HAMILTON 21 Ship Clock with 2 Mahogany Boxes - Working !
Up for sale is a Hamilton Model 21 Marine Chronometer with 3-tier Wooden Box, with Large Brass Gimbal Suspension Ring and one-way Ratcheting Winding Key. This clock also includes an additional large outer mahogany wood "Guard Box" to maximally protect the inner box and clock from harmful sea-salt-air, and from vibration while serving on a ship at sea. The clock is in excellent working condition, and the cosmetic condition ranges from fair to good as indicated below. The box appears lightly used and may be a replacement This item is the large 85-size Hamilton Model 21 marine chronometer ( and not the smaller 35-size Hamilton model 22 chronometer) Only the clock, gimbal ring, inner wooden box, large outer wooden "Guard Box", and 1-way ratcheting winding key are included in this sale, as shown in the photos. The clock is in very good running condition, and is keeping time. Although the Overhaul Due sticker would indicate a clock service date of 1978 (1981 minus the standard 3 year service and calibration recall period), any more recent service history is unknownThe clock runs strong and continuously for approximately 55 hours after a full wind-up.The movement is complete, clean and appears to be in excellent condition. Through 80 years of use and prior servicing there are some scratches, minor scuffs, dirt, oil residue and other signs of wear. See photos of clock interior and mechanism. The clock dial is in good condition, but has some minor scratches, streaks and light patina. There are rub-marks on the extreme outer edge of the dial where the bezel ring clamps down upon the dial. This outer rim wear on the dial is common, and is normally out of view when under the bezel. (See photos). All 4 clock hands are present and are in very good cosmetic condition. The round clock glass is clear, but it has several moderate to scratches, and 1 scuff mark, each of which are difficult to photograph, and are not easy to see under normal lighting conditions. The bezel ring is in generally good condition. The bezel has the aforementioned U.S. Navy Overhaul Due date sticker. See photos of silvered bezel. The Brass Chronometer clock case tub has minor scratches and marks. The clock case tub also has oxidation and residue on the sides (see photos). The chronometer's UP - DOWN winding power reserve indicator hand and its driving mechanism are working properly. The Up - Down indicator was used as follows: When in service aboard a ship, these marine chronometers were always wound every day, and at the same time each day, to ensure maximum timekeeping accuracy. It is the first 24 hours of operation after a full winding of the clock that isosynchronism (stable timekeeping rate) is best achieved. After 24 hours there is sometimes a slight drop-off in accuracy as the mainspring winds down from 24 to 48 hours. The Up - Down indicator was used as a visual verification that the chronometer had indeed been wound-up again for that day, and consistently for every day. If the hand passes the 24 hour mark, then it is time to wind up the chronometer again (even though it would continue running with lesser but still acceptable levels of accuracy). The 3-tier wooden Inner box appears very lightly used and is in very good overall condition. This appears to be a replacement box. See photos. The Inner box drop-handles, latches and hinges are present, are in good cosmetic condition and are working as expected. See photos. The Inner box's time observation glass plate is in good condition with neither any cracks nor any visible scratches. The Inner box's time observation glass plate is in good condition with neither any cracks nor any visible scratches. The large outer mahogany wood Guard