Bardon Clichy Master Wall Clock Konigsberg Germany Seal 1923 Pendulum Battery
HistoryVery little made it thru the WWII attacks on Konigsberg, Germany. First the shelling from the Royal Air Force inn August of 1944 and then by Soviet shelling in April of 1945. This one of a kind, Master Bardon clock, with a Konigsberg Seewarte seal somehow survived. Whether it was sheltered in the underground German bunkers or in the partial remains of the Konigsberg Observatory it did survive. The Observatory, a semi-circular two story research and observation facility with a brick vault (considered a regional architectural monument) is related to the clock via the Seewarte engraving on the clock seal."Seewarte" loosely translates as Naval Observatory or Oceanic Observatory or it could also be referring to the Atlantic Meteor voyage which mapped the ocean floor with the first sonic equipment and included the Konigsberg area in 1925-1927. The seal on this clock is also engraved Conigsberg, as it was first spelled for a period following the locations inception in 1843 as a mere Prussian settlement called Twangste.A piece of history from a location rich in history. Hitler had envisioned Konigsberg as a museum for everything the Germans had found in Russia Following the end of WWII and the Potsdam Agreement, Konigsberg, Germany became part of the Soviet Union (now Russia) and has remained so ever since. The Soviet Union renamed Konigsberg to Koliningrad. Today Konigsberg is of world interest as a Russian held area that is separated from the rest of Russia by two NATO countries. The situation with Ukraine makes this Russian held area of interest. Russia is most likely where this clock was purchased.Otto Pratje worked at the Konigsberg University with his chief study the geology of sea beds and he participated in the Meteor Atlantic expedition 1925-1926 eminating from Konigsberg. In 1937 he was appointed to establish and direct marine geological section of the Deutshe Seewarte at Hamburg. Both seafaring ventures produced official topographic and administrative maps of Germanys waters. Many dead underwater volcano's rising 1000 ft high in the ocean were identified for the first time with their 1st generation sonar equipment.Clock MechanicsThis Bardon Master clock appears to be one of a kind. Back is marble. Hangs at 52-1/2" long and 12" wide and 7 " deep. This is a battery run master clock with pendulum. Most likely from the Observatory in Koliningrad Konigsberg per the Seewarte seal on the front. Clocks by Bardon, Brillie and Vaucanson all embody similar principles. The coil is in the base. Extremely rare. Made in Clichy, France. Located at Etablissments bardon at the Societe Anonyme de Construction Electrique et Mechanique during the production years 1920-1925. Bardon hanging battery electromagnetic clock with oak case Bardon, Clichy. Charles Edouard GuillaumeThe Nobel Prize in Physics 1920 Precise measurement plays an important role in science. To provide a basis for precise measurements, the metric system and a German legal meter were instituted to define lengths. However, different materials expand differently when temperatures change, which limits the ability to make very precise measurements. In 1896 Charles-Edouard Guillaume succeeded in finding an alloy of nickel and steel that registered almost no change in length and volume as a result of temperature changes. The invar nickel-steel alloy had a significant effect on scientific instruments and incandescent light bulbs and was used in this clock. If you need this item shipped, that would be undertaken on your end. Purely American Made.Franklin "Frank" Herschede was born on July 30, 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio.In 1873, at the age of 16, he began working as an apprentice watch and clock repairman for Charles Cook.In 1877, he went into business for himself and moved to Vine and 5th Street in Cincinnati. He diversified into jewelry, watches, diamonds, etc., and in 1885, the store moved to larger quarters at the corner of Arcade and Vine.In 1885, noting the success of Walter H. Durfee, Herschede began importing movements and having cases made in a nearby cabinet shop on Front Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. Frank’s clock business expanded to the point that he purchased the cabinet shop in 1900.In 1901, Frank exhibited in the South Carolina and West Indian Exposition at Charleston, South Carolina, where he received a gold medal for his hall clocks. This was the first of several medals earned by the firm.Frank's son, Walter, graduated from high school in 1902, and began work in the cabinet shop. On December 29, 1902 the Herschede Hall Clock Company was incorporated. In that same year, Herschede began to produce his own tubes and install them in his clocks. In 1903 the Herschede Hall Clock Company factory moved from Front Street to 1011-1015 Plum Street. In 1904 the Herschede Hall Clock Company won several medals in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904: a gold medal for the best hall clock, a gold medal for the best hall clock cases, and a silver medal for tubular chimes. In 1909, the Herschede Hall Clock Company leased the building next door at 1007-1009 Plum Street to manufacture clock movements. The first movement passed final inspection on January 10, 1911. In 1913, a third melody, “Canterbury Chimes” was added to the Whittington and Westminster chimes. The tune was composed by Charles Eisen, "a gifted American pianist," especially for Herschede. (If you have a Herschede clock with this tune and are a musician, we'd appreciate having the tune so we can add it to our clock chime tunes page in this reference library... contact us and let's talk about how to make this