Brown Forestville Ripple Cut Steeple Clock Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters J.C. BROWN FORESTVILLE CLOCK MANUFACTORY RIPPLE CUT STEEPLE CASE 8 DAY MOVEMENT, TIME & STRIKE, RUNNING Ca. 1847 - 1855 THIS is a guaranteed genuine antique "steeple" clock made by J.C. Brown when he operated as the Forestville Clock Manufactory. I believe "back in the day" they called these "sharp Gothic" clocks. Brown operated without partners from 1847 until (or perhaps through) 1855, at while time the business failed and he sold out to Welch. The cabinet does not appear to have been refinished, although it is possible; either way, the finish is good with minor scuffs and imperfections consistent with its age. As best I can tell, the scene in the lower panel is ORIGINAL, with a few losses (see photos). The movement is correctly marked Forestville (see photos), and appears to be original to the case. The dial is original, the hands are period but may or may not be original to this clock. The the original paper is good with very few losses--again see photos. The pendulum is an original one. I disassembled the movement, ultrasonically cleaned it, polished the pivots, reassembled, and lubricated it. It is presently running and striking nicely. Even so however, I sell all electrical and mechanical items AS-IS because things this old can easily get out of adjustment or even damaged in transit. This clock has been well cared for throughout its life! The case is approximately 20 X 10 X 4 inches. The wood for these ripple-front cases were cut on a specially made saw. Frankly, I find it hard to imagine how it was constructed, but someone, 150 plus years ago, figured it out. The saw was lost in a factory fire at some point. On some of these clocks, the door is also ripple-cut, but not on all, and not on this one. Please note: eBay's shipping calculator is sometimes correct, sometimes over, and sometimes under. Since it is a one-box shipment, I will honor the price eBay quotes, but remember, that may be too much! If you want a guaranteed quote, contact me with your Zip Code. You have an inspection period of 30 days during which the item can be returned for any reason for a refund of the purchase price only--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly. NO RESERVE! MY PLEDGE TO YOU: no surprises! I will provide high-resolution scans; I will fully describe each item, obverse and reverse, positives and negatives, possibilities, likelihoods, what I suspect, and which is which; and I will provide as much historical context as I can. Now, I believe that the only people who never make mistakes are those who never say or do anything, so consequently, there will be times I am wrong. There, you are covered by my guarantee. MY GUARANTEE TO YOU: I guarantee each item to be genuine as described. After you receive your purchase, you will have a 30 day inspection period; and if you are dissatisfied, simply return the item (in its original condition) for an immediate refund of your purchase price. Furthermore, if in the inspection period, you decide to send the item for expertizing, I will extend the period until its return from the expert of your choice. If it returns with an opinion of not genuine, or of being significantly different from how I describe it, I will also reimburse you for the expertizing fee. And the ONLY exception to my guarantee is that I am not responsible for mishandling by the mail system, and any damages incurred therein. That is what insurance is for, and it is automatic on this item.
