The Fox and the Grapes motif antique cuckoo clock. This is an amazing clock with very detailed carvings. I have never seen a carved fox that comes close to the one on this clock. The bird, grapes and leaves are truly spectacular. The lighter wood tone of the walnut is warm and draws onlookers to the clock. This is a rare cuckoo/quail clock. The Quail chirps on the quarter hour. It chirps once at a quarter past the hour, twice on the half hour, three times at the 9:00 position and 4 times on the hour. Gorgeous & Large Black Forest Cuckoo Quail Clock ** The Crow, Fox & Grapes
For your consideration is a beautiful antique Black Forest Cuckoo Quail clock in exceptional running condition and serviced within the last 10 years. The case is in wonderful condition, showing only what I consider to be 2-3 excellent professional repairs to the reverse side of the upper crest and 1 leaf tip on the middle left side has lost a tiny amount of surface cover, but the tip is still there. A teeny tiny brad is missing from the numeral IX and there is a slight vertical hairline directly behind the fox or below the #6. I can't imagine any 100+++ year old cuckoo clock that hasn't received some repair attention. The Fox & the Crow of Aesop's Fable is the stylistic theme of this clock. The fox and crow has either a glass or a plastic eye. The large dial measuring apprx. 6 7/8" features celluloid numerals and lovely carved bone hands produced by BoneHands out of Canada - who was definitely primo & one of the best! The cuckoo and quail birds bob and flap their wings - Click on Video below. This clock was imported from Germany by George Kuehl ca. 1910. The Kuehl Clock Company was founded by Theodore (b.1865) and George Kuehl, who were born in Germany and came to Chicago where they entered into the clock business. They prospered importing Black Forest cuckoo clocks and other types/styles of clocks including Gustav Becker, Kienzle and others. In 1891, they incorporated. They received Gold Medals at Chicago, Omaha, Paris and St. Louis Exhibitions. They were businessmen much like Florence Kroeber, who was also born in Germany and had connections with European/German clock manufacturers who supplied him with foreign made clocks which he sold through his store in NY. The thirty hour restored serviced movement is stamped GK - the bellows were recovered and rest upon the old pipes which produce a marvelous tone. DIMENSIONS: 26" height not including the pendulum or weights; width at the uppper crest is 18 1/2"; depth from the crow's wing to the wall is 11"; weight is just over 8 pounds NOT including the 3 weights that total apprx 8 pounds. Antique German Black Forest Cuckoo Quail Clock, PHS (Running Condition)
I am relisting this antique cuckoo quail clock after I noticed additional old repairs and age related cracks, splits to the wood carvings. I also decided to reshoot all the pictures in natural light to show more of the carving details. I apologize to my customers who placed their bids, but felt it necessary to disclose these additional details.This is a very beautiful antique German Black Forest Cuckoo Quail Clock made by Phillip Haas and Sons, circa 1900 - 1910. The theme of the clock is “Fox and Grapes” which is based on a Aesop’s Fable. The 30 hour cast brass pinned movement was restored recently and operates as it should ( See Video ). The Phillip Haas and Sons leaping rabbit logo is shown on the top of the brass movement near the escapement. The newer bellows and pipes sound great! The wood carvings are beautifully done with some old repairs, age wood splits and missing leaf tips. ( Please look closely at the pictures for a better view ). The clock has its original wood cuckoo and quail birds which retain most of their paint and have flapping wings and moving beaks. Original 7 inch wood dial with nailed on Roman numerals, gorgeous carved bone hands, back door with wire gongs, leaf pendulum and 3 matching cone weights. The clock is 26 inches high, (Not counting the weights and pendulum), 18 1/2 inches wide on the crest and about 12 inches deep. Antique Cuckoo Quail Clock excellent working condition.
Offered as a (Buy It Now) is this very beautiful Antique German Black Forest Cuckoo Quail clock, circa 1905. The clock is in excellent condition and has been restored. The theme of the clock is Fox and Grapes based on a Aesop’s Fable. The brass 30 hour movement was recently cleaned with a few bushings installed. The original pipes and bellow tops have been covered in leather and new paper, their sound is just beautiful. Please watch the video provided. The carvings are in excellent condition with a few minor repairs to the top bird wing and several leaves below. The repairs are very well done so look at all the pictures for a better view. The 6 1/2 inch dial retains its original nailed on numerals and a pair of beautiful carved bone hands. The dial does have some age splits but nothing to obvious. The clock is 27 inches tall, 18 inches wide on the crest and about 11 inches deep. Included is a gorgeous original leaf pendulum and 3 large pine cone weights. Offered as a “Buy It Now” is this beautiful, restored antique Cuckoo Quail Clock in the “Fox and Grapes” theme based on a Aesop’s Fable, circa 1910. The carvings are in wonderful condition. I don’t see any damage but there may be a leaf tip repair ( lower right leaf near grape cluster) which is hard to see. The 30 hour cast brass movement was restored last year and runs perfectly. Up for auction is this really nice Antique Black Forest cuckoo quail clock in the (Fox & Grapes Theme). The clock was made between the late 1910’s - 1920’s by the company of A. Maier, Germany. The carvings are very well done with nice full dimensional clusters of grapes, fox and crow. There are some old repairs to the crown near the base and wing of the bird, which are hard to notice.
