E. Howard & Co., Boston No. 3 weight driven banjo clock @ 1880 Original Rare!
SOLD $1,586.00 Sold: Jan 5, 2025 on eBayOriginal Listing Description
E. Howard & Company, Boston No. 3 weight driven banjo clock @ 1880. Case dimensions are: 38" tall x 15 3/4" wide x 4 3/4" deep. The rosewood grained cherry wood case is in good as found condition retaining its original color and finish. The finish is quite dark, but the original rosewood graining can be seen here and there - needs to be cleaned or refreshed to allow the rosewood graining to show through. Case is solid and good, but has had some holes added expediently on the throat frame over the years to screw it on tighter. Great original push button locking to the dial bezel and the lower box door. The bottom board looks to have been replaced at some point in the past, and has a non-displaced diagonal crack. All 3 glasses are original and excellent, with the throat and lower glasses having been professionally restored at some point in the frames - the original wooden glass retaining strips are undisturbed. The wooden weight baffle looks to have been on and off the case a few times, and has a piece missing at the top; also the pendulum tie-down is missing. Great original signed heavy zinc dial with excellent original dial paint measures 9 3/4" diameter. Excellent original hands. Great original weight. Outstanding original pendulum with extra fancy 4 1/2" diameter damascened bob. The 8 day time only weight driven movement is die stamped on the front plate, and is original to the case. Movement is excellent - relatively clean with original pulley and good cable, no damage or missing pieces, and running strong, keeping good time. When I purchased this clock from the estate, the 2 movement locating pins and weight stop in the case were missing, and the movement was rather loose, able to pivot from the original case mounting screw. I replaced the pins, and made a correct weight stop. Now the movement is secure in the case, and fits perfectly, lining up with the dial when the dial in engaged with its original case mounting pins. Unfortunately over the years there were some screw holes added in the head to attach the dial to the alignment of the loose movement. It now aligns with the original screw holes, and the later added ones could be filled, if desired. No reserve. UPS ground shipping in the continental USA will be $125.00. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
