Bardon Clichy Master Wall Clock Konigsberg Germany Seal 1923 Pendulum Battery

Sold on eBay March 16th, 2024

Bardon Clichy Master Wall Clock Konigsberg Germany Seal 1923 Pendulum Battery

HistoryVery little made it thru the WWII attacks on Konigsberg, Germany. First the shelling from the Royal Air Force inn August of 1944 and then by Soviet shelling in April of 1945. This one of a kind, Master Bardon clock, with a Konigsberg Seewarte seal somehow survived. Whether it was sheltered in the underground German bunkers or in the partial remains of the Konigsberg Observatory it did survive. The Observatory, a semi-circular two story research and observation facility with a brick vault (considered a regional architectural monument) is related to the clock via the Seewarte engraving on the clock seal."Seewarte" loosely translates as Naval Observatory or Oceanic Observatory or it could also be referring to the Atlantic Meteor voyage which mapped the ocean floor with the first sonic equipment and included the Konigsberg area in 1925-1927. The seal on this clock is also engraved Conigsberg, as it was first spelled for a period following the locations inception in 1843 as a mere Prussian settlement called Twangste.A piece of history from a location rich in history. Hitler had envisioned Konigsberg as a museum for everything the Germans had found in Russia Following the end of WWII and the Potsdam Agreement, Konigsberg, Germany became part of the Soviet Union (now Russia) and has remained so ever since. The Soviet Union renamed Konigsberg to Koliningrad. Today Konigsberg is of world interest as a Russian held area that is separated from the rest of Russia by two NATO countries. The situation with Ukraine makes this Russian held area of interest. Russia is most likely where this clock was purchased.Otto Pratje worked at the Konigsberg University with his chief study the geology of sea beds and he participated in the Meteor Atlantic expedition 1925-1926 eminating from Konigsberg. In 1937 he was appointed to establish and direct marine geological section of the Deutshe Seewarte at Hamburg. Both seafaring ventures produced official topographic and administrative maps of Germanys waters. Many dead underwater volcano's rising 1000 ft high in the ocean were identified for the first time with their 1st generation sonar equipment.Clock MechanicsThis Bardon Master clock appears to be one of a kind. Back is marble. Hangs at 52-1/2" long and 12" wide and 7 " deep. This is a battery run master clock with pendulum. Most likely from the Observatory in Koliningrad Konigsberg per the Seewarte seal on the front. Clocks by Bardon, Brillie and Vaucanson all embody similar principles. The coil is in the base. Extremely rare. Made in Clichy, France. Located at Etablissments bardon at the Societe Anonyme de Construction Electrique et Mechanique during the production years 1920-1925. Bardon hanging battery electromagnetic clock with oak case Bardon, Clichy. Charles Edouard GuillaumeThe Nobel Prize in Physics 1920 Precise measurement plays an important role in science. To provide a basis for precise measurements, the metric system and a German legal meter were instituted to define lengths. However, different materials expand differently when temperatures change, which limits the ability to make very precise measurements. In 1896 Charles-Edouard Guillaume succeeded in finding an alloy of nickel and steel that registered almost no change in length and volume as a result of temperature changes. The invar nickel-steel alloy had a significant effect on scientific instruments and incandescent light bulbs and was used in this clock. If you need this item shipped, that would be undertaken on your end. Your shipper would need to pack item and pick it up. If you are willing to make those arrangements it is an option for shipping. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

