Mathurin Moreau 29” tall French museum clock 1800s Louis Boname Seloncourt

Sold on eBay October 27th, 2023

Mathurin Moreau 29” tall French museum clock 1800s Louis Boname Seloncourt

eBay For auction is a truly rare spectacular clock, nearly three feet tall by the famous artist, MATHURIN "Math" MOREAU. The clock movement is by the famous French clock maker: LOUIS BONAME (BESANÇON) SELONCOURT. You can see the stamp on the clock in one of the photographs. The dial protected by original glass door windows Moreau s signature appears in at least two places, once on each ladies' dresses (photos). I purchased this clock from a collector in Prague around 20 years ago and have owned it ever since. There is also a plate on the front “M. Moreau”. This clock is entitled "TRIOMPHE L'AMOUR". It is truly spectacular and stands over 29" tall and is very heavy. The detail work is exquisite. The back of this clock is more decorative and detailed than most clocks fronts. The glass and porcelain face are in excellent condition. The clock works and chimes a lovely bell sound. When I purchased the clock I was told it had been featured in a well-known palace in Germany. Unfortunately, I've since forgotten its name. There is a stamp on the back of the clock that reads as best as I can tell “Hors Concours” which I understand to be an expression from the late 19th century meaning “unrivaled ” This museum caliber clock will be the centerpiece of any home, whether your home is the Trump Tower or a more humble abode. The clock is in excellent condition for a clock that is well over a hundred years old and never restored. A true collectors piece. The Moreau family sculptor dynasty begins with Jean Baptiste Moreau, who was born in Dijon, France at the end of the 18th century. Jean Baptiste had three sons who followed in his footsteps, they were Auguste, Mathurin and Hyppolyte François The legacy continued with Auguste’s sons, Louis Auguste and Hyppolyte Francois. Members of the Moreau family often studied at the famous École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.Mathurin received many awards and specialized more in large statues - like you find in a town square, and his work followed the academic style. Many of Mathurin’s sculptures can be found around Paris, including L’Océanie, which is located in the Musée d’Orsay courtyard. Mathurin also won first place at the Paris World Fair in 1855 for his Fontaine de Tourny, which is now located in Quebec.Mathurin Moreau was born at Côte-d’Or on November the 18th, 1822, the son of Jean Baptiste Moreau, who was also famous sculptor in Paris. Mathurin Moreau studied at the École des Beaux Arts from 1841 where he was a pupil of Ramey and Dumont. He won awards at the Paris Salon. In 1885 his achievement was recognized by his becoming an Officer of the Legion d’Honneur. In 1897, Mathurian received the medal of honor for the Monument of Joigneaux. Its interesting to note that Auguste Rodin, also a sculptor in Paris at this time (born in 1840 and died in 1917) never received any such awards during his lifetime. In fact, it wasn’t until the 50th anniversary of Rodin’s death, in 1967, that he was finally awarded with the public tribute to Preiss. Mathurian died five years before Rodin. Mathurian Moreau sculpted many famous public statues in bronze around Paris and Europe, including L'Océanie at the Musee D’Orsay, La Chapelle Montmartre Parmentier in Cologne, the Sénat et jardin du Luxembourg, and a larger than life size figure of Marguerite d’Anjou. The two fountains of the Tourny place in Bordeaux (1857) were decorated with four Moreau sculptures. One of them is on display at Clemenceau place with Soulac-on-Sea. Mathurin’s son, Louis Auguste Moreau also became a successful sculptor. Other famous works of Mathurin Moreau are the Elegy, the Fairy with the flowers, the Ropemaking machine, Prima Vera and the Monument of Joigneaux, for which he received the medal of honor. Mathurin Moreau becomes mayor of the XIXème district of Paris. After its death a street in the City of Paris was named after him (Rue de Mathurin Moreau). He was made mayor of the XIXe arrondissement, Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honor. His other works include. · Cologne, limestone, 1865, façade de la gare du Nord · Nymphe fluviale, the Place du The tre Français Paris (1874) · L'Océanie, from the Exposition Universelle (1878),Musée d'Orsay courtyard · Zenobe Gramme, bronze, Musée des Arts et Métiers courtyard, Paris · Monument de Joigneaux, for which he received the medal of honor, Salon of 1897 · Tomb of Zenobe Gramme, Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, circa 1901 · Lord Strathcona Fountain, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, unveiled 1 July 1909 SOLD AS IS. antique Alarm Banjo clock Joseph Dyar, Middlebury Vt. 1822

Sold on eBay October 10th, 2023

antique Alarm Banjo clock Joseph Dyar, Middlebury Vt. 1822

Selling a very rare Alarm Banjo clock made by Joseph Dyar Middlebury Vt. about 1825. Tablets are probably not original to the clock, but very nice. The name on the dial is light but readable Joseph Dyar Middlebury Vt. The outside lever on the alarm side looks to be a replacement but seems to be accurate for this movement. There are many weight driven banjo clocks but to get a Joseph Dyar with the alarm feature is very rare . I will ship the weight separately in order to protect the clock.I added some pictures of the movement, because a number of people wanted to see more details. hope this is able to help. also someone asked about a second weight for the alarm, both the alarm and the time is running off the same weight. hope this answers all the questions, if not please ask. I know it is an expensive clock.I want the winning bidder be happy with the clock. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

This 200-year-old clock has a hand painted face with the clockworks in a beautiful mahogany cabinet with kingwood inlays. The face is bracketed in the front by full columns with brass capitals and 3 brass finials at the cabinet top. Made by W. Nicholas of Birmingham England with the face painting done by Lawrence of Birmingham this piece dates to sometime between 1793 and 1822. This clock runs and chimes but has not been cleaned nor tuned since 2011. Overall, very good condition given its age, but the small dials (seconds and day of the week) are faded as is the Lawrence of Birmingham signature. The cabinet may have occasional small scratches and dents (see pictures). Antique Seth Thomas Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs!

