Antique Forestville Manufacturing Co Gothic JC Brown Clock Works and Chimes
SOLD $811.34 Sold: Apr 26, 2024 on eBayOriginal Listing Description
This is an antique (1840's or 1850's) Gothic style steeple Forestville Manufacturing Co./JC Brown mantel/shelf clock that works and chimes. I believe it is rosewood but some of my research says it could be mahogany veneer. It has a ripple front design. It measures 19-1/2" tall, 10-1/4" wide and 4-1/2" deep. There is a very good article in Collector's Weekly dated April 16, 2010 about the clock maker, time frame produced (1830'3 to 1850's), and other historical data. This clock opens in front and has a stencil design on bottom panel as shown. I am not a clock expert, but it looks mostly original but is likely to have been repaired or refurbished. The back panel behind the clockworks has a large label giving instructions on using the clock and the following:BRASS CLOCKSSprings with equalized power, warranted not to by the Forestville Manufacturing Co.JC BrownBristol, ConnCan't locate a date, but we know the company only existed 1830ish to1855. Condition is what you might expect for a clock this old. There are several chips in the wood veneer, scratches, etc... and I tried to picture them. The front door knob has a partial crack. Clock face is Roman Numerals and has age spots, but still perfectly readable. I have had it working for two weeks and it does pretty well. Chimes on the hour. May need some adjustments from someone more well versed in clocks than I am. Key included, although I can't guarantee it is the original key. From my deceased spouse's clock collection. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