It has an 8 day time and strike spring driven brass movement with perpetual calendar. The clock case is made of walnut with ebonized turned columns, spandrels and carved crests. It has nickel plated dial surrounds, bell, pendulum rod and crescent calendar hand. The black time dial is 4" and the 31 day glass calendar dial is 7" in diameter, respectively. Purely American Made.Franklin "Frank" Herschede was born on July 30, 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio.In 1873, at the age of 16, he began working as an apprentice watch and clock repairman for Charles Cook.In 1877, he went into business for himself and moved to Vine and 5th Street in Cincinnati. He diversified into jewelry, watches, diamonds, etc., and in 1885, the store moved to larger quarters at the corner of Arcade and Vine.In 1885, noting the success of Walter H. Durfee, Herschede began importing movements and having cases made in a nearby cabinet shop on Front Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. Frank’s clock business expanded to the point that he purchased the cabinet shop in 1900.In 1901, Frank exhibited in the South Carolina and West Indian Exposition at Charleston, South Carolina, where he received a gold medal for his hall clocks. This was the first of several medals earned by the firm.Frank's son, Walter, graduated from high school in 1902, and began work in the cabinet shop. On December 29, 1902 the Herschede Hall Clock Company was incorporated. In that same year, Herschede began to produce his own tubes and install them in his clocks. In 1903 the Herschede Hall Clock Company factory moved from Front Street to 1011-1015 Plum Street. In 1904 the Herschede Hall Clock Company won several medals in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904: a gold medal for the best hall clock, a gold medal for the best hall clock cases, and a silver medal for tubular chimes. In 1909, the Herschede Hall Clock Company leased the building next door at 1007-1009 Plum Street to manufacture clock movements. The first movement passed final inspection on January 10, 1911. In 1913, a third melody, “Canterbury Chimes” was added to the Whittington and Westminster chimes. The tune was composed by Charles Eisen, "a gifted American pianist," especially for Herschede. (If you have a Herschede clock with this tune and are a musician, we'd appreciate having the tune so we can add it to our clock chime tunes page in this reference library... contact us and let's talk about how to make this happen... thanks in advance. We'd also like to have a digital recording of this tune.)At the Panama-Pacific International Exposition the firm won two additional major awards: grand prize was presented to the Herschede Hall Clock Company for chime hall clocks and mantel clocks, and a gold medal was awarded for the hall clock cabinets manufactured by the company.By the early 1920's the Herschede Hall Clock Company had opened branch sales offices in New York City, then in Chicago and San Francisco. Frank Herschede died on September 15, 1922, and Walter was named president in January of 1923.In 1925, Walter began to work with Mr. Warren to develop electric movement chime clocks. By April of 1926, the Revere Clock Company came into being.By 1927 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had added a pair of smaller lines of clocks, including a clock (about 6’ in height) and a “petite” clock (generally under 7’ in height). These were produced in the same styles as the larger hall clocks.By 1929 the Herschede Hall Clock Company had some 300 employees, but the Great Depression caused a significant reduction in demand for hall clocks (and just about everything else except jobs)!By 1933 the Herschede Hall Clock Company changed its primary focus on the lower end, introducing an inexpensive line of electric clocks called “Crown Clocks”.On February 4, 1934, Walter's son, Richard Herschede, began working fulltime with his father. The Herschede Hall Clock Company ceased clockmaking during WWII, focusing its manufacturing expertise on observational instruments and optical components for the military. Subsequent to the war, clockmaking resumed, but never regained its pre-war momentum. Eventually, the firm branched out into, of all things, the manufacture of parking meters! In 1952 the Herschede Hall Clock Company began using imported Junghans movements in its non-tubular bell clocks. Then, in 1959, in the midst of extreme economic difficulties, the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association lured the Herschede Hall Clock Company to move its plant to Starkville, Mississippi, with the new factory opening in May of 1960.In 1973, the Herschede Hall Clock Company merged with Howard Furniture and Briarwood Lamps to become Arnold Industries, Inc.On September 23, 1983, Herschede announced a plan to restructure the Herschede Hall Clock division from a manufacturer of the finished clocks to a supplier of quality tubular bell movements to the industry. The firm briefly resumed production of clocks in 1989, making approximately 20 clocks between that year and 1992 under the ownership of Howard W. Klein and Robert Eggering of St. Louis, MO. The firm was then sold to R&M Imports of Waynesville, OH, which manufacturers replacement parts for existing Herschede clocks CONDITIONGood antique condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, light scuffing / marking, working DIMENSIONS24 x 18.5" d x 86" hPAYMENTThe sooner you pay, the sooner you get your item. The Designers Consignment insists on receiving payment within 3 days of your winning bid or Purchase, otherwise we reserve the right to make a second chance offer to the second place bidder or re-list the item. Please let us know if you have any additional questions SHIPPING & HANDLINGWe are currently unable to ship to international US locations. Antique Wall Clock 17" Boston Chelsea Movement AS IS Brass Wood PARTS OR RESTORE

