Antique Pierret French Miniature Skeleton Clock & Dome 1800s Brass Rare READ

Sold on eBay August 7th, 2024

Antique Pierret French Miniature Skeleton Clock & Dome 1800s Brass Rare READ

This listing is for a small “ miniature ” desk, mantle, or shelf Antique French skeleton clock. It was made by Pierret & co in Paris in the 1860s, however it’s original base plate bearing the makers mark has been lost through time. It has an interesting movement with silk suspension and a beautiful hand painted round enamel dial. I am not sure the exact number of days the movement runs, but I had it running since acquiring it without any issue, except for a brief period when I moved it to take a better photo, and it stopped running after I bumped the movement’s adjustment on the thread. It has since started running again (about 3-4 weeks later) on its own, and has not had any issues since. I am not sure what made it briefly stop, and I do not want to disassemble or tinker with it (it was running when acquired as well) so as not to cause accidental damage. When running, it seems to only need wound around once every 2- 3 weeks or a little less. These clocks are hard to find in the US working or otherwise, and international shipping can be so dicey with a delicate item such as this - Grab this one today for a great deal! It is an excellent piece for collectors, gifting, display / decor, gifting, and more!It has both steel 'moon' hands, which are the antique originals. It looks like the silk thread was re-tied at some point, perhaps contributing to its current hiccup. It is completely unmarked except for an R and an A engraved on the body at the very top front, right behind the adjusting gear to hold the pendulum in the back. (See photos). All other Pierret made clocks of this style that I have seen also have those letters engraved. Unfortunately it is missing the brass base plate that the clock would have originally sat on which bears the full makers mark. It has a glass dome in excellent condition. It has the usual light wear around the rim, concealed by the base when seated, and some very light other wear, but no cracks. It also has a wooden base piece. I believe the base and dome to be the antique originals, or a good antique / vintage replacement. I have seen dome / base combinations in a round as well as a more oval shape on these clocks. The face is also in excellent shape. It is hand painted, with some light discoloration in an area- see photos- it is easily missed when not up close. Victor Pierret was born in 1806. He exhibited in the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. These French skeleton clocks are sometimes known as 'Great Exhibition Clocks' because of that. He was honoured in Paris and London for his work at these exhibitions. He sold many of these skeleton clocks there and over the years afterwards he developed many different styles. This clock comes from a massive estate collection, and was extremely well cared for in a temperature controlled room. Please check back this weekend & next week for multiple other antique & unique clocks I will be listing!Thank you for your consideration, reasonable offers are always considered. Please see photos for details & measurements, comes as is. As with any clock, this one may require set up and/or adjustment after shipment, however rest assured it will be packaged with extreme care. Comes with a vintage non-original winding key. Please note NO International shipping is offered. (International buyers with a valid continental US address are welcome!) (Condition: Pre-Owned)

