Bardon Clichy Master Wall Clock Konigsberg Germany Seal 1923 Pendulum Battery

Sold on eBay March 16th, 2024

Bardon Clichy Master Wall Clock Konigsberg Germany Seal 1923 Pendulum Battery

HistoryVery little made it thru the WWII attacks on Konigsberg, Germany. First the shelling from the Royal Air Force inn August of 1944 and then by Soviet shelling in April of 1945. This one of a kind, Master Bardon clock, with a Konigsberg Seewarte seal somehow survived. Whether it was sheltered in the underground German bunkers or in the partial remains of the Konigsberg Observatory it did survive. The Observatory, a semi-circular two story research and observation facility with a brick vault (considered a regional architectural monument) is related to the clock via the Seewarte engraving on the clock seal."Seewarte" loosely translates as Naval Observatory or Oceanic Observatory or it could also be referring to the Atlantic Meteor voyage which mapped the ocean floor with the first sonic equipment and included the Konigsberg area in 1925-1927. The seal on this clock is also engraved Conigsberg, as it was first spelled for a period following the locations inception in 1843 as a mere Prussian settlement called Twangste.A piece of history from a location rich in history. Hitler had envisioned Konigsberg as a museum for everything the Germans had found in Russia Following the end of WWII and the Potsdam Agreement, Konigsberg, Germany became part of the Soviet Union (now Russia) and has remained so ever since. The Soviet Union renamed Konigsberg to Koliningrad. Today Konigsberg is of world interest as a Russian held area that is separated from the rest of Russia by two NATO countries. The situation with Ukraine makes this Russian held area of interest. Russia is most likely where this clock was purchased.Otto Pratje worked at the Konigsberg University with his chief study the geology of sea beds and he participated in the Meteor Atlantic expedition 1925-1926 eminating from Konigsberg. In 1937 he was appointed to establish and direct marine geological section of the Deutshe Seewarte at Hamburg. Both seafaring ventures produced official topographic and administrative maps of Germanys waters. Many dead underwater volcano's rising 1000 ft high in the ocean were identified for the first time with their 1st generation sonar equipment.Clock MechanicsThis Bardon Master clock appears to be one of a kind. Back is marble. Hangs at 52-1/2" long and 12" wide and 7 " deep. This is a battery run master clock with pendulum. Most likely from the Observatory in Koliningrad Konigsberg per the Seewarte seal on the front. Clocks by Bardon, Brillie and Vaucanson all embody similar principles. The coil is in the base. Extremely rare. Made in Clichy, France. Located at Etablissments bardon at the Societe Anonyme de Construction Electrique et Mechanique during the production years 1920-1925. Bardon hanging battery electromagnetic clock with oak case Bardon, Clichy. Charles Edouard GuillaumeThe Nobel Prize in Physics 1920 Precise measurement plays an important role in science. To provide a basis for precise measurements, the metric system and a German legal meter were instituted to define lengths. However, different materials expand differently when temperatures change, which limits the ability to make very precise measurements. In 1896 Charles-Edouard Guillaume succeeded in finding an alloy of nickel and steel that registered almost no change in length and volume as a result of temperature changes. The invar nickel-steel alloy had a significant effect on scientific instruments and incandescent light bulbs and was used in this clock. If you need this item shipped, that would be undertaken on your end. Your shipper would need to pack item and pick it up. If you are willing to make those arrangements it is an option for shipping. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
Vintage Lawson Electric Clock Model #304 Zephyr-pre war

Sold on eBay December 30th, 2023

Vintage Lawson Electric Clock Model #304 Zephyr-pre war

eBay You are purchasing a Lawson Electric Clock model 304 pre-war circa 1937-1940. The clock was first named the Mayfair but the Lawson catalog in 1938 named this model the "Zephyr". The pre-war style Zephyr was only made for a few years and is different thanthe later years same model clock. The early model had ball feet and the inverted "J" trim piece on the left front shows a more gentle curve. Please view the photos provided. Another unique detail of this particular clock is that the back plate is stamped 306 and not 304. Obviously miss marked but interesting and unique making this clock even more special. My guess it as the "Zephyr" model and the Belmont model 306 appeared together in the Lawson publication might explain the error. The back plate is correct but has 306 stamped instead of 304. This maybe be truly one of a kind in addition to this pre-war model rare as well. The metal clock has no dentsand is in very nice condition with a nice patina. There is no Lawson decal on the dial aperture plate which also is consistent with the pre-war period. The clock is untested and without cord. The clock is being sold from my personal collection. O-Scale Brass Pacific Coast Shay

