Ultra Rare Moon Phase Clock Mantle Clock by Johann Storch Circa 1750-1831

Sold on eBay October 15th, 2023

Ultra Rare Moon Phase Clock Mantle Clock by Johann Storch Circa 1750-1831

This rare clock cosmetically appears in great condition. Also called a night clock. It does run but then stops after about 30 seconds, probably needs cleaned or maybe a repair. The tag in the back says Johann Storch 1750, but the painting is dated 1831. The clock is 16' wide x 17" tall x 4.75" deep. I found a similar one that sold at auction for $10000.00. But I am willing to take offers. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful!

This is a superb antique 8 day wood works clock movement made by Eli Terry Jr. As far as I can tell, is mostly ORIGINAL. See photos and description for details. Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Ornately Carved Eli Terry Jr. Wooden Works 8 Day T&S Clock, Working, Beautiful! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN WOODEN WORKS CLOCK ELI TERRY JR. 8 DAY T&S (ON THE HOUR ONLY) CIRCA 1831 - 1839 This is an antique wood works clock made by Eli Terry Jr. I believe he began making the 8 day movement about 1832, and ended no later than 1839, though records show that existing stocks were sold as late as about 1841. It was difficult for wood movements to compete with brass movements! The movement is of course unsigned (none were signed that I know of) and the paper is entirely missing. However, it is a match for another 8 day Eli Terry Jr. clock I have, and the movement is the Terry Type 5.111 as pictured in Figure 133, page 54, of Eight Day Wood Movement Shelf Clocks by Bryan Rogers and Snowden Taylor. This clock has a beautiful carved case, with paw feet. It appears to have been refinished a few years ago, and they did an excellent job on it! A few small pieces of veneer are missing here and there--see photos, as they are part of the description. The upper glass may be original, but the mirror in the lower is a replacement. It looks to me as though everything else is original: hands (though they have been painted black), bob, pulleys, and weights. The clock measures about 39 X 18.75 X 5 inches, and is very clean. The key is period, though have seen not others exactly like it. Instead of a crank, the winding stem is through the center shaft of a wood handle. It is probably not original to this clock. I completely disassembled the movement, restrung, and cleaned and preserved it. It is currently working and striking nicely. I have to share that these 8 day wooden movement clocks have a reputation for being quite finicky. Please note also that (1) the heavy weights used on 8 day clocks put a lot of strain on the great wheel, and while this one is presently without condition issues, they can break teeth off; (2) I have read that when produced, the wooden movements were estimated to have a "life expectancy" of about 20 years. We are well beyond that now, by 160 and more years, and it is amazing that so many of them are still running! However, you might say they are living on borrowed time, so I cannot guarantee such a movement, especially after it goes through the post office or any other shipper. And (3) I sell all mechanical and electrical devices in AS-IS condition anyway, because parts can become brittle so that any disturbance affects it. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a second box, at no additional charge. If the eBay shipping calculator seems high, remember this is a large clock. Even so, their calculator is sometimes off, so feel free to contact me for a binding shipping price. Any overage, including shipping discount (if any) will be refunded. Eli & Samuel Terry Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs!

Eli & Samuel Terry Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs!

This is a Pillar and Scroll clock made by Eli (Jr.) and Samuel Terry, ca. 1825-1830. It is currently working . Eli & Samuel Terry Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs! Eli & Samuel Terry Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters ELI & SAMUEL TERRY PILLAR & SCROLL CLOCK ORIGINAL CASE, MOVEMENT, & MOST PARTS 30 HOUR T&S CIRCA 1825 - 1830 This is an antique "Pillar and Scroll" clock made by Eli (Jr.) and Samuel Terry, sons of Eli Terry Sr. Most sources date this partnership between 1825 and 1827, though a few say it extended to about 1831. The finials are wood rather than brass; a few years ago, I would have unequivocally said they are replacements, but I have since read that some P&S clocks originally had wood finials. Consequently, I am not sure. The two side finials match; while the center one is very close, it is not exactly the same shape as the others. I added the two side arms, left and right top. Everything else appears to be original though--the dial, hands (which have been painted black), the pendulum bob, and weights. Those weights have been restrung within a few years, and the cords appear to be good. The dial looks like a typical Terry dial, though it is now attached by wood screws rather than pins. It has two filled-in holes at its base; these appear to be where wood screws once attached it to the cross strip, but those holes were stripped. And eagle-eyed eBayer pointed out the initials "ST" in the upper center-right of the dial. This has been seen on other Samuel Terry clocks, whether it is his initial or an otherwise unknown dial painter who happened to have the same initials, I cannot say. The scroll is slightly warped backward, but not distractingly so. Perhaps the best thing about this clock it its ORIGINAL reverse painted lower glass! It does have some fairly minor losses, but is quite good actually--see photos. The movement appears to be the standard Terry movement, and I believe it to be original to this case. The tips of the upper scrolls are good, with NO repairs evident. The original lock is present, but does not appear to be functional; the escutcheon is missing. There are a few old veneer repairs--see photos, as they are part of the description. It has the more-or-less standard dimensions of a pillar and scroll clock, close to 30 X 16 X 4 inches. The label has darkened with age, but is mostly present. The clock is presently working nicely, with its 30 hour movement, striking only on the hour. Please note that these wooden movements were made with an expected 20 year lifespan, and it has now been nearly 200 years. They can be temperamental, and there is no way to predict when something will break. Consequently I think it will work upon receipt and proper set-up, but I cannot guarantee that. It has probably been refinished, some years ago I would say. It is really a nice-looking clock! I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "AS-IS" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. Even then, however, you still have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned or any reason--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Please ask questions and study the photos carefully, as they are part of the description. By the way, for safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly.
