and Joakim Lehmkuhl fled Norway with their families because of the Nazi invasion Eventually they came to the United States seeking investments to assist in the war effort. In 1941, Olsen and Lehmkuhl purchased controlling interest in Waterbury Clock Company, with Thomas Olsen becoming Chairman. Though the company had fallen on hard times during the Great Depression it still had the manufacturing capability to make large numbers of timing devices. Mr. Lehmkuhl, who had studied business and engineering at Harvard and MIT, was appointed President by Olsen and, under his direction, the company became the largest producer of fuse timers for precision defense products in the United States. A new concrete plant was built in nearby Middlebury, Connecticut in 88 days in 1942 for the high-volume production of precision timers. In August 1943, the Army-Navy "E" Award for excellence was awarded by the United States Under-Secretary of War to Waterbury Clock Company for the "Anglo-American fuse". As a result of this success shareholders in the following December voted to rename the company to United States Time Corporation.

Precision Scale On3 Mich/Cal 16T Shay Locomotive

Brass O-Scale Michigan – California Lumber Company No. 2 Two-truck Shay Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills years ago when things were really carefully made and where attention to details counted. An example of legendary Japanese quality, this beautifully crafted scale model of one of the most interesting and famous of all Shay locomotives ever made – it is the oldest surviving Tee-boiler Shay now existing. From Micro Cast/Mizuno of Japan for the highly prized Precision Scale Company, serial number 01026. A beautifully crafted in great condition, scale model of possibly the last surviving Tee boiler Shay locomotive. Many of these geared locomotives were made by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, after obtaining the original design and permission from Ephraim Shay himself. Shay came up with this idea after noticing that the wooden track used in the forested areas of Michigan was not damaged by the rail cars carrying logs even though they were much heavier than the locomotives pulling the cars. He surmised that smaller wheels (36” diameter) was the difference and his design employed the same size wheel as the flat cars used. This geared design was also introduced in The Transportation Exhibits in the World Columbian Exposition of 1893.This model is based upon the first engineering redesign from the original patents and were first introduced in 1883-1884 – this older design lasted 23 years until dropped from Lima’s catalogue when the whole line of Shay’s was recast. The Tee-boiler was used on smaller engines ranging from 10 to 20 tons. This engine was originally sold to a Michigan company but was subsequently sold and shipped to California for use on the “Mich-Cal” logging operations active there Michigan California Lumber of Company of Camino, California, formed in 1918 from the failed El Dorado Lumber which morphed into the C. D. Danaher Lumber Company in 1911 and then Mich-Cal, used this locomotive on the Georgetown Divide operations and ended up as a switcher at their mill operations during the 1950’s. It is still there behind their offices today. This compact Shay was made in 1884, construction number 122, for three-foot gauge track and converted to oil from wood in about 1905. This number 2 was used for switching needs after the larger No. 7 Shay arrived in 1904. In logging practice, these locomotives were sometimes, depending upon grades, run uphill facing forward with empty flat cars behind and then, once loaded, was backed down the hill which guaranteed adequate water over the crown sheet. There were grades of 7% on this line. The three-foot gauge, two-truck, two-cylinder design provided a very compact power-plant with 26” drivers, 13,000 lbs. tractive power at 23 tons weight plus a smaller turning radius allowing for sharper curves in trackage and with reasonable fuel/water capacity for reasonable operating periods in the field. These small Shays were also used for switching and in industrial areas to move rail cars around – sometimes converted to standard gauge for industrial uses. This fine reproduction exhibits all of the careful detailing expected including accurate steel frame details with wooden bumpers, cylinder details including steam supply and exhaust distribution lines and fittings, connecting crank fittings, steam air compressor with related valves and lines, the cab with fully detailed boiler backhead controls, fuel oil bunker with fill lid and vent line in place with the water tank beneath is complete including sand box at the rear with fill caps in place – love the off-set headlight. The original paperwork from Iron Horse Models is included which contains much detailed information about this locomotive including drawings and a photo of the actual locomotive with original warranty information. Over the years the brass finish has developed a beautiful patina which enhances the fine details on this model.I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which was purchased through a dealer from another owner, has been in our collection for over five years. It was brought home about 1 month ago and has not left its box except for photography purposes. It is now being offered for sale so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway equipment from geared locomotives. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this opportunity to acquire a rare and beautiful Mich-Cal Shay No. 2. This fine model will be shipped in its original box with original packing materials, double boxed, at buyer's expense and we recommend shipping via USPS Priority Mail insured (Condition: Brand New)

RARE CHELSEA Ship's Bell Clock & Barometer Set Columbus 500 Year Limited Edition

It is my please to offer for sale a VERY RARE Chelsea Ship Wheel Clock and Barometer set. This set was made to commemorate Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World 500 years ago. This set has been tested and works brilliantly. The clock moves appropriately and the bell chimes when it is supposed to. This brass set comes in its original box and has all paperwork and the key to wind. This is a mechanical clock with no battery. There is a blemish on the top left of the barometer where I believe it rubbed against it's housing. There are some other small blemishes. One felt pad is missing from one of the 4 feet. Easily replaced. Box is in good shape with one small tear under the lid. My feedback and rating speaks for itself. I try to be as honest and forthcoming as possible. This is one of those whales that I have never seen on Ebay. It is a shipman dream. Someone who loves nautical or shipwright theme would love to have this. Chelsea is known for quality materials. Scarce Welch Spring 8-Day Time and Strike Calendar Clock Italian No. 3 Working

Sold on eBay February 27th, 2025

Scarce Welch Spring 8-Day Time and Strike Calendar Clock Italian No. 3 Working

Scarce Welch Spring 8-Day Time and Strike Calendar Clock Italian No. 3 Working Up for sale is this scarce Welch Spring 8-day time and strike calendar clock Italian no.3, Circa 1870. Mr. Welch was a world traveler and named many of his clocks with foreign names hence "Italian". It features the B.B. Lewis Perpetual Calendar mechanism with the last patent date Dec. 20, 1868. B.B. Lewis Clock Co. was the original maker of this clock. He later went to work for Welch Spring and this clock went with him and was added to the Welch line. It strikes a gong with the number of hours and also shows the month, date and day. This clock measures 18" tall x 11" wide x 5 1/4" deep and is in overall very good condition. It has the original dials, pendulum, glass and door latches. The hands are also original except the small hand for the day on the top dial. The rosewood veneered case is nice, but the base has some repairs, refinishing in a darker color and some veneer loss which seems to be very common on these clocks. It still looks quite good in my opinion. The key is included which also turns the top door latch. The label on the inside back has a lot of wear. The B.B. Lewis label on the inside of the bottom door is quite good except for a small 1" x 1/2" place where it is worn off. You will not be disappointed in this rare clock. It is running very well at the time of this listing but may need slight adjustment after shipping.
