O-Scale Brass Hillcrest Lumber No. 10 Climax Three-Truck Locomotive
Brass O-Scale Hillcrest Lumber No. 10 Three-Truck Climax Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills in Korea and imported by the legendary Precision Scale Co. A beautifully crafted scale model of the final run of these geared-truck Climax locomotives. This 70-ton prototype (No. 10) was made for the Hillcrest Lumber Company Ltd. in March 1928, Shop No. 1693 and was initially numbered 3, in standard gauge. It was also the last one made for sale on the North American continent and the last year for the Climax Company. By 1961 this Climax (No. 10) was the last operating Climax locomotive in North America! These interesting locomotives were manufactured from 1888 to 1928 for a total of only 1035 produced but were sold world-wide for use in the lumber and industrial mining areas. The geared design was very effective in the woods where steep grades, tight curves and poor trackage conditions prevailed. The Climax company, founded initially by George Yost, began production of based on designs by Charles Scott, improved by George Gilbert but with shaky financial success. The company was reorganized and then owned and managed by Rush S. Battles who is credited with driving the Climax Manufacturing Company forward successfully. The Climax design was very similar to earlier steam-powered mechanical products made for the oil field business such as pumps. Initially the first Climax design (Class A) used vertical cylinders over a center drive shaft through a gear box that proved to be workable but with several mechanical and maintenance issues. The design was reworked, and the first modern Class B Climax was produced in 1893 – with inclined cylinders (22.5 degrees) on either side of a standard designed locomotive boiler. This fine reproduction exhibits all of the careful detailing expected including accurate steel frame details with wooden bumpers, Walschaerts valve gear and related cylinder details including steam supply and exhaust distribution lines and fittings, connecting crank fittings, steam air compressor with related valves and lines, the steel all-weather cab with fully detailed boiler backhead controls, fuel oil bunker with fill lid and vent line in place with sand boxes on the rear and the water tank tender is complete including water pump and sand boxes at the rear with fill caps in place – everything ready to begin operations in the field. This model has been beautifully weathered and thoughtfully detailed with tools, oil cans, misc. parts on pilot around and the tool-box on top of the tender to enhance and show-off all aspects of this wonderful locomotive Everything from the boiler finish with streaks of residue from rain, steam and grime, cast steel trucks counter weighted with pinon gears coated in grease, brake shoes, air brake cylinder and hangers plus air lines, steam generator with steam exhaust line, accurate steel girder frame details with dirt and grime, boiler domes with pressure relief valves, spark-arrestor smoke stack, steam whistle even with pull cord in place, brass bell and steel boiler jacket are all weathered carefully – all of this major effort creates a model that really recreates what this locomotive might have looked like when in use. The new hardcover book “The Climax Locomotive” by Dennis Thompson, Richard Dunn and Steve Hauff, published in 2002 by Oso Publishing Company will also be included with this exceptional model. I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which was purchased new, has been in our collection for over twenty years mostly spent in its box awaiting its turn to be painted, weathered and detailed by an artist much in demand and who has really created an art-form. The time required between acceptance of the model to be painted and completion is between 1-3 years minimum. It is now being offered for sale so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway equipment from geared locomotives. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this rare and beautifully detailed and weathered Hillcrest Lumber No. 10. This fine model will be shipped without its original box (still searching for it and will forward to new owner when located) – double boxed, at buyer's expense and we recommend shipping via USPS Priority Mail insured. Precision Scale O-Scale Brass C&O Allegheny H-8 Locomotive
Brass O-Scale Chesapeake & Ohio H-8 Allegheny (2-6-6-6) Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills thirty years ago when things were really carefully made; from D & D Mfg Company in Korea and imported by the legendary Precision Scale Co., Crown Series. A beautifully crafted scale model of the final run of these massive locomotives with road number 1659 – the last prototype delivered in the series made by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio. The order was placed in 1947 and was delivered in December 1948. The Chesapeake & Ohio railroad, always a leader in articulated designs, bought this massive late steam-era locomotive to pull an entire train from Russell through Columbus to the Port of Toledo without changing locomotives in Columbus. The culmination of the “H” class (encompassing all of C&O’s articulated designs), the H-8 was the largest, heaviest, most powerful and most flexible in their uses whether hauling coal, freight or passenger consists. The incorporation of new steam technologies including super-heated steam, automatic stokers