Box is in average condition for its 80 year age. There are minor blemishes or scratches on the wood finish. There is minor shrinkage and shifting of 2 of the outer box wood joints, but this is minor. The green velvet cushioned interior has aged, and there is minor fluffing, and dust on some of the green velvet. The brass gimbal ring, its support screws and nuts are all present and are functioning as expected. There is some oxidation and accumulation of tarnish and dirt on the metal gimbal ring surfaces. See photos. The swiveling locking arm is present and is working properly. See photos. The wooden box measures approximately 7.5 inches on each side (excluding side handles)The clock dial is 4 and 1/8 inches in diameter Although the clock is currently functioning well and keeping time, the continued future operation or timing performance cannot be guaranteed, as all of the parts inside the clock were made and adjusted many years ago. Prior service history is unknown.Only the Chronometer clock, gimbal ring, winding key, the 3-tier inner box, and the large outer Guard Box are included in this sale. No other items are included. The chronometer will be carefully secured and balance wheel "Corked" (immobilized for safe transport). The clock will be double-boxed with plenty of protective cushioning, with tracking and insurance for safe delivery. I've shipped over 20 of these chronometers with 100% of them arriving safely in undamaged condition Please ask before buying if you have any questions. Automaton Clock with Moving Cupid, Vienna, 19th Century, Biedermeier, circa 1820
eBay I've had this great clock for many years. It would date the first half of the 19th century. It is signed Ferinane Strahol, Tabon (Austria). The clock movement is a Grand Sonnerie with the two angels move on the quarter hour. It measures 23 inches x 24 1/2 inches wide . It is in perfect working condition after a resent service by a clock conservator. The case is in good condition but is missing a few items of ornamentation see pictures.Be sure to add me to your favorites list! Check out my other items! This year marks 60 years in the antique and art business in the Los Angeles area and at one time Las Vegas and San Rafael, CA. Up until 2006 we had two large stores in Los Angeles, Larchmont Village Estate Jewelry and Antiques was in Hancock Park on Larchmont Blvd and the other on Melrose and called Melrose Antique which specialized in Mid-Century. These days poor health has curtailed my yearly travels to Europe on buying trips. My time is spent searching leads and estate sales. My wife and I have held local estate sales for over 30+ years and have a very competent staff which helps us. We operate the A PLUS Estate Sale Service and Antique Gallery in Fort Mohave, Arizona. My first love are paintings done in France,1900 to 1950. This is called the School of Paris which included artist from around the world who worked and studied in France. I have over 300 such paintings. Many are listed on the Ruby Lane site under our shop name, Larchmont Village Antiques. My wife's specialty is antique jewelry and has been running our stores since 1981. Please watch my listing as we are buying great items daily. Always feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer promptly. SUBJECT TO PRIOR SALE, Since we operate an open store all items listed on eBay are subject to prior sale. GEORGE HATCH, ATTLEBORO, MA BANJO STYLE CLOCK RESTORED, 8-DAY TIME ONLY MOVEMENT
