Antique 1860s E. Howard & Co Boston Astronomical Regulator Gravity Clock #233 Antique 1860s E. Howard & Co Boston Astronomical Regulator Gravity Clock #233 Description This auction is for one of three really amazing antique clocks I have listed this week from the same massive local estate. The clock is an extremely rare Astronomical Regulator that was made by E. Howard & Company probably back in the 1860s or so. It has the number 233 on the dial. The massive clock measures about 60" tall, 18.5" wide and 11" deep and the back of the clock is a solid steel plate, so it weighs about 300 lbs. The clock has the original pendulum and single and is in excellent cosmetic condition. The only issue I see is that the piece that the pendulum sits on as a pivot point has a broken pendulum wire or strap that needs to be replaced (very common part and an easy fix). When it was together and wall mounted it worked good, so it should run fine once that strap is repaired. Looks to be all original. Note that this can't obviously be shipped easily, but I can arrange for shipping. It will be expensive - probably $1000-$2000 depending on location. The clock is an extremely rare Astronomical Regulator that was made back in the 1800s and used by the Navy to set their ship chronometers. The clock is unmarked from what I can see and it has a gravity escapement that uses 2 heavy weights - both included. It was meant to stand on the floor and has an unusual sliding door on the back to access the back of the movement. The clock is missing the pendulum unfortunately, and is untested. Besides the missing pendulum it's in great condition and looks complete. This is a massive clock and it measures about 70.5" tall, 21.75" wide and 11" deep and it's VERY heavy. Note that this can't obviously be shipped easily, but I can arrange for shipping. It will be expensive - probably $1000-$2000 depending on location. The individual that bought it new loved mechanically intricate items since he was a mechanical engineer and I sold him a few unique items over the years. He was a bachelor and had no problem buying items he enjoyed and found it relaxing watching this clock’s operation. Sad to say he passed away about 3 weeks after he purchased it. I purchased it together with some other of his items from his sister, who had no interest in them. His sister showed me the catalog from Abrasax Design Group where he bought it new for $7000. Twin Fusee Sterling Silver bracket clock 1923
Sterling Silver cased twin fusee clock, hallmarked at London in 1923 and the case made by William Comyns (& Sons). (Likely his sons, as William died in 1916). The movement is English, a substantial twin chain fusee, striking the hours on a gong. It has the London style pendulum that adjusts easily without removal. Green silk panels were added as seen in the last photo.The clock was destined for America and the dial is signed by the retailer Black Starr and Frost. (Founded in 1810 they are renowned to be America's first jeweler on Fifth Avenue.) This would have been a very costly item in its day.This is a substantial clock, weighing nearly 14 Lbs. (The Sterling value alone is approaching $2000.) It stands 16" tall by 9" wide and 6" deep, with a 5" dial. It comes with a brass English style bow key that was probably originally silver plated.I will only ship this with the movement separated to ensure safe transit. This is a sweet set up. It would make a great addition to your shop, a nice portable station for doing demonstrations at shows, or even a nice museum display. It has a pretty old cord, so as a disclaimer, I would suggest replacing it. However, there are no bare spots, I plugged it in and it runs fine. The one drawer cabinet is solid walnut. It is in good, used in a shop condition. There are oil stains, bumps and bruises, like you would expect to find. It seems like a very rare headstock with power take off gearing. I haven't seen many like this. There are many attachments, parts, pivot drills, collets, gears, saw wheels, etc. that can be seen in the pictures. This belonged to a well known northeastern machinist horologist who died a few years back. For shipping, I would like to detach the motor and lathe from the lid and wrap/pack separately (and well), but this will require re-assembly on your part, so if you don't want that you can let me know and I will try to wrap it as it is. Antique 1800s HUGE Jewelry Store Wall Regulator Gingerbread Clock Commercial Vtg Antique 1800s HUGE Jewelry Store Wall Regulator Gingerbread Clock Commercial Vtg Description This auction is for one of three really amazing antique clocks I have listed this week from the same massive local estate. Unfortunately, I was unable to find out where this clock came from previously but it appears to be a MONSTEROUS advertising wall clock. It's designed to look like a Victorian gingerbread clock or wall regulator but it's extremely oversized - it measures about 95" tall (YES, 95" tall!), 31.5" wide and 9.5" deep. The glass panel on the front is reverse painted with the word JEWELER and I would bet it originally had a jeweler's name as well, but it was removed when it was sold. Has a solid wood, Eastlake style case and it has the original pendulum and single weight. I'm not 100% sure it's working but it was ticking when I had it wall mounted - it's hard to test because you have to level it perfectly and it's so large - it's very hard to do. Not sure the maker - I did not remove the dial. Just an amazing piece and in great cosmetic condition with some normal wear here and there. Note that this can't obviously be shipped easily, but I can arrange for shipping. It will be expensive - probably $1000-$2000 depending on location.