Sold on eBay August 2nd, 2023

O-Scale Brass Pacific Coast Shay

Brass O-Scale Pickering Lumber No. 11 Three-Truck Shay Locomotive – This is a fine example of the model builder’s skills years ago when things were really carefully made and where attention to details counted; from the famous Samhongsa Company in Korea and imported by Sunset Models. A beautifully crafted non-working (requires a belt) scale model of the last major type of Shay locomotive, the Pacific Coast Shay. Many of these geared locomotives were made by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, after obtaining the original design and permission from Ephraim Shay himself. Shay came up with this idea after noticing that the wooden track used in the forested areas of Michigan was not damaged by the rail cars carrying logs even though they were much heavier than the locomotives pulling the cars. He surmised that smaller wheels (36” diameter) was the difference and his design employed the same size wheel as the flat cars used. This geared design was also introduced in The Transportation Exhibits in the World Columbian Exposition of 1893.Pickering Lumber dates to before 1902 when Standard Lumber Company was started which then morphed into Pickering in 1921 remaining in business until the depression of 1930. It was then reincarnated in 1937 and in 1941 purchased their only Pacific Coast Shay from Forest Lumber in Oregon which became the famous No. 11 Shay which was actually built by Lima in January 1929. In logging practice, the locomotive was run uphill facing forward with empty flat cars behind and then, once loaded, was backed down the hill which guaranteed adequate water over the crown sheet. The standard gauge, three-truck, three-cylinder design was very popular providing increased cylinder size (from older models) with greater pulling capacity (38,200 lbs. of tractive power on 12-36” diameter wheels or 25% more), greater weight (181,000 lbs.), smaller turning radius allowing for sharper curves in trackage and with more fuel/water capacity for longer operating periods in the field. These were also used for switching and in industrial areas to move rail cars around. This fine reproduction exhibits all of the careful detailing expected including accurate steel frame details with wooden bumpers, cylinder details including steam supply and exhaust distribution lines and fittings, connecting crank fittings, steam air compressor with related valves and lines, the steel all-weather cab with fully detailed boiler backhead controls, fuel oil bunker with fill lid and vent line in place and the water tank/tender is complete with water hose shown at the ready to put out any grass fires which the locomotive might have accidently set while operating in the field. This model has been beautifully weathered and thoughtfully detailed to enhance and show-off all of the aspects of this wonderful locomotive. Everything from the boiler finish with streaks of residue from rain, steam and grime, cast steel trucks with pinon gears coated in grease, brake shoes, hangers and air lines covered, accurate steel girder frame details with dirt and grime, boiler domes, steam whistle even with pull cord in place, steam generator, brass bell and boiler jacket are all weathered carefully – all of this major effort creates a model that really recreates what this locomotive might have looked like when in use. Engineer and fireman included for scale purposes. The hardcover book “Pacific Coast Shay – Strong Man of the Woods” by Dan Ranger, Jr., published in 1964 by Pacific Railroad Publications will also be included with this exceptional model. I am a collector - not a dealer - and this amazing model, which was purchased used, has been in our collection for over twenty years awaiting its turn to be painted, weathered and detailed by an artist much in demand. It was brought home about 18 months ago and put on display then and is now being offered for sale so that we might expand into other areas of brass locomotive collecting mainly different railway equipment from geared locomotives. Please review all details and photos carefully as no returns are possible - please ask any questions necessary to resolve any doubts or concerns that you may have regarding this rare and beautifully detailed and weathered Pacific Coast Shay No. 11. This fine model will be shipped in its original box with original packing materials, double boxed, at buyer's expense and we recommend shipping via UPS or USPS Priority Mail insured. AT THE 12 IS THE SPEED ADJUSTMENT LEVER.CORRECT WINDING KEY IS PROVIDED. THE SHIPS BELL STRIKE SEQUENCE IS AS FOLLOWS, INCLUDING A BRIEF HISTORY. Mariners have used a unique bell code to tell time at sea for hundreds of years. The code is based on the crew's typical workday routine while the vessel is under way. A ship at sea requires constant attention. The day is thus divided into six four-hour periods, each called a "watch." Similarly, the crew is segmented into three divisions. Division members then stand their individually assigned duties on two watches per day, with eight hours off duty between watches. 1 First Watch 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. 2 Mid-Watch (also Black Watch) 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. 3 Morning Watch 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. 4 Forenoon Watch 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 5 Afternoon Watch 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 6 Evening Watch 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.The watch officer struck the ship's bell every half hour to apprise the crew of the time. A single bell denoted the end of the first half hour and one bell was added each half-hour. Eight bells therefore signaled the end of each four-hour watch. Like centuries of seafarers, you'll soon know the time when the clock chimes, even if you cannot see it.Starting in 1915, all U.S. Merchant vessels over 100 gross tons have, by law, divided the crew into three watches, working four hours on and eight hours off, and turning the dog watches into one evening watch. Lawson 304 Zephyr Desk Clock. 1930's California Streamline Moderne Design

Sold on eBay April 8th, 2025

Lawson 304 Zephyr Desk Clock. 1930's California Streamline Moderne Design

This Lawson Zephyr clock is in working condition and appears to be an unaltered original. It has some surface scratches from routine cleaning over its 85 year life. Its service history is unknown but the assembly screws on the back show minimal signs of wear. The inside mechanism appears clean. In overall good condition with minimal surface blemishes. I have not attempted to polish or clean it with any liquids or abrasives for fear of damaging the patina, preferring to let the aging speak for itself. A true icon of California Streamline industrial design, the Lawson Zephyr model 304-P40 was designed in the 1930s and manufactured by Lawson at various factories in Southern California from the late 1930s onwards. The example listed here bears the manufacturer plaque showing 'Pasadena' which dates this unit between 1940-1942. With a large fan base, the Lawson Zephyr is an iconic piece of functional artwork and resonates with collectors around the world. They can be found in art galleries, museum collections, and have appeared in large auction houses. The Lawson Zephyr clock emerged in the 1930s from Lawson Time, Inc., a company founded by Lindley S. and Harold B. Lawson in Los Angeles in 1933. Initially introduced as the "Mayfair" in 1937, it was rebranded as the "Zephyr" by 1938, possibly inspired by the sleek, record-setting Burlington Zephyr train. The clock's distinctive low, horizontal form, curving silhouette, and use of contrasting metals like brass and copper reflected the era's fascination with speed and modernity, while its innovative digital display--featuring rotating wheels--promised "exact time at a glance." Though long attributed to German designer Kem Weber, a 1938 Lawson catalog credits the design to Paul Feher and George Adomatis, two lesser-known but talented designers who shaped the company's early aesthetic. Crafted in Los Angeles, the Zephyr catered to an affluent clientele, blending cutting-edge technology with Art Deco elegance, and remains a celebrated artifact of 1930s California design.