and locating the firebox behind the last drivers enabled the design of ever larger and more powerful locomotives. Adding the third axel to the trailing truck with larger rear wheel (43” diameter with first two at 36” diameter to create space for a booster engine) allowed for a much larger firebox plus the addition of over-fire jets improved combustion of the late run H-8s (road numbers 1645-1659). The prototype for this reproduction of #1659 was purchased in 1948, weighted a massive 1.183M pounds with tender and cost $395,000. C&O actually won a large settlement from Lima due to over-weight issues. This magnificent locomotive produced 7,498 draw-bar horsepower and regularly moved 14K tons at 45 MPH!This exceptional example is factory painted brass exhibiting many superb details and careful construction techniques including steel plate seams and boiler sheathing texture, rivets, steam and air-line detailing, casting marks, steps, railing lights, lubricators, reversing gear, Worthington cold water pump, injectors, air compressors and compressed air tanks (3), hard rockers, feed water pumps and other elements so important in great modeling. Great detail is evident in the running gear too – including the drivers with accurate spokes and counterweight outer surface, connecting rods including main, primary side rods and forward rods plus reversing gear, automatic lubricating rods are all shown in detail. Worthington open type feed water heater, near the smoke box, using exhaust steam could return about 14% of the water used from the tender. The prototype tender’s capacity was 25 tons of coal and 25,000 gals of water. This fine reproduction is well detailed including the three and four axel Buckeye trucks with clear suspension details shown, automatic stoker, reversing and running lights, electrical conduits, crisp rivets, ladders and hand rails, water tank covers (operating on this model), auger details in coal bunker with vertical support plates inside, accurate inspection access coal doors (operating on this model) from cab area including light inside the bunker, tool boxes and hangers for re-railers, water lines and steam lines. Only two prototype examples of this fine locomotive remain (at the Ford Museum and in Baltimore, MD) so to acquire such a fine example of this exceptional late-steam era locomotive is rare. This great looking design also used 67” diameter drivers providing for improved traction needed hauling loads up steep grades through the Appalachians. A powerful locomotive that hauled both coal and manifest freight and was also fast enough to occasionally be used in passenger service especially during WWII with extended troop movements.I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which has been in our collection for over thirty years and was finally opened (purchased new 17 MAR 92) and put on display about a year ago, is being offered so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway lines from the C&O. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this rare H-8 from Precision Scale. This fine model will be shipped in its original box with original packing materials, double boxed, at buyer's expense and we recommend shipping via UPS or USPS Priority Mail insured. O-Scale Brass D&RGW K-36 Narrow-Gauge Locomotive
eBay Brass O-Scale Denver & Rio Grande Western K-36 No. 484 (2-8-2) Narrow-gauge Locomotive – This is an exceptional example of the model builder’s skills thirty years ago when things were really carefully made; from Samhongsa in Korea and imported by the legendary Precision Scale Co., Crown Series. A beautifully crafted scale model of the renowned D&RGW narrow gauge ‘Mikado’ type locomotive that continues to inspire railroad enthusiasts everywhere – restored in 1983 and still in use running excursion trips on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in portions of the Colorado/New Mexico area today. “K” designates Mikado-type and “36” denotes 36K pounds of tractive effort. This exacting reproduction model is in On3 gauge, #16219 and is in new condition throughout. No. 484 was originally built in 1925 by Baldwin Locomotive Works and weighted-in at 286k pounds, fully loaded, with tender capacity of 9.5 tons of coal and 5,000 gals of water and with a tractive power of 36,200 pounds. The most revenue came in hauling ore including coal, freight, some livestock and, of course, lumber. The railroad development in the Rockies was advanced through the vision of General William Jackson Palmer (who was a calvary officer in the Civil War and was advanced to Brigadier General by age 20) who not only created the D&RGW railroad, incorporated in October, 1870, but also the city of Colorado Springs. As an accomplished railroad construction engineer, he surveyed, designed the routes and supervised construction of his railroad. The three-foot gauge was selected due to costs, availability of materials, reduction in physical construction requirements and the formidable terrain being traversed through the mountains, across rivers and ravines. The narrow gauge allowed for smaller roadbeds, lighter track, tighter turning radiuses and faster construction – all very necessary to developing a much-needed revenue stream quickly. This reproduction is faithful to the original engine in every way and displays exquisite detailing throughout. A truly beautiful locomotive to see and unusual with the exterior mounted frame placing the drivers inside the frame with