It has a nice Lyre shaped Pendulum & Westminster Chimes with a Glass Window at the center of the door. The Dial is nicely Gilded with Porcelain Roman Numerals & 3 separate Keyholes to wind the clock. It has Beautiful Lion Paw Feet with Faux Tortoise Inlays in an Ebonized Lacquer Finish Case. The Clock has its original Franz Hermle Movement with Hammer Rods & Chime Rods. Bardon Clichy Master Wall Clock Konigsberg Germany Seal 1923 Pendulum Battery
HistoryVery little made it thru the WWII attacks on Konigsberg, Germany. First the shelling from the Royal Air Force inn August of 1944 and then by Soviet shelling in April of 1945. This one of a kind, Master Bardon clock, with a Konigsberg Seewarte seal somehow survived. Whether it was sheltered in the underground German bunkers or in the partial remains of the Konigsberg Observatory it did survive. The Observatory, a semi-circular two story research and observation facility with a brick vault (considered a regional architectural monument) is related to the clock via the Seewarte engraving on the clock seal."Seewarte" loosely translates as Naval Observatory or Oceanic Observatory or it could also be referring to the Atlantic Meteor voyage which mapped the ocean floor with the first sonic equipment and included the Konigsberg area in 1925-1927. The seal on this clock is also engraved Conigsberg, as it was first spelled for a period following the locations inception in 1843 as a mere Prussian settlement called Twangste.A piece of history from a location rich in history. Hitler had envisioned Konigsberg as a museum for everything the Germans had found in Russia Following the end of WWII and the Potsdam Agreement, Konigsberg, Germany became part of the Soviet Union (now Russia) and has remained so ever since. The Soviet Union renamed Konigsberg to Koliningrad. Today Konigsberg is of world interest as a Russian held area that is separated from the rest of Russia by two NATO countries. The situation with Ukraine makes this Russian held area of interest. Russia is most likely where this clock was purchased.Otto Pratje worked at the Konigsberg University with his chief study the geology of sea beds and he participated in the Meteor Atlantic expedition 1925-1926 eminating from Konigsberg. In 1937 he was appointed to establish and direct marine geological section of the Deutshe Seewarte at Hamburg. Both seafaring ventures produced official topographic and administrative maps of Germanys waters. Many dead underwater volcano's rising 1000 ft high in the ocean were identified for the first time with their 1st generation sonar equipment.Clock MechanicsThis Bardon Master clock appears to be one of a kind. Back is marble. Hangs at 52-1/2" long and 12" wide and 7 " deep.This is a battery run master clock with pendulum. Most likely from the Observatory in Koliningrad Konigsberg per the Seewarte seal on the front. Clocks by Bardon, Brillie and Vaucanson all embody similar principles. The coil is in the base. Extremely rare. Made in Clichy, France. Located at Etablissments bardon at the Societe Anonyme de Construction Electrique et Mechanique during the production years 1920-1925. To provide a basis for precise measurements, the metric system and a German legal meter were instituted to define lengths. However, different materials expand differently when temperatures change, which limits the ability to make very precise measurements. In 1896 Charles-Edouard Guillaume succeeded in finding an alloy of nickel and steel that registered almost no change in length and volume as a result of temperature changes. A VERY FINE ART NOUVEAU DOMED ARCHITECTURAL TABLE CLOCKEdward F. Caldwell & Co., New York, circa early 20th century | an unsigned documented exampleItem # 307PQH13X An incredibly intricate Art Nouveau table clock from the renowned firm of Edward F. Caldwell, it is a brilliant architectural work that insinuates a domed cathedral of the Renaissance. This particular clock design is catalogued in the archival records of the Smithsonian Library and Archives (Large Portfolio 84, p. 5, # A025762). It features a cast bronze finial of opposing harpies rising from cornucopia that the Caldwell firm used in several of their designs (for example, as the central motif raising a pair of candelabra branches in # A25571, Smithsonian archives, see enclosed image) situated over a domed top with applied pierced bronze elements that are intricately chiseled and bright-engraved to create a complex endlessly swirling collection of fretwork surrounding ecclesiastical imagery of classical figures, putti and angels. The fretwork in the canted corners of the dome hint at the influence of orientalism in the design process while heroes battling fantastical creatures ride horses at each corner.Raising each of the four corners of the structure are two male and two female bacchanalia figures brilliantly executed in gilded bronze, the front two flanking the circular face of the clock, this dial with raised Roman numerals over a hammered ground, the same motif of swirling foliage flowing centrally and in the spandrels of the face. The clock is raised on a base of fish-scale cove moldings over four pomegranite bun feet.The clever entwining of motifs by the designer to create a new object that embodies the essence of Art Nouveau is evident throughout the form. The classical inspirations in the heavenly imagery of the dome juxtapose brilliantly the Naturalism in the lower body of the clock. It remains an incredibly elaborate and cherished example. The intimate couple are standing on a round green marble base, with a clock housed inside. The time shows on a nice porcelain dial, signed by Antony Bailly. The statue is made of bronze with beautiful patina from its age, signed by Louis Moreau. The complete clock stands 29" tall and the base is 11-1/2" in diameter. The movement is 8 day with half hour and hour striking. It's in good working order and complete with pendulum and winding key. Because of its size and weight, the statue and the marble base with clock will be shipped separately for their safety. The statue can be easily re-attached by 2 screw nuts.
