Chelsea "The Mariner" Ship's Bell Clock Ltd Ed on Wood Base Running & Striking
eBay Chelsea "The Mariner" Ship's Bell Clock w/ Mahogany Base Limited Edition 6" Clock Face - Running & Striking Ltd Ed Repro of the 1911 Yacht Wheel Clock Item Description Beautiful Vintage Chelsea Ship's Bell Clock, the Mariner model, here for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself! The pictures do not do justice to the size of this piece, it stands 17.5" tall.Nice looking marine/nautical clock here. Made by the Chelsea Clock Company in the USA. "The Mariner" model is one of the most sought out Ship's Bell clocks made by Chelsea. This is a limited edition release of this model by Chelsea. Would guess from design that the clock was made sometime in the ??? (still researching). This offering by Chelsea was only a 500 limited edition run, so very rare to find one outside of Chelsea or a fine jeweler. this clock is number 65 of 500.The original this model is based upon was first issued by Chelsea in 1911This fine Ship's Bell Clock is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a high end auction house or clock shop. We have been selling items out of our home for over 35 years. We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the high end auction houses and Clock Shops experience.Get this for a nice discount from what you would pay at the Chelsea store website, or a fine jeweler, which are typically offering this mode at around $6,250.This nautically inspired clock is considered one of the finest ever made in this country. A true masterpiece. Has a ship's wheel styled case that then sits on a beautiful mahogany wood base. The clock has a ship's bell mechanism which strikes 1 to 4 double bells at the 12, 4 8, & 12 hours. Then at the half hour the movement strikes the double bells for the hour and one bell strike for the half hour. The movement has an 11 jeweled movement. The movement itself is made from 364 brass and gold plated precision parts The solid brass bezel is opened by the side button latch on the left and then is hinged on the right side. Bezel is securely attached and latch working as expected. The clock's face is crafted from etched/incised brass that is hand silvered, enameled and lacquered. The Ship's Wheel ring is finished using a hand-rubbed process and then lacquered to prevent tarnish. A heavy piece here, weighs around 33lbs before packing, so expect the shipping cost to reflect that.Nice brass colored lacquered case here. Ship's wheel spindles are all in place. The brass case is all there. Very minor finish loss to the brass clock case and the wood base from use/age. No dings or dents to the metal case. The glass is intact, no cracks or blisters. There is a line of some sort of residue or glue on the right back side of the mahogany case, see pic. There is a slight scratch on the bezel by the number 1. A small blemish on the bronzed metal base above the wood bottom closer to the right side. The clock comes in the bottom part of the original case, no top, and with some of the original Chelsea paperwork. The bottom of the box shows some minor wear and tear. The clock has an 8 day mechanical brass movement. The wind springs feel sound when keyed. The clock will come with a wind key. The clock has been running and striking as expected, since we acquired it. So, the clock is being sold in running and striking condition at this juncture. Nice mahogany wood base that this clock is securely attached to. The Chelsea Ship's Bell Clock on wood stand is 17.5" tall, by 14" across, by 5.5" wide. The clock face is 6" across. A heavy piece, so expect the shipping cost to reflect that. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. This clock's movement has not been serviced by us since we acquired the clock. No guarantee the clock will be in operating condition, once shipped or delivered to you. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description. As can be expected when dealing with a vintage clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, we would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it. Make sure that this clock meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. The item can be returned, there is a 15% restocking fee to do so. So again, ask all questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the clock on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it. Don't be shy, we are always open to reasonable suggestions! This clock is just waiting for the right collector out there to acquire and refurbish for their collection. It is a beloved companion that radiates warmth and charm throughout your home.Herschede, Gold Medal Winning Clocks Since 1885, Sheffield Model No 230, Starkvile Mississippi. Purely American Made.Franklin "Frank" Herschede was born on July 30, 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio.In 1873, at the age of 16, he began working as an apprentice watch and clock repairman for Charles Cook.In 1877, he went into business for himself and moved to Vine and 5th Street in Cincinnati. He diversified into jewelry, watches, diamonds, etc., and in 1885, the store moved to larger quarters at the corner of Arcade and Vine.In 1885, noting the success of Walter H. Durfee, Herschede began importing movements and having cases made in a nearby cabinet shop on Front Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. Frank’s clock business expanded to the point that he purchased the cabinet shop in 1900.In 1901, Frank exhibited in the South Carolina and West Indian Exposition at Charleston, South Carolina, where he received a gold medal for his hall clocks. This was the first of several medals earned by the firm.Frank's son, Walter, graduated from high school in 1902, and began work in the cabinet shop. On December 29, 1902 the