NICE ANTIQUE FRIEDRICH MAUTHE GERMAN 8 DAY WESTMINSTER CHIME RED OAK WALL CLOCK!
SOLD $275.00 Sold: Mar 31, 2025 on eBayOriginal Listing Description
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our other items! This is a wonderful find of a rare, wood, 8 day Westminster Chime wall clock that was created about 75 years ago in Schwennigen, "Germany" by Friedrich "Mauthe." This is one of the highest quality clocks ever produced and frankly, were it not for the cause listed below, this clock would remain in our home. The case is made entirely of wood and finished in dark red oak; very nice! There is a formed and curvy glass crystal inset near the bottom allowing for easy viewing of the brass pendulum as it swings back and forth; no cracks or chips that I can see. The top is a beautiful scroll shape and there are wooden columns on either side of the dial with brass trim on the bottoms and fancy brass finials on the very top. The top of the case is actually a hinged wood frame door that is secured with a metal latch on the side. There is a convex glass crystal inset into the door; no cracks or chips here either. The door opens easily to allow access to the winding arbors on the dial, setting the correct time, and for hanging the brass pendulum. The metal dial has a brass outer bezel and a a goldtone backdrop featuring large, easy to read, black Roman numerals at the hour marks and matching fancy metal hands to point out the time. The name, "Mauthe" appears here on the upper dial in their familiar calligraphic logo script. The back of the clock is wood too and all hardware appears to be intact. The clock is equipped with a pendulum style, key wind movement bearing the Mauthe name and Germany point of origin. The clock operates very well for about 8 days on a single wind. This clock plays music too! At the quarter hour mark, the clock plays a beautiful, four-note melody on five golden metal chime bars inside the case; eight notes at the half hour mark, twelve at the 3/4 hour mark, and the full sixteen note melody at the top of each hour. The clock will then chime the current number of hours at the top of each hour, just like Big Ben in London! This is a magnificent clock to be sure and the ideal size too measuring about 16" high, about 5 1/4" deep, and about 13" at its widest point. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and the chimes are heavenly though keep in mind, this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classic timepiece like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with a brasstone metal pendulum and the winding key. I've looked the clock over fairly well and find less than average signs of wear. It is simply gorgeous and will certainly impress anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent German timepiece with a fabulous legacy.