BANJO-LIKE 8-DAY TIMEPIECE CLOCK WITH ROUND BOTTOM ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE D. HATCH OF NORTH ATTLEBORO, MA ca.1860; FULLY RESTORED WITH ATTENTION TO D. HATCH (1816-1879) WAS A CLOCKMAKER IN NORTH ATTLEBORO FROM 1837 TO 1873 MAKING A NUMBER OF DIFFERNT STYLES OF WEIGHT-DRIVEN BANJO AND REGULATOR CLOCKSWHEN I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THE CLOCK CASE AND MOVEMENT MISSING THE 3 GLASSES, DIAL AND WEIGHT WERE MISSING. ALL THE GLASS HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH THE 2 BOTTOM TABLETS REVERSE PAINTED AND GILDED BY TOM MOBERG IN THE EXACT STYLE FOUND ON THE ORIGINAL HATCH CLOCKS OF THIS TYPE. THE DIAL I CUT FROM A PIECE OF IRON, PAINTED IT WHITE AND HAND-INKED THE ROMAN NUMERALS AND THE NAME RIGGS & BRO. OF PHILADELPHIA, A NAME OFTEN FOUND ON HATCH DIALS. RIGGS WAS THE RETAILER OF MANY OF HATCH'S CLOCKS. THE PERIOD CAST IRON WEIGHT I FOUND ON EBAY AND IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE NORTH ATTLEBORO SCHOOL OF CLOCKMAKERS AS THEY ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY USED CAST IRON RATHER THAN LEAD FOR THEIR BANJO WEIGHTS. I ADDED THE PENDULUM AND PENDULUM ROD, AGAIN COPYING WHAT IS FOUND ON HATCH CLOCKS. IN PARTICULAR, THE BOB IS DETACHABLE FROM THE ROD MAKING IF VERY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BANJO STYLE CLOCKS WHERE THE PENDULUM MUST BE SECURED WITH A TIE-DOWN MECHANISM DURING CLOCK MOVEMENT. I ALSO ADDED ORIGINAL PERIOD J-HOOK LATCHES AND A SMALL BRASS ACORN-SHAPED PENDULUM MARKER THAT I MADE MYSELF. THIS WAS SECURED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BLACK PAINTED WEIGHT BAFFLE USING THE SAME HOLES THAT THE ORIGINAL PENDULUM MARKER HAD BEEN FIXED TO THE BAFFLE. NOTE THAT THE VERY THIN BLACK PAINTED WOOD WEIGHT BAFFLES ARE ORIGINAL TO HATCH CLOCKS AND ARE OFTEN MISSING DUE TO THEIR FRAGILITY. THE BACK IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL BEING MADE FROM 5 PIECES OF PINE AS FOUND ON ALL HATCH CLOCKS OF THIS STYLE. I DID NOTHING TO THE FINISH ON THE CASE EXCEPT APPLY A COAT OF QUALITY CABINMAKER'S WAX. THE SIDES ARE GRAIN PAINTED TO LOOK LIKE ROSEWOOD WITH THE GRAINING TOTALLY INTACT AND VIBRANT (SEE PHOTOS). THE HALF-ROUND FRONT PARTS HAVE BEEN VENEERED IN QUALITY STRIPED MAHOGANY. I AM NOT CERTAIN THE VENEER IS ORIGINAL AS MOST HATCH CLOCKS THAT I COULD FIND WERE ROSEWOOD GRAIN PAINTED ON BOTH THE SIDES AND FRONT. NEVERTHELESS, IF NOT DONE ORIGINALLY, IT WAS EXECUTED QUITE A WHILE AGO AS I HAD TO RE-GLUE QUITE A FEW AREAS THAT WERE COMING DETACHED. THERE IS LITTLE QUESTION THAT THIS QUALITY VENEER LOOKS VERY GOOD ON THIS CLOCK, WHETHER ORIGINAL OR NOT.THE BRASS MOVEMENT IS EXACTLY THAT EXPECTED FOR A HATCH CLOCK OF THIS TYPE. IT IS RESTING ON A SEATBOARD AND IS ATTACHED TO THE BACKBOARD WITH 2 SCREWS PLACED DIAGONALLY THROUGH THE BACK PLATE. IN ADDITION IT HAS A RECOIL ESCAPEMENT, A BUTTERFLY SHAPED SUSPENSION BRIDGE, LONG STRAIGHT CLICK PAWL, STRAIGHT PILLARS BETWEEN THE FRONT AND BACK PLATES, AND TRAPEZOIDAL SHAPED FRONT AND BACK PLATES. THESE ARE ALL TRAITS FOUND WITH HATCH CLOCK MOVEMENTS IN THIS STYLE OF CASE. IN THE LAST PHOTO IS A PAGE FOUND IN THE EXCELLENT BOOK TITLED WILLARD'S PATENT TIME PIECES, A HISTORY OF THE WEIGHT-DRIVEN BANJO CLOCK BY PAUL FOLEY (2002) SHOWING A HATCH CLOCK LIKE THIS ONE ALONG WITH DETAILS OF THE MOVEMENT. ALSO SHOWN IN THE NEXT TO LAST PHOTO IS AN EXAMPLE OF THIS CLOCK IN TREASURY OF AMERICAN CLOCKS BY BROOKS PALMER (1977). YOU WILL NOTE THAT AT THE TIME THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED THE MAKER OF THE CLOCK WAS LISTED AS UNKNOWN. THIS WAS BECAUSE THE CLOCKMAKERS OF NORTH ATTLEBORO WERE VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN IN 1977. THIS I ATTRIBUTE, AT LEAST PARTIALLY, TO THE FACT THAT VERY FEW OF THEIR CLOCKS WERE EVER MARKED WITH THE MAKER'S NAME (i.e., NO LABELS OR SIGNED DIALS COULD BE FOUND ON CLOCKS MADE THERE). