FINEST Ca. 1900 Tiffany & Co. {Paris} Sterling Silver 1/4 Repeating Strut Clock

eBay TIFFANY & CO. SILVER BELLE ÉPOQUE QUARTER REPEATING STRUT CLOCKdoubtless the finest surviving example of its typeHighly prized clock from my personal collection. Time has come for these horological gems to find new homes. Elegant Tiffany and Co. designs from the turn of the century through the 1980s comprise a significant category of meritorious clocks curated since 1970. Yes; that's me setting the time to welcome 1974.The handsome French hallmarked first standard (.950 purity) silver bezel is beautifully proportioned, displaying jewelry grade finishing. A thick beveled crystal protects the matte gilt dial signed "Tiffany & Co." "8 Days" "France" and "Repeater Quarter Noteworthy aspects of the timepiece include delicate blued steel spade and whip hands, folding silver easel on robust hinge bracket signed "Sterling" "Tiffany & Co." and hallmarked with poincon of Paris silversmith Gerain Amond, and push-repeat steel arm with knurled brass button extending from side of the movement housing. The 8-day running pocket watch ebauche carries Swiss patent No. 7032, assigned on July 19, 1893 to watchmaker and inventor Amédée Pere Douard (1834-1913). The caliber was modified with addition of quarter repeating works by A. Comman of Paris; signing the rear movement plate "Made for Tiffany & Co." Interesting Factoids Dials of 19th century bedside and folding travel clocks were often gilded to reflect limited (candle or oil lamp) light, enabling time to be read at night. Similarly, frames containing important works of art were gilded throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Around 1910, electricity reached major metropolitan residences. Incandescent bulbs invented by Edison provided light with the flip of a switch. Following WWI, French and Swiss bedside, travel and carriage clocks incorporating very costly repeat functions became obsolete. Few of these horological marvels survive 125 years; even fewer quarter repeating specimens in fine operating order. NOTE: Earlier this year the complex movement was completely disassembled (including removal of mainsprings from barrels), ultrasonically cleaned and rinsed, elements checked for wear, pivots polished, two jewels replaced, the time train mainspring terminal restored, reassembled and lubricated with high-grade Swiss grease and two viscosity oils. Operation was bench tested for weeks and timekeeping regulated. The silver strut, bronze case back, movement housing and dust cover were hand cleaned, polished and lacquer sealed. Dial, hands and crystal were cleaned, and the sterling bezel hand polished to high luster. Meticulous restoration enhanced aesthetics, ensuring reliable mechanical operation for years. Typical labor and materials cost of professionally overhauling a quarter repeating clock of this caliber is $1,200. Please review descriptive information, study the photographs for details and enjoy the movie demonstrating quarter repeating. I'm available to respond to questions / concerns. Orton, Preston & Co. 30 Hour T&S Wooden Works Clock, Working, BEAUTIFUL

This is a slight variation on column and cornice clock made by Orton, Preston, & Co, ca. 1835-1837. It is currently working. Orton, Preston & Co. 30 Hour T&S Wooden Works Clock, Working, BEAUTIFUL Orton, Preston & Co. 30 Hour T&S Wooden Works Clock, Working, BEAUTIFUL Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters ORTON, PRESTON, & CO. CLOCK ORIGINAL CASE, MOVEMENT, & MOST PARTS 30 HOUR T&S CIRCA 1837 - 1837 This is a variation on a "Column and Cornice" clock made by Orton, Preston & Co., of Farmington, Connecticut. Details about this company are somewhat lacking; some researchers believe they bought some of their movements from Ephraim Downs. It is pretty well established that they purchased some of the equipment from Marsh and Gilbert after Marsh relocated to Ohio about 1834. Other of their movements are very similar to those made by Marsh & Gilbert. The movement in this clock appears to be one of those, and I believe is Type 7.153. This type movement can be seen in Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock by Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor, Figure 164, page 298. The firm seems to have been operational circa 1835 through 1837. I have also read that while their production took place in the twilight of the wooden works era, they were aiming for a more affluent clientele that the more common half column and splat clocks were geared towards. The workmanship and appearance of this clock is certainly consistent with that! This clock stands approximately 34 inches tall, 20 inches wide, and 7 inches deep. The movement is a 30 hour time and strike (on the hour only). The small uppermost glass is original, as (I believe) is the dial glass. The lower two glasses are old; I doubt however that the mirror is original. The lower glass may be original, but I cannot guarantee that. It has been nicely refinished. The dial, hands, pendulum bob, and weights are original. One toe on one of the claw feet has broken off. The weight cords were replaced pretty recently and the movement is clean. All I did to the movement was to lubricate it where appropriate. It has been running and striking nicely ever since. Though presently working, please note I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "AS-IS" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. On top of that, I have read that when new, these wooden movements were expected to have a 20 year life expectancy--yet here we are, nearly 200 years later! You still have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned or any reason--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Please ask questions and study the photos carefully, as they are part of the description. By the way, for safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box at no additional charge to you. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly. Mark Leavenworth & Co Wooden Works Half Column & Splat Clock 30 Hour T&S Working

Sold on eBay February 3rd, 2025

Mark Leavenworth & Co Wooden Works Half Column & Splat Clock 30 Hour T&S Working

This is an antique wooden works clock made by Mark Leavenworth. It is in a half-column and splat case and has a standard 30 hour movement, is mostly ORIGINAL and in good working order. Mark Leavenworth & Co Wooden Works Half Column & Splat Clock 30 Hour T&S Working Mark Leavenworth & Co Wooden Works Half Column & Splat Clock 30 Hour T&S Working Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN HALF-COLUMN & SPLAT CLOCK MARK LEAVENWORTH & CO 30 HOUR T&S (ON THE HOUR ONLY) CIRCA 1830s This is an antique wood works clock made by Mark Leavenworth & Co., which according to the literature, was the name he used from 1829 until 1834. It has a 30 hour movement, striking on the hour only. It uses his standard movement, 2A1.11 in Snowden Taylor's classification system. The upper glass appears to be original, and the lower is a modern replacement; some of his half column and splat clocks (which he called a "long bronsed" clock) had mirrors in the lower part of the door, while others had a reverse painted glass, typically similar to those used in pillar and scroll clocks and transitional clocks. Ths one retains a GREAT label. There are minor chips in the veneer actually I see only two, one at the lower right and the other at the lower left (see photos, as they are part of the description), but the original stenciling is excellent. If it has been refinished, it was long ago and they did a very professional job. Weights, dial, and hands are original. Note minor losses on the dial. It measures approximately 29.5 X 16.5 X 5 inches. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box at no extra charge. I date this clock to circa 1829-34. Chauncey Jerome designed this style case in the mid-1820s, reflecting the change in tastes from the Federal style (typified by the Pillar and Scroll clock, which was more expensive to produce) to the Empire style. I have been told that Leavenworth produced fewer of the half column and splat clocks than did many of his contemporaries. The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, and restrung. It is currently working, although I cannot guarantee it. I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in AS-IS condition. I have read that when produced, the wooden movements were estimated to have a "life expectancy" of about 20 years. That considered, it is amazing that so many of them are nearly 200 and still running! This clock, while not perfect, is exceptionally clean.Questions have been asked about the shipping cost of this clock. It is large, but depending on the carrier, I can ship it coast-to-coast for about $75. If you have concerns, contact me (thru eBay) with your Zip Code and I will give you a BINDING quote for shipping. The eBay shipping calculator that appears on listings is sometimes off, and does not reflect any shipping discount, which I pass on to the customer.