Herschede Hall Clock Company was incorporated. In that same year, Herschede began to produce his own tubes and install them in his clocks. In 1903 the Herschede Hall Clock Company factory moved from Front Street to 1011-1015 Plum Street. In 1904 the Herschede Hall Clock Company won several medals in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904: a gold medal for the best hall clock, a gold medal for the best hall clock cases, and a silver medal for tubular chimes. In 1909, the Herschede Hall Clock Company leased the building next door at 1007-1009 Plum Street to manufacture clock movements. The first movement passed final inspection on January 10, 1911. In 1913, a third melody, “Canterbury Chimes” was added to the Whittington and Westminster chimes. The tune was composed by Charles Eisen, "a gifted American pianist," especially for Herschede. (If you have a Herschede clock with this tune and are a musician, we'd appreciate having the tune so we can add it to our clock chime tunes page in this reference library... contact us and let's talk about how to make this happen... thanks in advance. We'd also like to have a digital recording of this tune.)At the Panama-Pacific International Exposition the firm won two additional major awards: grand prize was presented to the Herschede Hall Clock Company for chime hall clocks and mantel clocks, and a gold medal was awarded for the hall clock cabinets manufactured by the company.By the early 1920's the Herschede Hall Clock Company had opened branch sales offices in New York City, then in Chicago and San Francisco. Frank Herschede died on September 15, 1922, and Walter was named president in January of 1923.In 1925, Walter began to work with Mr. Warren to develop electric movement chime clocks. By April of 1926, the Revere Clock Company came into being.By 1927 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had added a pair of smaller lines of clocks, including a clock (about 6’ in height) and a “petite” clock (generally under 7’ in height). These were produced in the same styles as the larger hall clocks.By 1929 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had some 300 employees, but the Great Depression caused a significant reduction in demand for hall clocks (and just about everything else except jobs)!By 1933 the Herschede Hall Clock Company changed its primary focus on the lower end, introducing an inexpensive line of electric clocks called “Crown Clocks”.On February 4, 1934, Walter's son, Richard Herschede, began working fulltime with his father. The Herschede Hall Clock Company ceased clockmaking during WWII, focusing its manufacturing expertise on observational instruments and optical components for the military. Subsequent to the war, clockmaking resumed, but never regained its pre-war momentum. Eventually, the firm branched out into, of all things, the manufacture of parking meters! In 1952 the Herschede Hall Clock Company began using imported Junghans movements in its non-tubular bell clocks. Then, in 1959, in the midst of extreme economic difficulties, the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association lured the Herschede Hall Clock Company to move its plant to Starkville, Mississippi, with the new factory opening in May of 1960.In 1973, the Herschede Hall Clock Company merged with Howard Furniture and Briarwood Lamps to become Arnold Industries, Inc.On September 23, 1983, Herschede announced a plan to restructure the Herschede Hall Clock division from a manufacturer of the finished clocks to a supplier of quality tubular bell movements to the industry. The firm briefly resumed production of clocks in 1989, making approximately 20 clocks between that year and 1992 under the ownership of Howard W. Klein and Robert Eggering of St. Louis, MO. The firm was then sold to R&M Imports of Waynesville, OH, which manufacturers replacement parts for existing Herschede clocks CONDITIONGood antique condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, light scuffing / marking, working DIMENSIONS24 x 18.5" d x 86" hPAYMENTThe sooner you pay, the sooner you get your item. The Designers Consignment insists on receiving payment within 3 days of your winning bid or Purchase, otherwise we reserve the right to make a second chance offer to the second place bidder or re-list the item. Please let us know if you have any additional questions SHIPPING & HANDLINGWe are currently unable to ship to international US locations. 1911 Serial Nunber 224! Herschede 9 Tube Hall Chime Bell Grandfather Clock
This is a Herschede 9 tube with a very low serial number being sold for restoration. It’s the 224th movement to come out of their factory. That puts it in Herschede’s first year of production, 1911! The case is stamped 4, 87, 827. I believe that it is a model 827, and maybe the 4th case or 87th case made. The clock runs and chimes and is in all around nice condition. Because of the value and scarceness of the clock, I’ll be critical of the piece. There are some slight veneer losses on the bottom side of the clock, maintenance records are not available, the moon dial shows significant los

Rare Chelsea 8.5” Dial Pedestal Presentation Clock
