1941 HAMILTON Model 22 US Navy Ship Box Chronometer * Excellent * Running Strong

Sold on eBay March 6th, 2024 for $1,375.00
Up for sale is a WWII era (1941) Hamilton Model 22 Marine Box Chronometer housed in a mahogany wood chronometer box. The clock is mounted in a gravity leveled gimbal suspension ring. The clock has been fully tested and is in excellent working condition. The clock is currently keeping good time. This Hamilton Model 22 clock and box are very difficult to find in such excellent condition. The chronometer clock runs steadily with excellent balance amplitude and is currently keeping good time. The clock runs strong and continuously for approximately 63 hours after a full wind-up. These Hamilton U. S. Navy marine navigational chronometers were designated to be wound-up daily, at the same time every day, to maintain maximum timing accuracy, which is key to obtaining maximum navigational accuracy while at sea.The clock's time-set function has been carefully tested and it is working properly. The multiple clock features of the time-set mode safety protection set pin, the time-set pull out stem, and the manual setting of hands are each working very well. The clock winds smoothly, and the mainspring is strong and does not "slip" when winding. The watch dial is in good condition but has 2 small faint streaks on the white surface, and it has some of the typical compression rub marks on the extreme outside edges from contact with the bezel. These rub marks are hidden from view under the bezel rim. See close up photo of the exposed dial and hands. The clock is signed in 3 locations with matching US Naval Observatory issued serial number N 7635, which appears on the bottom and side of the brass clock case, and also on the face of the bezel. The 4 clock hands are clean, straight, and are properly aligned. See close up photo showing hands. The clock "Up Down" winding indicator mechanism and pointer hand are in fully working condition. The winding indicator range is marked for up to 56 hours of run-time, but the mainspring is strong and the clock runs continuously for a bit over 63 hours, which is quite good for one of these old Hamilton model 22 clocks. The clock crystal is clear and is in generally good condition, with a few light scratches which are difficult to see without close inspection. There are none of the common spider-web pattern "crazing" defects on this crystal. The clock movement is complete and appears to be in excellent condition. The movement is running strong and continuously (see hand movements between photos). The Brass Chronometer Case Tub is in good condition for its age, with some light scratches, wear and oxidation. (see photos)The gravity-leveled brass suspension Gimbal Ring, the brass ring-lock assembly, the screws and washers are all present and are in good used condition. All of the related parts function properly. The 3-tier mahogany wood inner box is in exceptional condition. The box wood has no readily evident defects or scratches. There are no splits, gouges or gaps in the wood. This is one of the nicer Hamilton 22 boxes that one is likely to see.The glass viewing plate is clear and is free of any cracks or chips. The polished latches and hinges are in very good cosmetic condition and are each working properly. There is a minor accumulation of oxidation on some parts of the polished surfaces. See photos.