happen... thanks in advance. We'd also like to have a digital recording of this tune.)At the Panama-Pacific International Exposition the firm won two additional major awards: grand prize was presented to the Herschede Hall Clock Company for chime hall clocks and mantel clocks, and a gold medal was awarded for the hall clock cabinets manufactured by the company.By the early 1920's the Herschede Hall Clock Company had opened branch sales offices in New York City, then in Chicago and San Francisco. Frank Herschede died on September 15, 1922, and Walter was named president in January of 1923.In 1925, Walter began to work with Mr. Warren to develop electric movement chime clocks. By April of 1926, the Revere Clock Company came into being.By 1927 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had added a pair of smaller lines of clocks, including a clock (about 6’ in height) and a “petite” clock (generally under 7’ in height). These were produced in the same styles as the larger hall clocks.By 1929 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had some 300 employees, but the Great Depression caused a significant reduction in demand for hall clocks (and just about everything else except jobs)!By 1933 the Herschede Hall Clock Company changed its primary focus on the lower end, introducing an inexpensive line of electric clocks called “Crown Clocks”.On February 4, 1934, Walter's son, Richard Herschede, began working fulltime with his father. The Herschede Hall Clock Company ceased clockmaking during WWII, focusing its manufacturing expertise on observational instruments and optical components for the military. Subsequent to the war, clockmaking resumed, but never regained its pre-war momentum. Eventually, the firm branched out into, of all things, the manufacture of parking meters! In 1952 the Herschede Hall Clock Company began using imported Junghans movements in its non-tubular bell clocks. Then, in 1959, in the midst of extreme economic difficulties, the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association lured the Herschede Hall Clock Company to move its plant to Starkville, Mississippi, with the new factory opening in May of 1960.In 1973, the Herschede Hall Clock Company merged with Howard Furniture and Briarwood Lamps to become Arnold Industries, Inc.On September 23, 1983, Herschede announced a plan to restructure the Herschede Hall Clock division from a manufacturer of the finished clocks to a supplier of quality tubular bell movements to the industry. The firm briefly resumed production of clocks in 1989, making approximately 20 clocks between that year and 1992 under the ownership of Howard W. Klein and Robert Eggering of St. Louis, MO. The firm was then sold to R&M Imports of Waynesville, OH, which manufacturers replacement parts for existing Herschede clocks CONDITIONGood antique condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, light scuffing / marking, working DIMENSIONS24 x 18.5" d x 86" hPAYMENTThe sooner you pay, the sooner you get your item. The Designers Consignment insists on receiving payment within 3 days of your winning bid or Purchase, otherwise we reserve the right to make a second chance offer to the second place bidder or re-list the item. Please let us know if you have any additional questions SHIPPING & HANDLINGWe are currently unable to ship to international US locations. Twin Fusee Sterling Silver bracket clock 1923
Sterling Silver cased twin fusee clock, hallmarked at London in 1923 and the case made by William Comyns (& Sons). (Likely his sons, as William died in 1916). The movement is English, a substantial twin chain fusee, striking the hours on a gong. It has the London style pendulum that adjusts easily without removal. Green silk panels were added as seen in the last photo. The clock was destined for America and the dial is signed by the retailer Black Starr and Frost. (Founded in 1810 they are renowned to be America's first jeweler on Fifth Avenue.) This would have been a very costly item in its day. This is a substantial clock, weighing nearly 14 Lbs. (The Sterling value alone is approaching $2000.) It stands 16" tall by 9" wide and 6" deep, with a 5" dial. It comes with a brass English style bow key that was probably originally silver plated.I will only ship this with the movement separated to ensure safe transit. (Clear instructions for re-assembly will be included.) (Condition: Refurbished)

FULLY PROPERLY RESTORED SETH THOMAS 4 BELL SONORA CHIME CLOCK ADAMANTINE CASE
eBay FULLY AND PROPERLY RESTORED SETH THOMAS 4 BELL SONORA CHIME CLOCK ADAMANTINE CASE Offered for sale in this auction is a very nice and fully restored Seth Thomas four bell Sonora Chime Westminster chime mantel clock. This model, Chime Clock No. 1, is shown in Ly’s Seth Thomas book on page 149. It is listed as item 374 and gives a date of manufacture of 1911. This clock will play the Westminster Chime on the quarter hour on four large 3.25-inch Sonora bells that are the largest bells that Seth Thomas offered in any of the Sonora Chime clocks. The clock plays Westminster Chime on these bells and then strikes out the hours on the 4th bell. I can only describe the sound as incredible and this is one of the few four bell clocks that I have owned that has comes with the large bells. I have attached a file so that you can hear for yourself. The Adamantine finish is in great condition with the usual dimples that come with an item of this vintage. The five-inch porcelain dial is as close to perfect as you will find. The clock comes with both the original pendulum bob and an original Seth Thomas key. The clock has the 89 M movement for the time and strike and the 90 movement for the chime. Both movements have highly polished back plates and have