Important and Classic Marianne Brandt Bauhaus Clock, All Original and Working
Important and Classic Marianne Brandt Bauhaus Clock, All Original and Working
SOLD $990.00 Sold: Jul 14, 2024 on eBayOriginal Listing Description
This is the third group of items I’m listing from my vintage clock and transistor radio collections. I’ll also be listing other vintage items as well. If you’re interested in any of the items in this batch, or similar ones, please check back regularly. You may find something you’d like to bid on. Up for grabs is an excellent example of one of the most famous designs to come out of the renowned Bauhaus school of art and design. The school operated from 1919 to 1933 and became legendary for its approach to design, which attempted to unify individual artistic vision and the principles of mass production, with an emphasis on function. The wonder of the Bauhaus has filled many books and certainly can’t be done justice in this description. This chromium plated black and white painted metal clock, model #4477, is a masterpiece of simplicity and clarity. It was designed by Marianne Brandt, one of the only women to be accepted into this man’s club, because she and her work were too important to be left out. On the square, black, beveled face of the clock, two oblong hands inch past a dozen simple, painted white bars to mark the time. The hands’ pivot point is a white circle that is perfectly echoed by a dark one just below it, which accepts the key to wind the clock. Most unusually, the clock face is not under a traditional glass cover but left unprotected. It’s the consummate example of an object that is a pure expression of its function. The clock, manufactured by Ruppelwerk GMBH in Germany, measures 6w (including the base) x 5h x 1.5d inches (Brandt designed another version that is slightly bigger and deeper). It has its original 8-day key wind mechanical movement (the key is included), along with a micro adjustment feature if it runs fast or slow. The clock still runs well. The condition is …well, we should all look so good when we’re 100. There are some areas that could most likely be polished, but I’m choosing to leave it as is. The hands have inevitably started to yellow from being exposed to the air and light. I suppose they could be repainted, but I’ve never been tempted to “freshen it up.” Please look closely at all the photos and feel free to message me with any questions. Also, the shipping's on me within the U.S. I will ship internationally if the buyer pays the shipping. I don’t charge for any extras like packing or “handling” costs. Thanks for looking. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