Outstanding Ansonia "Crystal Palace" No. 1 Clock, 8 Day T&S, Clean & Running

This is an Ansonia "Crystal Palace No. 1" clock, in working condition, complete with Dome. Outstanding Ansonia "Crystal Palace" No. 1 Clock, 8 Day T&S, Clean & Running Outstanding Ansonia "Crystal Palace" No. 1 Clock, 8 Day T&S, Clean & Running Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters SCARCE & POPULAR ANSONIA CLOCK CRYSTAL PALACE No. 1 8 DAY T&S CIRCA 1880s This is a guaranteed genuine antique Ansonia Crystal Palace No. 1 clock. Various different figures are seen in these clocks; this one has the Hunter (or Rifleman) and the Fisherman. It is possible that the base was refinished some years ago, I am not sure. As far as I can tell, everything is ORIGINAL: the statues, the pendulum, dial, hands, AND the glass dome! That makes it especially desirable. Altogether, it stands about 19 inches tall, on a 15 X 6 inch base. The top of the dial is 16.5 inches tall, while the dome itself is 17 inches tall. These were expensive clocks when new, and the first owners tended to take very good care of them. That was not always the case with subsequent owners however, especially if they thought the clock was old-fashioned or hopelessly out of style. In these cases, it was often consigned to a damp basement or attic, or some out-building, and the domes often got broken in the process. This particular example however seems to have escaped such a fate; you can tell it was well cared for throughout its life. There is some loss of gold wash on the statues (I understand it was very thin to begin with, and ordinary household cleaners can easily remove it). There is some roughness to the base of the dome, but nothing that (in my opinion) rises to the level of a chip, and absolutely NO cracks or breaks. I am quite certain the mirror is original, with a small amount of darkening. The dial is good and quite uniform in color. The wood which supports the movement has minimal scarring ( see photos), and actually may be original to the wood used. The movement was rather clean when I got it, but I cleaned it ultrasonically anyway and lubricated it. It is running quite nicely now and strikes the hour and half-hour on a bell. It comes with a key, which is modern. I have seen some date this model as early as 1875. However, the patent date on the movement is 1882, so that probably dates it to the 1880s. The model name seems to have been "borrowed" from the Crystal Palace at the 1851 London Exposition. That glass and iron building, regarded as the first truly "modern" building, enclosed some 19 acres. It was moved to the London suburb of Sydenham about 1854. Although deteriorated, it stood until 1936 when destroyed by a fire. I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "as-is" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. Even then, however, you still have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned or any reason--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Please ask questions and study the photos carefully, as they are part of the description. PLEASE NOTE: this clock will be shipped in TWO boxes, one of the clock itself and the other for the dome. Placing both in one box is an almost certain recipe for breakage! Consequently, the first invoice (which eBay sends out automatically) will not be correct, and payment based on it will not be honored. Wait until you receive a second invoice, which I will send out as soon as I can after the end of the sale. Box #1 will be 20 X 14 X 12 inches and weighs 12 pounds. Box #2 will be 24 X 18 X 12 inches and weighs 10 pounds. A box that size is necessary to protect the dome. Both will be shipped from Zip Code 20601. You may of course run these dimensions through your preferred shipper, OR contact me for a binding cost, which will include the eBay shipping discount. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly. NO RESERVE! MY PLEDGE TO YOU: no surprises! I will provide high-resolution scans; I will fully describe each item, obverse and reverse, positives and negatives, possibilities, likelihoods, what I suspect, and which is which; and I will provide as much historical context as I can. It wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that clocks evolved at an exceedingly swift rate, resulting in greater accuracy, more refined designs, and more frequent appearances in people’s homes. In both the United States and internationally astrological, tall-case, year-long runners, and skeleton clocks are in demand. “E. Howard and Seth Thomas are two of the bigger names that collectors are seeking out right now, Buyers of antique and vintage clocks today range from collectors who own hundreds of them, to the retail buyers who’ve been looking for the right grandfather clock to display in their living room. “Collectors pay close attention to rarity and condition, For early American clocks, they look for original glass tablets, original painted dials, and the original finish or actual wood case. With European clocks, specialists tend to be a bit more forgiving in terms of condition because it has more to do with the movements and gears. A replaced gear on a European clock, for example, may be more acceptable than a replaced tablet or dial on an American clock. Important 19th-Century Styles By the 19th century, recognizable innovations and styles began to emerge across Europe. In France, for example, clocks were fitted with extravagant cases mirroring trends in interior design, and by 1850 carriage clocks decorated with Limoges enamel, porcelain, and gilt metal were becoming exceedingly popular. Meanwhile, Germany specialized in making affordable brass and wooden clocks, most notably cuckoo clocks, which were made in the Black Forest region and exported across Europe. Skeleton clocks were the characteristic choice for British households, churches, and government buildings, as were clocks decorated with Gothic-inspired cases and architectural elements, exemplified most famously by Big Ben. Antique Vienna and English clocks from 1780 to 1920, the most famous and collectible makers produced clocks between 1700 and 1890. “This was the great era of clockmaking, and a time that sparked lots of novelties and inventions in clock movements and cases. Important 20th-Century Styles Twentieth century clocks typically drew inspiration from earlier styles, although the U.S. made, electrically powered “Eureka” clock is especially indicative of the years leading up to the First World War. The heyday of clock manufacturing took place in the first half of the century, and by the 1950s clocks became increasingly minimalistic in design, reflecting developments in modern art and architecture. Today, clocks are available at a wide range of prices, styles, and sizes, evidencing the long-lived history of these highly valued, sophisticated timekeeping devices High end valuable clocks tend to be handmade, rare, or limited edition pieces made or decorated with precious materials, such as gold, diamonds, rubies, mother of pearl enamel, porcelain, and high-quality wood. Clocks made by important designers, like Abraham Louis Breguet, or reputable manufacturing companies, like Ansonia, are also highly prized as premium collectible pieces. Antique Wall Clocks Wall clocks, which were first made during the 16th and 17th centuries, are among the earliest styles of clocks designed for display within the home. They not only tell time but also serve as sculptural works of art adorning the room. One of the most fashionable styles of antique wall clocks is the Ansonia hanging clock, made by Ansonia Clock Company, which originated in Ansonia, Connecticut in 1851 and moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1878. Ansonia clocks are usually made of a combination of brass and high-quality wood and decorated with ornately executed designs, such as mini-friezes, classicizing figures, and floral and geometric designs inspired by ancient Greek architecture. Bidermeier clocks, made in Germany and Austria between 1815 and 1848, are another popular type of antique wall clock. Produced primarily for a burgeoning middle class knowledgable of the value of furniture and interior design, Bidermeier clocks exhibit simple yet elegant features. One of the main identifying characteristics of this refined style is the juxtaposition between the sleek, straight lines of the clock’s torso and the delicate curves of the baroque and gothic motifs decorating the upper and lower portions of the case. Vintage Mantel Clocks Mantel clocks were first made in France and were typically placed above the fireplace alongside vases or sculptural figurines. Also known as chamber clocks, early mantel clocks oftentimes had handles, enhancing their practical function as portable timekeeping devices that could be easily picked up and moved from mantel to bookshelf to tabletop; however, later versions departed from this design. Vintage mantel clocks, especially those made during the Art Deco period and mid-century, are valued today for their simple yet elegant geometric designs. Antique Cuckoo Clocks Cuckoo clocks were first made during the 18th century in the Black Forest region of southwestern Germany, although they also have a long history in Switzerland and Austria. These clocks are of course famous for the automaton cuckoo bird that moves in tandem with musical notes each time the clock strikes the hour. Cuckoo clocks are prized for their lively, interactive quality and handmade, intricately carved designs. Antique versions are typically decorated with forest and hunting scenes and include animal motifs, most notably hounds, deer, rabbits, pheasants, and other woodland creatures. Antique Grandfather Clocks Grandfather clocks are named after the 1876 song “My Grandfather’s Clock” (“My grandfather’s clock was too large for the shelf, So it stood ninety years on the floor”). Also called long-case, tall-case clocks, and floor clocks, grandfather clocks are freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clocks, often outfitted with elaborate ornamentation, especially on the hood of the case. Invented by the English clockmaker William Clement in 1670, the grandfather clock quickly became popular across Europe and assumed a variety of forms. American grandfather clocks, such as those made in 19th-century New England, are usually eight feet tall and exhibit a wide, sturdy base, whereas French clocks often have slim bodies and flat or slightly rounded hoods. Many antique grandfather clocks include highly detailed metal dials illustrating the passage of the sun and phases of the moon. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
