Mark Leavenworth & Co Wooden Works Half Column & Splat Clock 30 Hour T&S Working Mark Leavenworth & Co Wooden Works Half Column & Splat Clock 30 Hour T&S Working Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN HALF-COLUMN & SPLAT CLOCK MARK LEAVENWORTH & CO 30 HOUR T&S (ON THE HOUR ONLY) CIRCA 1830s This is an antique wood works clock made by Mark Leavenworth & Co., which according to the literature, was the name he used from 1829 until 1834. It has a 30 hour movement, striking on the hour only. It uses his standard movement, 2A1.11 in Snowden Taylor's classification system. The upper glass appears to be original, and the lower is a modern replacement; some of his half column and splat clocks (which he called a "long bronsed" clock) had mirrors in the lower part of the door, while others had a reverse painted glass, typically similar to those used in pillar and scroll clocks and transitional clocks. Ths one retains a GREAT label. There are minor chips in the veneer actually I see only two, one at the lower right and the other at the lower left (see photos, as they are part of the description), but the original stenciling is excellent. If it has been refinished, it was long ago and they did a very professional job. Weights, dial, and hands are original. Note minor losses on the dial. It measures approximately 29.5 X 16.5 X 5 inches. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box at no extra charge. I date this clock to circa 1829-34. Chauncey Jerome designed this style case in the mid-1820s, reflecting the change in tastes from the Federal style (typified by the Pillar and Scroll clock, which was more expensive to produce) to the Empire style. I have been told that Leavenworth produced fewer of the half column and splat clocks than did many of his contemporaries. The movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, and restrung. It is currently working, although I cannot guarantee it. I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in AS-IS condition. I have read that when produced, the wooden movements were estimated to have a "life expectancy" of about 20 years. That considered, it is amazing that so many of them are nearly 200 and still running! This clock, while not perfect, is exceptionally clean.Questions have been asked about the shipping cost of this clock. It is large, but depending on the carrier, I can ship it coast-to-coast for about $75. If you have concerns, contact me (thru eBay) with your Zip Code and I will give you a BINDING quote for shipping.
