O-Scale Brass Hillcrest Lumber No. 10 Climax Three-Truck Locomotive

Brass O-Scale Hillcrest Lumber No. 10 Three-Truck Climax Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills in Korea and imported by the legendary Precision Scale Co. A beautifully crafted scale model of the final run of these geared-truck Climax locomotives. This 70-ton prototype (No. 10) was made for the Hillcrest Lumber Company Ltd. in March 1928, Shop No. 1693 and was initially numbered 3, in standard gauge. It was also the last one made for sale on the North American continent and the last year for the Climax Company. By 1961 this Climax (No. 10) was the last operating Climax locomotive in North America! These interesting locomotives were manufactured from 1888 to 1928 for a total of only 1035 produced but were sold world-wide for use in the lumber and industrial mining areas. The geared design was very effective in the woods where steep grades, tight curves and poor trackage conditions prevailed. The Climax company, founded initially by George Yost, began production of based on designs by Charles Scott, improved by George Gilbert but with shaky financial success. The company was reorganized and then owned and managed by Rush S. Battles who is credited with driving the Climax Manufacturing Company forward successfully. The Climax design was very similar to earlier steam-powered mechanical products made for the oil field business such as pumps. Initially the first Climax design (Class A) used vertical cylinders over a center drive shaft through a gear box that proved to be workable but with several mechanical and maintenance issues. The design was reworked, and the first modern Class B Climax was produced in 1893 – with inclined cylinders (22.5 degrees) on either side of a standard designed locomotive boiler. This fine reproduction exhibits all of the careful detailing expected including accurate steel frame details with wooden bumpers, Walschaerts valve gear and related cylinder details including steam supply and exhaust distribution lines and fittings, connecting crank fittings, steam air compressor with related valves and lines, the steel all-weather cab with fully detailed boiler backhead controls, fuel oil bunker with fill lid and vent line in place with sand boxes on the rear and the water tank tender is complete including water pump and sand boxes at the rear with fill caps in place – everything ready to begin operations in the field. This model has been beautifully weathered and thoughtfully detailed with tools, oil cans, misc. parts on pilot around and the tool-box on top of the tender to enhance and show-off all aspects of this wonderful locomotive Everything from the boiler finish with streaks of residue from rain, steam and grime, cast steel trucks counter weighted with pinon gears coated in grease, brake shoes, air brake cylinder and hangers plus air lines, steam generator with steam exhaust line, accurate steel girder frame details with dirt and grime, boiler domes with pressure relief valves, spark-arrestor smoke stack, steam whistle even with pull cord in place, brass bell and steel boiler jacket are all weathered carefully – all of this major effort creates a model that really recreates what this locomotive might have looked like when in use. The new hardcover book “The Climax Locomotive” by Dennis Thompson, Richard Dunn and Steve Hauff, published in 2002 by Oso Publishing Company will also be included with this exceptional model. I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which was purchased new, has been in our collection for over twenty years mostly spent in its box awaiting its turn to be painted, weathered and detailed by an artist much in demand and who has really created an art-form. The time required between acceptance of the model to be painted and completion is between 1-3 years minimum. It is now being offered for sale so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway equipment from geared locomotives. Antique Winterhalder & Hofmeier Small Desk