eBay For sale is an 8.5” dial Chelsea pedestal presentation clock, with original surface dial and re-nickeled case. Original Chelsea sales ledger record indicates the Chelsea movement was sold by Chelsea Clock Company to American Steam Gauge & Valve Company on May 7th, 1913. I added more photos to the listing including the clock next to an iPhone for size perspective - the 8.5” dial diameter is a significant presence Technically therefore we can alternatively refer to this clock as an American Steam Gauge Clock with Chelsea movement. I have seen it listed both ways in the very few examples sold over the years. The Chelsea movement serial number 83324 can be seen in one of the included photos. The time only movement is the marine model, currently keeping accurate time well within Chelsea’s factory standard. A key is included to lock and unlock the hinged bezel. A winding key will also be included. This clock was a presentation piece for Frederick A. Ryer, who in 1911 became the purchasing agent for the Boston & Albany RR ( owned by New York Central RR). The engraved signature is one of the finest we’ve seen for a clock of this era.If the clock needs to be adjusted in the future there is a functioning regulator accessible in the front of the dial.$2400 or best offer, plus $100 for double box packing, shipping via USPS registered insured priority, and tracking, to continental U.S. only. No returns, sale is final.I am a hobbyist, not a dealer, who has spent years putting together a discerning set of the finest Chelsea clocks from the pre-1930 area. Here’s your chance for a charming antique that would make for a wonderful holiday gift, or simply a useful mechanical instrument in your home. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

Precision Scale On3 Mich/Cal 16T Shay Locomotive
Brass O-Scale Michigan – California Lumber Company No. 2 Two-truck Shay Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills years ago when things were really carefully made and where attention to details counted. An example of legendary Japanese quality, this beautifully crafted scale model of one of the most interesting and famous of all Shay locomotives ever made – it is the oldest surviving Tee-boiler Shay now existing. From Micro Cast/Mizuno of Japan for the highly prized Precision Scale Company, serial number 01026. A beautifully crafted in great condition, scale model of possibly the last surviving Tee boiler Shay locomotive. Many of these geared locomotives were made by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, after obtaining the original design and permission from Ephraim Shay himself. Shay came up with this idea after noticing that the wooden track used in the forested areas of Michigan was not damaged by the rail cars carrying logs even though they were much heavier than the locomotives pulling the cars. He surmised that smaller wheels (36” diameter) was the difference and his design employed the same size wheel as the flat cars used. This geared design was also introduced in The Transportation Exhibits in the World Columbian Exposition of 1893.This model is based upon the first engineering redesign from the original patents and were first introduced in 1883-1884 – this older design lasted 23 years until dropped from Lima’s catalogue when the whole line of Shay’s was recast. The Tee-boiler was used on smaller engines ranging from 10 to 20 tons. This engine was originally sold to a Michigan company but was subsequently sold and shipped to California for use on the “Mich-Cal” logging operations active there Michigan California Lumber of Company of Camino, California, formed in 1918 from the failed El Dorado Lumber which morphed into the C. D. Danaher Lumber Company in 1911 and then Mich-Cal, used this locomotive on the Georgetown Divide operations and ended up as a switcher at their mill operations during the 1950’s. It is still there behind their offices today. This compact Shay was made in 1884, construction number 122, for three-foot gauge track and converted to oil from wood in about 1905. This number 2 was used for switching needs after the larger No. 7 Shay arrived in 1904. In logging practice, these locomotives were sometimes, depending upon grades, run uphill facing forward with empty flat cars behind and then, once loaded, was backed down the hill which guaranteed adequate water over the crown sheet. There were grades of 7% on this line. The three-foot gauge, two-truck, two-cylinder design provided a very compact power-plant with 26” drivers, 13,000 lbs. tractive power at 23 tons weight plus a smaller turning radius allowing for sharper curves in trackage and with reasonable fuel/water capacity for reasonable operating periods in the field. These small Shays were also used for switching and in industrial areas to move rail cars around – sometimes converted to standard gauge for industrial uses. This fine reproduction exhibits all of the careful detailing expected including accurate steel frame details with wooden bumpers, cylinder details including steam supply and exhaust distribution lines and fittings, connecting crank fittings, steam air compressor with related valves and lines, the cab with fully detailed boiler backhead controls, fuel oil bunker with fill lid and vent line in place with the water tank beneath is complete including sand box at the rear with fill caps in place – love the off-set headlight. The original paperwork from Iron Horse Models is included which contains much detailed information about this locomotive including drawings and a photo of the actual locomotive with original warranty information. Over the years the brass finish has developed a beautiful patina which enhances the fine details on this model.I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which was purchased through a dealer from another owner, has been in our collection for over five years. It was brought home about 1 month ago and has not left its box except for photography purposes. It is now being offered for sale so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway equipment from geared locomotives. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this opportunity to acquire a rare and beautiful Mich-Cal Shay No. 2. This fine model will be shipped in its original box with original packing materials, double boxed, at buyer's expense and we recommend shipping via USPS Priority Mail insured (Condition: Brand New)