counter weights for the drivers and with connecting rods including main, primary and secondary rods, reversing gear on the outside of the steel frame plus automatic lubricator rods, air compressor, air lines and valves, compressed air tanks, steam lines and fittings – all presented in great detail and beautifully visible thanks to the superb painting, weathering and detailing of this unique model. Notice the fading of the paint, steam and water marks, grease, dirt and grime – all wonderfully painted on this exceptional model. The interior of the cab is fully detailed and painted showing all boiler backhead valves, lines, levers, seats with arm rests and apron on full display. All rivets, boiler sheeting and hold-down straps, sand and steam domes (with pressure release valves) and distribution lines, steam whistle and bell including pull cords and steam generator clearly exhibited along, with lights, marker boards, number boards, builder’s plate, toolboxes, handrails, steps and ladders – all finished beautifully that brings out every detail of this wonderful locomotive reproduction. The tender is equally well detailed including swing chains for each truck frame, re-railers air and steam lines, water connection from tender to injectors, coal bunker (filled with coal) and with inspection access doors from cab apron plus water bunker with water-fill pipe with lid and hold-downs, brakeman’s shanty and related electrical lines on full display. Offered along with this unique model are two hardcover books: “Rio Grande Narrow Gauge” and ‘Rio Grande Narrow Gauge both by author John B. Norwood; published by Heimburger House Publishing in 1983 and 1986; both first editions, complete with book jacket covers. I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing, one-of-a-kind model, which we purchased new, has been in our collection since 1992 and has been painted, weathered and detailed by an acclaimed model train artist high in demand – a new art-form really. His work is in such demand that the average wait time between his accepting the model for painting and completion is from 1-3 years. It was brought home, kept in it’s factory box until put on display about four years ago (never run) and is now being offered for sale so that we might expand our collection into other areas of brass locomotive types – mainly different railway equipment from narrow gauge locomotives. This exceptional reproduction deserves to be placed in a glass case and admired. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this rare, beautifully detailed and weathered D&RGW narrow gauge K-36 locomotive. This fine model will be shipped in its original box with original packing materials including the snow-plow attachment shipped originally with this beautiful model, double boxed, at buyer's expense – we recommend shipping via UPS or USPS Priority Mail insured. O-Scale Brass Pacific Coast Shay
Brass O-Scale Pickering Lumber No. 11 Three-Truck Shay Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills years ago when things were really carefully made and where attention to details counted; from the famous Samhongsa Company in Korea and imported by Sunset Models. A beautifully crafted non-working (requires a belt) scale model of the last major type of Shay locomotive, the Pacific Coast Shay. Many of these geared locomotives were made by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, after obtaining the original design and permission from Ephraim Shay himself. Shay came up with this idea after noticing that the wooden track used in the forested areas of Michigan was not damaged by the rail cars carrying logs even though they were much heavier than the locomotives pulling the cars. He surmised that smaller wheels (36” diameter) was the difference and his design employed the same size wheel as the flat cars used. This geared design was also introduced in The Transportation Exhibits in the World Columbian Exposition of 1893.Pickering Lumber dates to before 1902 when Standard Lumber Company was started which then morphed into Pickering in 1921 remaining in business until the depression of 1930. It was then reincarnated in 1937 and in 1941 purchased their only Pacific Coast Shay from Forest Lumber in Oregon which became the famous No. 11 Shay which was actually built by Lima in January 1929. In logging practice, the locomotive was run uphill facing forward with empty flat cars behind and then, once loaded, was backed down the hill which guaranteed adequate water over the crown sheet. The standard gauge, three-truck, three-cylinder design was very popular providing increased cylinder size (from older models) with greater pulling capacity (38,200 lbs. of tractive power on 12-36” diameter wheels or 25% more), greater weight (181,000 lbs.), smaller turning radius allowing for sharper curves in trackage and with more fuel/water capacity for longer operating periods in the field. These were also used for switching and in industrial areas to move rail cars around. This fine reproduction exhibits all of the careful detailing expected including accurate steel frame details with wooden bumpers, cylinder details including steam supply and exhaust distribution lines and fittings, connecting crank fittings, steam air compressor with related valves and lines, the steel all-weather cab with fully detailed boiler backhead controls, fuel oil bunker with fill lid and vent line in place and the water tank/tender is complete with water