been restored to a like-new condition using the proper restoration methods. The clock also has the Chime-Silent lever that allows you to turn off the quarter hour chime from the side of the clock. The clock will still strike out the hours in the silent mode. I ask you to please examine the high-resolution pictures carefully as they provide much of the description for this fine timepiece. Case dimensions are 13.5 inches tall, 15.25 inches wide and 7 inches deep. WHAT ARE SONORA CHIMES? From 1909 through 1923, Seth Thomas offered Sonora Chime clocks. These clocks have two separate movements, one for time and strike and another movement to play the Westminster quarter hour chimes on a patented set of bells. These clocks were expensive, with the four and five bell clocks costing a week’s wages for the average worker. Because of the cost, these clocks were usually only found in the homes of the more affluent people. The clocks have a beautiful sound that many consider superior to clocks that strike on rods. In the final years of production, Seth Thomas used rods instead of bells in some models to save money. Still, most collectors only consider the clocks with bells to be true Sonora Chime. ABOUT THE MEANING OF ADAMANTINE Adamantine means unbreakable, sturdy or hard wearing. The Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York developed and patented this early form of plastic in 1880, and Seth Thomas soon after acquired the rights to the material. Celluloid was the first thermoplastic and was made by combining nitrocellulose with camphor. It can take on many colors with the addition of dyes and other agents. Molding and shaping are easily accomplished, so it could imitate more expensive materials such as stone or ivory. Many people use the word incorrectly, only Seth Thomas had the right to use this material on their clock cases. WHAT MAKES A CLOCK A GOOD VALUE? The rules of economics are fairly straightforward Simply put, it is almost impossible to spend a little and get a lot. Antique and vintage clocks follow these rules as well. You can buy “As Found” clocks for less money. Then you have to pay a shop to go through the movement and when you are done, you have spent more than if you would have bid on the nicer clocks in the beginning. I have tried through the photos to show the basic steps that I do in restoring these wonderful machines to their original state. My goal is to provide you with a quality time piece that will provide enjoyment and be a source of pride in your home for years to come. Equally important to me is to provide you with a clock that I believe will retain its value over the years. That is what I think constitutes real value in antique and vintage clocks. MY PHILOSOPHY ON CLOCKS AND CLOCK MOVEMENTS. The only way to properly repair a movement is to completely disassemble, clean and inspect all parts, and make the needed repairs by proper horoligical methods. This includes the rebushing of all worn holes and the polishing of any rough pivots. The movements are then reassembled, lubricated with a high-quality clock oil and test run for 8 days. This is a very time intensive process but is the only correct way to properly recondition a clock movement. You should expect a movement repaired in this manner to run for ten years trouble-free. I have been doing clock repair for 40 years. I apprenticed under an Oregon State licensed repairman and have been a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) since 1981. I do not make a living doing this; it has become a passion of mine. I go to estate sales, auctions, and search places like eBay and Craigslist to find clocks that are in need of restoration. Once they are made like new mechanically, I put them up for sale in the hopes of paying for my materials and upgrading my personal collection. My hope is also to provide you with an heirloom to cherish for years to come. BUYER RESPONSIBILITY Both parties need to be fully engaged in the buying process for a transaction to be a success. Buyers need to understand that the clocks I sell are between 80 and 140 years old. While the movements are fully serviced, all of my clocks show some scars from these decades of use. I try to describe these marks as best I can and mention them in my listing text. I count on the buyer to read the entire auction text and examine the high-resolution pictures closely to make sure the clock meets your needs and expectations. I am always willing to make good on any shipping damage through the insurance process but I am no longer willing to offer partial refunds simply because the buyer did not read the listing or examine the auction photos. PAYMENT AND SHIPPING. People deserve to be treated fairly and to expect that their transaction will be handled as if the business was being done face to face. Read my feedback and you can see that I live by these words. I know that the shipping cost seems high but this is an item of substantial value so it will be sent out fully insured and with signature confirmation. I will provide positive feedback for buyers as soon as payment has been received and I also provide a set of General Clock Instructions that will answer about 95% of the questions that may arise during the set-up of the clock. In addition, specific instructions on how to properly operate the clock and reset the strike are provided as well as how to handle Daylight Savings time. Due to the vibration of shipping, no guarantee can be given but this item is covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee program. Also, I pride myself in excellent preparation for shipment and can help via email or by phone in getting the clock set up. Clock will be shipped by UPS so I cannot ship to PO boxes. Thank you for looking at my auction. RECENT CUSTOMER FEEDBACK Great seller and clock man. Clock arrived with great packing. This is a great seller. Unusual Fancy Antique New Haven Westminster Chime Mantle Clock ~ Nice Condition
