Rare Antique 1880s Fowler Clock Work Wind Up Shoo Fly Fan Fly Chaser Read WORKS
SOLD $689.00 Sold: Sep 27, 2023 on eBayOriginal Listing Description
eBay This listing is for an extremely rare working Antique 1880s Fowler Clock Work Wind Up “Shoo Fly” Victorian Fan Fly Chaser. It is an excellent piece for collectors of hard to find high quality antiques, display / decor / use, gifting, and more!Popular on tabletops and mercantile counters in the post civil war years, these ingenious wonders are rather hard to come by these days. This one is in great condition. It has its original paint, with very little wear for its age. It appears to be working as well. It is wound, and when the lever is moved, it still spins. It appears to spin a little quickly, but it works nonetheless. I am not sure if it has some limiter that is not slowing it, as I have not opened it up at all to avoid causing damage. It otherwise appears to function as intended. Fowler’s mechanical fan, commonly called a “shoo-fly fan,” was a popular brand of these wind-up devices. Patented in December of 1863 and improved in 1874, this model featured a removable key (original key is not present and therefore not included) that slides into the cast iron base to wind the internal mechanisms. When the lever is released the fan rod rotates. The breeze created is minimal, but the moving shadows of the cloth fins are enough to keep flies from alighting long (cloth fans not present and not included). This clockwork fly fan comes from a massive estate collection, and was extremely well cared for in a temperature controlled room. Please check back this weekend & next week for multiple other antique & unique clocks & clockwork items I will be listing!Thank you for your consideration, reasonable offers are always considered. Please see photos for details & measurements, comes as is. Fan blades / hardware and key not included as stated. With any clockwork piece, this one may require set up and/or adjustment after shipment, however rest assured it will be packaged with extreme care. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