Clock Westminster Chimes w/ Balance Wheel Movement Runs, Strikes and Chimes Item Description Here is a great unique Winterhalder & Hofmeier Bracket Clock with Wood Case and Beveled Glass in running condition for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!Very unique, uncommon, and rare clock example here from Winterhalder & Hofmeier. First the size, this clock is only 8.75" tall, Secondly, this is a balance wheel movement, have never seen a W&H clock that was not powered by a pendulum.This fine antique mantel clock is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a high end auction house or clock shop. We have been selling clocks out of our home for over 35 years. We are therefore better positioned to control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the high end auction houses and clock shops experience. The clock dates to the 1910 period from what we have researched online. The diminutive size would have it fall into the category of a desk clock. There is another one now online that does not have the Westminster Chimes unit that is up for $2,500 (same diminutive size, still a pendulum driven movement). Another one sold in 2002, again not with Westminster Chimes unit, for $600 per a site we utilize in researching our clock offerings. This clock is much more rare and unique than those clocks.Check out the beautiful curved top on the clock. The case is all intact, with the exception of the carving at the peak of the case. Not sure if carving like rest of case just fell off, or if there was a piece mounted to the front top of the clock at one time. Some minor finish loss to the case. The rear wood door is in place as is the latch mechanism. The red fabric is in place on the inside of the door. The 4 brass like doughnut feet are also still in place on the clock case. Show some finish loss. Beautiful mahogany case on this clock. The clock face is silver with black numbers. Some moderate loss of finish around the wind holes. The bezel is securely attached to the case by the hinge. The beveled glass in the bezel is intact, no cracking or blistering. The front door is very thick with a brass surround, securely attached to the case by the hinges.The movement looks good. The three wind springs feel sound when keyed. The movement has not been serviced or cleaned, we are selling it the way we found it. The clock will come with a wind key. We are selling this clock in running, chiming, and striking condition at this juncture, no warranty intended. There is no representation that the clock is in original condition, or will continue to be in working order. The clock has a Westminster Chime's unit. The clock chimes every 15 minutes, and then chime and strikes on the hour. This is a five gong wire unit. The Winterhalder & Hofmeier Clock stands 8.75" tall, by 6.75" across, by 5.5" (5-7/8" with door latch) wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. HATCH (1816-1879) WAS A CLOCKMAKER IN NORTH ATTLEBORO FROM 1837 TO 1873 MAKING A NUMBER OF DIFFERNT STYLES OF WEIGHT-DRIVEN BANJO AND REGULATOR CLOCKSWHEN I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THE CLOCK CASE AND MOVEMENT MISSING THE 3 GLASSES, DIAL AND WEIGHT WERE MISSING. ALL THE GLASS HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH THE 2 BOTTOM TABLETS REVERSE PAINTED AND GILDED BY TOM MOBERG IN THE EXACT STYLE FOUND ON THE ORIGINAL HATCH CLOCKS OF THIS TYPE. THE DIAL I CUT FROM A PIECE OF IRON, PAINTED IT WHITE AND HAND-INKED THE ROMAN NUMERALS AND THE NAME RIGGS & BRO. OF PHILADELPHIA, A NAME OFTEN FOUND ON HATCH DIALS. RIGGS WAS THE RETAILER OF MANY OF HATCH'S CLOCKS. THE PERIOD CAST IRON WEIGHT I FOUND ON EBAY AND IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE NORTH ATTLEBORO SCHOOL OF CLOCKMAKERS AS THEY ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY USED CAST IRON RATHER THAN LEAD FOR THEIR BANJO WEIGHTS. I ADDED THE PENDULUM AND PENDULUM ROD, AGAIN COPYING WHAT IS FOUND ON HATCH CLOCKS. IN PARTICULAR, THE BOB IS DETACHABLE FROM THE ROD MAKING IF