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SUCH AS ADVERTISING HAS SINCE BECOME KNOWN ALLOWING MANY OF THESE CLOCKS TO BE ASSIGNED A MAKER. IF YOU ARE MEMBER OF THE NAWCC YOU CAN VIEW AN EARLY BULLETIN ARTICLE TITLED ATTLEBORO CLOCKMAKERS BY STEVEN PETRUCELLI, FEB., 1981, #210, PAGES 14-19.I CLEANED THE MOVEMENT & OILED THE PIVOTS AND IT HAS BEEN RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY FOR THE LAST 2 WEEKS. IF YOU KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP A CLOCK AND INSURE THE PENDULUM HAS A UNIFORM 'BEAT' IT SHOULD RUN FINE FOR YOU. ONE OTHER POINT: THE STEEL 'MOON' STYLE HANDS ARE NEW THAT I FIT TO THEIR RESPECTIVE ARBORS. THERE IS A KEY BUT IT COULD STAND TO HAVE A KEY WITH A LONGER SHAFT GIVEN THE DEPTH OF THE WINDING ARBOR DIMENSIONS: HEIGHT = 33-1/4", OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF TOP DOOR = 14-1/2", DIAMETER OF BOTTOM DOOR = 10-3/4", DEPTH APPROXIMATELY 4"IN DESCRIPTIONS OF THIS CLOCK IN A COUPLE OF AUCTIONS THAT I COULD FIND, THEY WERE CALLED BALTIMORE OR FIGURE 8 STYLE CLOCKS. TO BE HONEST I AM NOT CERTAIN WHERE THE BALTIMORE CAME FROM BUT FOR COMPLETENESS I AM INCLUDING IT HERE. THE FIGURE 8 IS UNDERSTANDABLE AND IS VERY SIMILAR TO A FIGURE 8 STYLE CLOCK MADE BY EDWARD HOWARD OR HOWARD AND DAVIS. I SUSPECT THERE WAS SOME COMPETITION BETWEEN HOWARD AND THE ATTLEBORO CLOCKMAKERS AS THEY WERE BOTH IN BUSINESS AT THE SAME TIME AND BOTH WERE MAKING HIGH QUALITY CLOCKS OF A SIMILAR DESIGN. I HAVE SEEN RECENT AUCTION PRICES FOR THIS STYLE OF CLOCK RANGING FROM $750 TO $2800. I AM STARTING THE AUCTION $250 BELOW THE LOWEST SALE PRICE I COULD FIND. WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS!AS YOU MIGHT GUESS I ENJOY RESTORING EARLY CLOCKS, AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE, TO THEIR ORIGINAL STATE. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE WHERE ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS OF THE ORIGINAL CLOCK WAS CLOSELY FOLLOWED IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE RESTORATION.THE CLOCK WILL BE DOUBLE-BOXED AND WELL-PACKED FOR SHIPPING BY FEDEX. TOTAL WEIGHT WILL BE SOMEWHERE AROUND 30 LBS.THANKS FOR LOOKING! (Condition: Pre-Owned)

FULLY AND PROPERLY RESTORED SETH THOMAS NO. 30 REGULATOR WEIGHT DRIVEN CLOCK
FULLY AND PROPERLY RESTORED SETH THOMAS NO. 30 REGULATOR WEIGHT DRIVEN CLOCK Offered for sale is a fully and properly restored Seth Thomas No. 30 Regulator weight driven wall clock. This clock is shown as Item 962 on page 306 of Ly’s Seth Thomas book. It lists 1909 as the date of manufacture and a 2005 value of $4500. The clock case is in great condition and the clock still has the original wavy glass. The downside of the clock is that the weight is a replacement and the original dial had to be professionally redone due to extensive damage. The clock shows well but you need to be aware that the clock has had work done to it to restore it to its present condition. The identical clock just sold at the Schmitt Horan auction house for $2000 and the buyer paid a 25% premium for a $2500 total. I would also point out that the clock that sold at auction also had a redone dial and did not have a fully serviced movement. The movement in my clock has been completely serviced with all pivots polished, all holes properly burnished, and the cable replaced. Case dimensions are 49 inches tall by 19 inches wide by 8 inches deep. Please examine the 11 pictures carefully as they provide a detailed description of this fine timepiece. WHAT MAKES A CLOCK A GOOD VALUE? The rules of economics are fairly straightforward Simply put, it is almost impossible to spend a little and get a lot. Antique and vintage clocks follow these rules as well. You can buy “As Found” clocks for less money. Then you have to pay a shop to go through the movement and when you are done, you have spent more