Sold on eBay May 19th, 2024

Antique Wall Clock 17" Boston Chelsea Movement AS IS Brass Wood PARTS OR RESTORE

You're bidding on an antique wall clock - 17 1/4" max diameter, 12 1/2" face diameter, about 4 1/2" depth - heavy wood case, solid brass face with bronze hands and numerals, & nickel plated face. Clock is marked on the front, "Smith, Patterson Company - Boston". Movement is marked as manufactured by Chelsea Clock Co., Boston, MA.NOTE - clock is NOT in working condition - it appears to be overwound, and may have other mechanical issues - I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a clock expert - although note that the works look very clean and bright in appearance - SOLD AS IS AS FOUND. Smith Patterson & Co. was basically the Tiffany & Co. of Boston in the late 19th-early 20th century - particularly known for high quality jewelry, watches & clocks. Chelsea Clock Company was founded in 1897 and still operates today - at the time, their reputation for quality was peerless, solidified by a contract with the U.S. Navy for ship clocks. Note some scratch/wear to the face, but still a great looking piece, with heavy wood housing, and nice decorative bronze hands and numbers. Winding key is present, but note the speed adjustment key is not. Screws are all still present but note, one screw is loose due to the hole being stripped. Some specks of white paint splatter from the clock apparently being painted around in the past. Definitely worth repair restoration The Chelsea movement is worth the price of admission itself for parts. Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking! On May-13-24 at 12:44:19 PDT, seller added the following - serial number on the movement is 72272 (Condition: Pre-Owned)

Early #9623 Atmos Clock Model Cal. Series II , Excellent Condition GRO

Sold on eBay September 5th, 2024

Early #9623 Atmos Clock Model Cal. Series II , Excellent Condition GRO

This is a beautiful Atmos clock, made and sold by Jaeger Le Coultre, a well known Swiss company. It is in excellent condition for it's age, both cosmetically and mechanically. It is in good running order and keeping time. It is an unusual 2 tone design. This one, I believe, is a Calibre Series II. It is running beautifully and keeping excellent time.I've had mixed opinions from Atmos enthusiasts about the nickel/chrome plating, on it's originality. I don't have a reason to think it is not. I decided to sell it as a custom case. So consider that when bidding. It's a beautiful clock, runs great and looks great. It will be sold as described. It is the best running Atmos I have owned. After some inquiries about the date and further research, the clock likely dates from the second quarter 1942. SN 9623 and has chrome trim. Some questions have come up about locking the pendulum. On the Series two, or least this one, the pendulum lock operates in reverse of how the later clocks work. When the locking lever is to the left, when looking at the front of the clock, the pendulum is locked. When running, the lever is moved to the right. The bellows are good. It is one of the best running Atmos I have the pleasure of owning The name infers that it runs on the atmospheric pressure changes. It in fact runs on temperature changes. It winds with as little as a 2 degree change in temperature. This is accomplished by an ingenious set of bellows, filled with a gas compound that is very volatile at normal room temperature and causes the bellows to expand and contract with a small temperature change. This expansion and contraction though a small chain, pulleys and a ratchet system winds the mainspring, which powers the clock. These are sometimes called perpetual motion clocks, because they do not require winding. It's a misnomer, but effective marketing. This clock was made by Jaegar Le Coultre, a famous swiss firm, who continues to make these clocks today.