VERY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BANJO STYLE CLOCKS WHERE THE PENDULUM MUST BE SECURED WITH A TIE-DOWN MECHANISM DURING CLOCK MOVEMENT. I ALSO ADDED ORIGINAL PERIOD J-HOOK LATCHES AND A SMALL BRASS ACORN-SHAPED PENDULUM MARKER THAT I MADE MYSELF. THIS WAS SECURED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BLACK PAINTED WEIGHT BAFFLE USING THE SAME HOLES THAT THE ORIGINAL PENDULUM MARKER HAD BEEN FIXED TO THE BAFFLE. NOTE THAT THE VERY THIN BLACK PAINTED WOOD WEIGHT BAFFLES ARE ORIGINAL TO HATCH CLOCKS AND ARE OFTEN MISSING DUE TO THEIR FRAGILITY. THE BACK IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL BEING MADE FROM 5 PIECES OF PINE AS FOUND ON ALL HATCH CLOCKS OF THIS STYLE. I DID NOTHING TO THE FINISH ON THE CASE EXCEPT APPLY A COAT OF QUALITY CABINMAKER'S WAX. THE SIDES ARE GRAIN PAINTED TO LOOK LIKE ROSEWOOD WITH THE GRAINING TOTALLY INTACT AND VIBRANT (SEE PHOTOS). THE HALF-ROUND FRONT PARTS HAVE BEEN VENEERED IN QUALITY STRIPED MAHOGANY. I AM NOT CERTAIN THE VENEER IS ORIGINAL AS MOST HATCH CLOCKS THAT I COULD FIND WERE ROSEWOOD GRAIN PAINTED ON BOTH THE SIDES AND FRONT. NEVERTHELESS, IF NOT DONE ORIGINALLY, IT WAS EXECUTED QUITE A WHILE AGO AS I HAD TO RE-GLUE QUITE A FEW AREAS THAT WERE COMING DETACHED. THERE IS LITTLE QUESTION THAT THIS QUALITY VENEER LOOKS VERY GOOD ON THIS CLOCK, WHETHER ORIGINAL OR NOT.THE BRASS MOVEMENT IS EXACTLY THAT EXPECTED FOR A HATCH CLOCK OF THIS TYPE. IT IS RESTING ON A SEATBOARD AND IS ATTACHED TO THE BACKBOARD WITH 2 SCREWS PLACED DIAGONALLY THROUGH THE BACK PLATE. IN ADDITION IT HAS A RECOIL ESCAPEMENT, A BUTTERFLY SHAPED SUSPENSION BRIDGE, LONG STRAIGHT CLICK PAWL, STRAIGHT PILLARS BETWEEN THE FRONT AND BACK PLATES, AND TRAPEZOIDAL SHAPED FRONT AND BACK PLATES. THESE ARE ALL TRAITS FOUND WITH HATCH CLOCK MOVEMENTS IN THIS STYLE OF CASE. IN THE LAST PHOTO IS A PAGE FOUND IN THE EXCELLENT BOOK TITLED WILLARD'S PATENT TIME PIECES, A HISTORY OF THE WEIGHT-DRIVEN BANJO CLOCK BY PAUL FOLEY (2002) SHOWING A HATCH CLOCK LIKE THIS ONE ALONG WITH DETAILS OF THE MOVEMENT. ALSO SHOWN IN THE NEXT TO LAST PHOTO IS AN EXAMPLE OF THIS CLOCK IN TREASURY OF AMERICAN CLOCKS BY BROOKS PALMER (1977). YOU WILL NOTE THAT AT THE TIME THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED THE MAKER OF THE CLOCK WAS LISTED AS UNKNOWN. THIS WAS BECAUSE THE CLOCKMAKERS OF NORTH ATTLEBORO WERE VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN IN 1977. THIS I ATTRIBUTE, AT LEAST PARTIALLY, TO THE FACT THAT VERY FEW OF THEIR CLOCKS WERE EVER MARKED WITH THE MAKER'S NAME (i.e., NO LABELS OR SIGNED DIALS COULD BE FOUND ON CLOCKS MADE THERE). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SUCH AS ADVERTISING HAS SINCE BECOME KNOWN ALLOWING MANY OF THESE CLOCKS TO BE ASSIGNED A MAKER. ONE OTHER POINT: THE STEEL 'MOON' STYLE HANDS ARE NEW THAT I FIT TO THEIR RESPECTIVE ARBORS. THERE IS A KEY BUT IT COULD STAND TO HAVE A KEY WITH A LONGER SHAFT GIVEN THE DEPTH OF THE WINDING ARBOR DIMENSIONS: HEIGHT = 33-1/4", OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF TOP DOOR = 14-1/2", DIAMETER OF BOTTOM DOOR = 10-3/4", DEPTH APPROXIMATELY 4"IN DESCRIPTIONS OF THIS CLOCK IN A COUPLE OF AUCTIONS THAT I COULD FIND, THEY WERE CALLED BALTIMORE OR FIGURE 8 STYLE CLOCKS. TO BE HONEST I AM NOT CERTAIN WHERE THE BALTIMORE CAME FROM BUT FOR COMPLETENESS I AM INCLUDING IT HERE. THE FIGURE 8 IS UNDERSTANDABLE AND IS VERY SIMILAR TO A FIGURE 8 STYLE CLOCK MADE BY EDWARD HOWARD OR HOWARD AND DAVIS. I SUSPECT THERE WAS SOME COMPETITION BETWEEN HOWARD AND THE ATTLEBORO CLOCKMAKERS AS THEY WERE BOTH IN BUSINESS AT THE SAME TIME AND BOTH WERE MAKING HIGH QUALITY CLOCKS OF A SIMILAR DESIGN. I HAVE SEEN RECENT AUCTION PRICES FOR THIS STYLE OF CLOCK RANGING FROM $750 TO $2800. I AM STARTING THE AUCTION $250 BELOW THE LOWEST SALE PRICE I COULD FIND. WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS!AS YOU MIGHT GUESS I ENJOY RESTORING EARLY CLOCKS, AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE, TO THEIR ORIGINAL STATE.