than if you would have bid on the nicer clocks in the beginning. I have tried through the photos to show the basic steps that I do in restoring these wonderful machines to their original state. My goal is to provide you with a quality time piece that will provide enjoyment and be a source of pride in your home for years to come. Equally important to me is to provide you with a clock that I believe will retain its value over the years. That is what I think constitutes real value in antique and vintage clocks. MY PHILOSOPHY ON CLOCKS AND CLOCK MOVEMENTS. The only way to properly repair a movement is to completely disassemble, clean and inspect all parts, and make the needed repairs by proper horoligical methods. This includes the rebushing of all worn holes and the polishing of any rough pivots. The movements are then reassembled, lubricated with a high-quality clock oil and test run for 8 days. This is a very time intensive process but is the only correct way to properly recondition a clock movement. You should expect a movement repaired in this manner to run for ten years trouble-free. I have been doing clock repair for over 36 years. I apprenticed under an Oregon State licensed repairman and have been a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) since 1981. I do not make a living doing this; it has become a passion of mine. I go to estate sales, auctions, and search places like eBay and Craigslist to find clocks that are in need of restoration. Once they are made like new mechanically, I put them up for sale in the hopes of paying for my materials and upgrading my personal collection. My hope is also to provide you with an heirloom to cherish for years to come. PAYMENT AND SHIPPING. People deserve to be treated fairly and to expect that their transaction will be handled as if the business was being done face to face. Read my feedback and you can see that I live by these words. I know that the shipping cost seems high but this is an item of substantial value so it will be sent out fully insured and with signature confirmation. A wooden crate will have to be built and that will require several sheets of plywood due to the size of the clock. The clock will be shipped with the pendulum removed to prevent damage. You will have to remove the dial and the hands to be able to rehang the pendulum. Full instructions will be provided but if this is something that you think is beyond what you are comfortable doing, you should pass on this item. I will provide positive feedback for buyers as soon as payment has been received and I also provide a set of General Clock Instructions that will answer about 95% of the questions that may arise during the set-up of the clock. New Sheffield #230 9 Tubular Grandfather Clock - Original Family Owned!
Herschede Model 230 Sheffield 9-tube Grandfather ClockMy late Father-In-Law purchased this clock brand new as a gift to his family for Christmas 1981. My wife inherited the clock on his passing in 1992. It remained in the family house until 2011 when we finally moved it to our house, where it still resides. It is not currently running, but should not need any repairs, likely just a thorough servicing for it to run. This clock has 3 melody options - Whittington, Westminster and Canterbury. It also has the original, uncommon, and very unique pendulum. This is a beautiful, high-quality grandfather clock that should provide many years of aesthetic beauty, precision functioning, and classic elegance to your home.I will not ship this clock but will be happy to work with you on local pick-up, or with your shipper if you would like to have it shipped. All shipping costs and liability will be the responsibility of the buyer. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