Unusual Fancy Antique New Haven Westminster Chime Mantle Clock ~ Nice Condition Unusual Fancy Antique New Haven Westminster Chime Mantle Clock ~ Nice Condition Click images to enlarge Description This nice looking and somewhat rare to find clock was made by the New Haven Clock Company in New Haven, Conn., USA, right around 100 years ago. The last patent date on the movement is 1923. It has a very complicated (signed New Haven) movement that is mechanically sound and complete. We have wound it up and find that it runs and chimes, but it has not been tested beyond that or serviced by us. It has very nice sounding chimes. The case is in good condition, still maintaining the nicely aged original finish. As seen in the pictures, it shows very well when on the shelf or mantle. It is a nice size clock, measuring 10" wide x 16" high x 7" deep. In case you are not familiar with Westminster Chimes, these are the ones that play a tune every 15 minutes; 4 notes on the quarter; 8 notes on the ½ hour; 12 notes at the ¾ hour; and then the full 16 note tune on the hour, followed by the hour toll, i.e. 1 toll at 1:00, 2 tolls at 2:00, etc. The silvered dial with raised brass numerals, solid brass bezel and glass crystal are also nicely aged and all in very good condition. This clock comes complete with a key and the original pendulum. Payment Ebay makes it pretty easy to pay for purchases in just about any way you choose. Any payment that requires time to process (clear) will delay shipping. Email us with questions concerning other forms of payment in addition to those that ebay offers. Shipping Most clocks will be shipped within 5 business days of received payment. We like to give each clock sold a final test run and observation before packing. This helps ensure that the new owner will have a satisfying experience. All items are carefully packaged with around 1 ½" of packing material between your purchase and the box. All items are shipped insured. We never anticipate damage but in the event that an incident occurs, we will help with insurance claims as much as possible. Be very sure to save all packaging material if there is a problem. Normally, all shipping costs are either based on package size and weight, or covered by a specified flat rate. Smaller items can be combined to save shipping costs. Because clocks require large boxes, Priority Mail is usually far to expensive. Therefore,we quote either FedEx or UPS prices in most cases. *For any shipments other than the lower 48 United States, contact us first for a shipping quote before bidding. Do not go by the shipping calculator.* Terms of Sale All sales are final, so please be sure that you will be happy by reviewing the pictures and descriptions that we provide. Antiques clocks are delicate and very difficult to ship properly, and also very expensive to ship. We honestly want you to be happy. We try to keep an excellent feedback rating by being fair and honest. We try to describe all items accurately so that you pretty much know exactly what to expect when your purchase arrives. It should be understood before bidding that all antique clocks, unless otherwise noted, have nicks, tarnished brass, stains, minor dents, possibly touch ups and minor scratches on the glass, all of which are normally acquired from long term honest use. It is nearly impossible to find one in "mint" condition. If a clock has damage from misuse, it will be noted. If a clock is sold as "in running condition," it means that we have test run it before listing it and feel confident that it will run for you. About Us Mainly, we buy, sell, repair, restore and collect clocks. Once in awhile we do offer other types of antiques and collectibles for sale, but mainly clocks are what we're about. We spend quite a bit of time traveling around the northeast buying clocks and clock parts, and many times we are able to buy large quantities from clock collector estates or clock dealers who are downsizing or closing out altogether. We are a very small, family run enterprise.. Ben handles all repairs in house. He has been restoring clocks since 1976, and a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors since 1978. Jen and Lana handle all of the pictures, listings, marketing and design, as well as some of the restoration work. We all help out in the packing and shipping department and are dedicated to making sure your clock is packaged carefully and properly in order to arrive safely. We also send an instruction sheet by email for each clock sold. Contact Us You may notice that since joining eBay in 2000 our feedback has been positive. We only receive feedback about a third of the time, which means we have actually had several thousand positive transactions over the past 23 years that are not recorded in the feedback system. We definitely don't want any bad feedbacks, so we try to describe everything exactly as it is and if we do something wrong, we will make it right. If you email us on Saturday, itt may be Monday before you hear back from us. We do not use our computers on Sunday, the Lord's day, but will answer any emails Monday through Saturday and although we do not expect any problems, we will do whatever we can to resolve any issues. Please do not wait until late in an auction to ask questions (we may not be here). *Also, please do not ask us to falsify shipping records for international shipping. Honesty is always the best policy.* Get images thatmake Supersized seem small.Showcase your items with Auctiva sListing Templates!THE simple solution for eBay sellers.