hose shown at the ready to put out any grass fires which the locomotive might have accidently set while operating in the field. This model has been beautifully weathered and thoughtfully detailed to enhance and show-off all of the aspects of this wonderful locomotive. Everything from the boiler finish with streaks of residue from rain, steam and grime, cast steel trucks with pinon gears coated in grease, brake shoes, hangers and air lines covered, accurate steel girder frame details with dirt and grime, boiler domes, steam whistle even with pull cord in place, steam generator, brass bell and boiler jacket are all weathered carefully – all of this major effort creates a model that really recreates what this locomotive might have looked like when in use. Engineer and fireman included for scale purposes. The hardcover book “Pacific Coast Shay – Strong Man of the Woods” by Dan Ranger, Jr., published in 1964 by Pacific Railroad Publications will also be included with this exceptional model. I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which was purchased used, has been in our collection for over twenty years awaiting its turn to be painted, weathered and detailed by an artist much in demand. It was brought home about 18 months ago and put on display then and is now being offered for sale so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway equipment from geared locomotives. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this rare and beautifully detailed and weathered Pacific Coast Shay No. 11. Precision Scale On3 Mich/Cal 16T Shay Locomotive
Brass O-Scale Michigan – California Lumber Company No. 2 Two-truck Shay Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills years ago when things were really carefully made and where attention to details counted. An example of legendary Japanese quality, this beautifully crafted scale model of one of the most interesting and famous of all Shay locomotives ever made – it is the oldest surviving Tee-boiler Shay now existing. From Micro Cast/Mizuno of Japan for the highly prized Precision Scale Company, serial number 01026. A beautifully crafted in great condition, scale model of possibly the last surviving Tee boiler Shay locomotive. This geared design was also introduced in The Transportation Exhibits in the World Columbian Exposition of 1893.This model is based upon the first engineering redesign from the original patents and were first introduced in 1883-1884 – this older design lasted 23 years until dropped from Lima’s catalogue when the whole line of Shay’s was recast. The Tee-boiler was used on smaller engines ranging from 10 to 20 tons. This engine was originally sold to a Michigan company but was subsequently sold and shipped to California for use on the “Mich-Cal” logging operations active there Michigan California Lumber of Company of Camino, California, formed in 1918 from the failed El Dorado Lumber which morphed into the C. D. Danaher Lumber Company in 1911 and then Mich-Cal, used this locomotive on the Georgetown Divide operations and ended up as a switcher at their mill operations during the 1950’s. It is still there behind their offices today. This compact Shay was made in 1884, construction number 122, for three-foot gauge track and converted to oil from wood in about 1905. This number 2 was used for switching needs after the larger No. 7 Shay arrived in 1904. In logging practice, these locomotives were sometimes, depending upon grades, run uphill facing forward with empty flat cars behind and then, once loaded, was backed down the hill which guaranteed adequate water over the crown sheet. There were grades of 7% on this line. The three-foot gauge, two-truck, two-cylinder design provided a very compact power-plant with 26” drivers, 13,000 lbs. tractive power at 23 tons weight plus a smaller turning radius allowing for sharper curves in trackage and with reasonable fuel/water capacity for reasonable operating periods in the field. These small Shays were also used for switching and in industrial areas to move rail cars around – sometimes converted to standard gauge for industrial uses. This fine reproduction exhibits all of the careful detailing expected including accurate steel frame details with wooden bumpers, cylinder details including steam supply and exhaust distribution lines and fittings, connecting crank fittings, steam air compressor with related valves and lines, the cab with fully detailed boiler backhead controls, fuel oil bunker with fill lid and vent line in place with the water tank beneath is complete including sand box at the rear with fill caps in place – love the off-set headlight. The original paperwork from Iron Horse Models is included which contains much detailed information about this locomotive including drawings and a photo of the actual locomotive with original warranty information. Over the years the brass finish has developed a beautiful patina which enhances the fine details on this model.I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which was purchased through a dealer from another owner, has been in our collection for over five years. It was brought home about 1 month ago and has not left its box except for photography purposes. It is now being offered for sale so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway equipment from geared locomotives. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this opportunity to acquire a rare and beautiful Mich-Cal Shay No. 2.