This is a Seth Thomas Pillar and Scroll clock, ca. 1825-1830. It is currently working . Antique Seth Thomas Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs! Antique Seth Thomas Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters SETH THOMAS PILLAR & SCROLL CLOCK ORIGINAL CASE, MOVEMENT, & MOST PARTS 30 HOUR T&S CIRCA 1825 - 1830 This is an antique Seth Thomas "Pillar and Scroll" clock, made circa 1825-1830. The finials are reproductions, the numerals on the dial have been strengthened (good job of it), and the lower glass has been repainted in place (fair job, not great), but as far as I can tell, everything else is original! The movement appears to be the standard Seth Thomas movement, Snowdon Taylor's subtype 1.513, and I believe it to be original to this case. The tips of the upper scrolls are good, with NO repairs evident. The original lock is present, but does not appear to be functional; someone long ago added a knob to the door for opening and closing. The pendulum bob is original, as are the hands. A small amount of the wood on the hour arbor has been lost and a previous repairman added a brass washer and two small pins to stabilize the hand. One of the tips of the lower scroll, on the skirt, appears to have gotten broken and either repaired or replaced, but it is not very noticeable. There are various old veneer repairs--see photos, as they are part of the description. As stated in the condition report, I cleaned the movement, restrung the original weights, and of course reassembled it. It is presently working nicely. Please note however that these wooden movements were made with an expected 20 year lifespan, and it has now been nearly 200 years. They can be temperamental, and there is no way to predict when something will break. Consequently I think it will work upon receipt and proper set-up, but I cannot guarantee that. It has probably been refinished, some years ago I would say. It is really a nice-looking clock! Seth Thomas essentially copied Eli Terry's design under agreements they made in 1818 and 1822. However, Terry sued Thomas in 1826 and again in 1827. Some historians believe these lawsuits were really to dissuade others from copying Terry's designs, while others think that Terry was serious in the suits. Either way, the suits were settled later in 1827. Note that the label on this clock does not acknowledge Terry or his design, suggesting it was made prior to settling the lawsuit. I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "AS-IS" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. Even then, however, you still have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned or any reason--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Please ask questions and study the photos carefully, as they are part of the description. By the way, for safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly. NO RESERVE! MY PLEDGE TO YOU: no surprises! I will provide high-resolution scans; I will fully describe each item, obverse and reverse, positives and negatives, possibilities, likelihoods, what I suspect, and which is which; and I will provide as much historical context as I can. Birge, Mallory & Co. Triple Decker Clock, 8 Day T&S, Nice & Working, Ca. 1840

A very nice Birge, Mallory & Co. triple decker clock, currently working. Birge, Mallory & Co. Triple Decker Clock, 8 Day T&S, Nice & Working, Ca. 1840 Birge, Mallory & Co. Triple Decker Clock, 8 Day T&S, Nice & Working, Ca. 1840 Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters BIRGE, MALLORY & CO. CLOCK TRIPLE DECKER GLASS OF STREET TOWN SCENE 8 DAY T&S, WORKING CONDITION Ca. 1837 - 1843 THIS is a guaranteed genuine antique Birge, Mallory & Co. triple decker 8 day time & strike clock, circa 1837 - 1843. It is a weight clock, with an 8 day strap brass movement. John Birge, born 1785, fought in the war of 1812 and was originally a carriage maker. He went into the clock business with Titus Merriman as early as 1822, then with various others until about 1855. His partnership with Ransom Mallory was fairly short lived, only from 1837 until 1843. Consequently, clocks with that label can be dated within those 6 or 7 years. This clock has a typical strap brass movement, which has been cleaned and restrung (with brass cables) in the past few years. All I did was to lubricate it, and it is currently running and striking correctly. It strikes the hour only. The pendulum bob, weights, and even the key to the doors are original, while the glasses, hands, and winding crank have been replaced with reproductions. The case has been nicely refinished. The side "arm" on the top right appears to be a repl;acement. As the photos show, there are some paint losses on the face, but it does retain its original mirror which can be raised to show the movement. There are minor chips to the veneer, and some old repairs replacement to the veneer. The splat is not typical for triple deckers, but is not unknown either. I have found several in various sources with such splats, and since Birge & Mallory began making clocks at the end of the half column and splat era, it is entirely possible that it is original. It has "tin can" pulley covers. The clock is approximately 35 X 17 X 6 inches. For safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box. I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "as-is" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. If there is damage, this must be pursued through an insurance claim. After that is settled, assuming notification is made within the inspection period, the clock can be returned. Should you be disappointed with the clock, or simply change your mind, you have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned for any reason for a refund of the purchase price--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Because of the clock's size and weight, it will be fairly expansive to ship. However, sometimes eBay's shipping calculator is inaccurate, so feel free to contact me for a binding shipping cost. The calculator does not include shipping discounts (if any), but I pass those on to the customer. NO RESERVE! MY PLEDGE TO YOU: no surprises! I will provide high-resolution scans; I will fully describe each item, obverse and reverse, positives and negatives, possibilities, likelihoods, what I suspect, and which is which; and I will provide as much historical context as I can.
