Extremely Rare Astronomical Regulator- 1876 Centennial Gold Medal Winner
Fantastic and enormous astronomical regular built by the German firm Gustov Becker and exhibited at the 1876 Centennials Exhibition where it won a gold medal. The clock was bought by prominent Philidelphia jeweler Samuel Kind, the first U.S. jeweler to sell diamonds. Massive movement and a 20 inch dial.S.KIND & CO. was founded by Samuel Kind in Philadelphia in 1872. Having escaped war torn Europe as a Jewish immigrant just a decade earlier, he had a vision for a new life that began to take shape with the opening of his own store. He became the first purveyor of diamonds in America, cultivating a higher end jewelry buying experience that previously would have only been available in Europe. Through his keen eye and business acumen, he built a jewelry house that would span over a century and became part of the fabric of Philadelphia Samual no doubt saw this magnificent clock at the 1876 Centennial held in Philidelphia, one of approximately twelve Astronomical Regulators made for the Exhibition by the firm of Gustav Becker then the largest clock producer in GermanyA cleaver marketing tool by Gustov Becker was the two sunken subdials which would be very labor intensive to make however this allowed for two further sunken plates for the perspective buyers to put their bussiness name on thus not looking out of place !This was the largest of the clocks produced with a 20" dial and enormous movement and bracket. And it begs to wonder if this was built into the wall of S. Kind Jewelers or perhaps a enormous floor standing clock as our example from Fontains Auctionsfrom a description of a floor standing Gustav Becker Astronomical Regulator clock sold by Fontains AuctionsGustav Becker Astronomical Floor Regulator. Large 16 in. silvered bronze astronomical dial with sweep minutes, 5.5 in. inset sub hour dial above 5.5 in. sub seconds dial, quality blued hands and gilt bronze bezel. Quality brass 8 day weight driven time only movement is signed on the rear plate ?Gustav Becker, Freiburg i/S? (in Schlesien) with ?GB? and crown over anchor mark, front and rear plates are numbered 118702; movement has deadbeat escapement with jeweled pallets, cable barrel exposed on the rear plate, maintaining power, large brass covered weight with quality 4 spoke pulley, long steel pendulum rod with 2 glass jar mercurial compensating pendulum, silvered beat indicator and beat adjustment on the pendulum rod. Exceptional Renaissance Revival carved walnut floor standing case with ebonized highlights has a pierced carved crest with filigree, seashell, turned and carved finials, raised burled panels below, long turned and tapered pendant side pieces with carved florets and incised spandrels in the upper door; the body door has a convex arch at the top under a carved drapery sash and the base has a 1 door compartment. Clock is in excellent condition, case is clean and original finish with no breaks or repairs, 2 top finials are replacements, dial has some wear to the silvering, movement is in running condition. Extremely rare and assumed to be a one of a kind piece, the carved case is of the highest grade and the movement is fine quality. This Has a Beautiful Rosewood Veneer Mahogany Wood Case with Octagon Short Drop, and Carved Decorative Side Trim. The Lower Glass Tablet is Reverse Painted Glass with Black and Gilt Paint with Victorian Style Design. The Original Atkins Maker's Label is Inside the Lower Door. This Has an Atkins 8 Day Brass Mechanical Wind-Up "Time Only" Regulator Movement. The Dial is the Original Painted Metal Presentation Dial with Roman Numerals, Signed "Presented To Nonantum Lodge No.116 I.O.O.F. J.G. Davis P.G. 1872". Superb example of a EARLY Lenzkirch Clock. Has Key And Pendulum, winds up and works. The numbers around the dial are hand-painted on porcelain. Has normal wear for its age. If you look at the picture of the back of the case, the little wooden support near the door pull is missing on that side. I also included a picture of the only damage I can see but use your best judgment to determine condition and value. There seems to be a repair to the left rear foot that can’t be seen without picking the clock up. Questions welcome. Lenzkirch is Synonymous with German quality. This beautiful Antique 18

eBay IMPORTANT CIRCA 1900 FOLDING TRAVEL CLOCK - NEAR PRISTINE CONDITION produced expressly for Tiffany & Co. by A. Wittnauer Co., New YorkBeyond doubt, the best surviving historic example of its type.This rare antique travel clock is from my personal collection. Time has come for these horological gems to find new homes. Elegant Tiffany and Co. designs produced at the close of the 19th century through the early 21st century comprise a significant category of noteworthy clocks curated since 1970. I acquired this travel clock "sight unseen" long ago. Outwardly distinctive features - oversize folding case, dial treatment and apparent condition - were sufficiently compelling attributes to justify purchase. Little did I expect physical examination would reveal an illustrious provenance. Inscriptions on the hinged cover, back and front of the movement convey a remarkable story. The handsomely decorated interior cover is stamped Made for Tiffany & Co. by the Majestic Watch Co. Switzerland. An engraved script monogram underneath incorporates conjoined initials A W. Back plate of the nickel finished movement carries the identical Made for... inscription, along with "three 3 adj." and "fifteen15 jewels." Front plate of the movement exposed after removal of hands and dial provides another puzzle piece. It is die stamped MAJESTIC above A. Wittnauer.16 year old Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer came to New York City in 1872. In 1885, the brand name Wittnauer first appeared on watches. A. Wittnauer Co. did not manufacture movements. They were products of well established Swiss companies.The script monogram on the movement cover is that of Albert Wittnauer. Overarching quandaries... why is the dial not signed Tiffany & Co.why does the Wittnauer name only appear in an area hidden from all but repairmenThis travel clock (or an identical model absent "8 DAYS" on the dial) was manufactured in Switzerland with sole intent of retail sale exclusively by Tiffany & Co. The preeminent NYC jeweler commencing business in 1837 did not include Albert Wittnauer's late 19th century design among their prestigious merchandise. Thus, identification of the clock as a Tiffany & Co. product on the dial was not granted. NOTE: The movement was disassembled (including removal of mainspring from barrel), ultrasonically cleaned and rinsed, elements checked for wear, reassembled and lubricated with high-grade Swiss grease and two viscosity oils. Dust cover, bezel and thick beveled crystal were hand cleaned as was the case. I conditioned the leather covers and folds with saddle soap. Meticulous restoration ensures reliable operation for years. Typical labor and materials cost of professionally overhauling Swiss alarm clocks of this complexity is $350. eBay Antique 1860s Civil War Era Terhune & Edwards NY Iron Front 8 Day Mantle Clock. This is a beautiful clock, visually striking; the central castle scene is enhanced with two mother of pearl inlay chips. Very stable with its wide base. Pendalum and key are here, ticks away sweetly, and chimes on the hour.C.1860, Terhune & Edwards, 48 Cortlandt St, New York, 8-day time and chime, with handpainted, japanned iron front which has created a very hard, durable finish. It is a colored varnish rather than paint explaining why it has survived in such nice condition for so long. Note that the paint on the mother of pearl insets has worn.Adapted from online sources: Henry Terhune and George B. Edwards were in business from the late 1850's to 1872, most likely as assemblers and retailers for various Connecticut firms. When Edwards left the company in 1872, William Terhune joined the firm, which became Henry Terhune & Sons. Terhune seems to have been associated with the United States Clock Co. for many years. Terhune and Edwards specifically seem to have been associated with it (possibly ran it) ca. 1872, and probably earlier. Both Terhune & Edwards and the United States Clock Co. were at the 18 Courtlandt Street address. Measures 20" tall x 18" wide at the base x 4" deep. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
