William Gillett started as a clockmaker in Hadlow, Kent. He moved to Clerkenwell, London, and in 1844 to Croydon, Surrey, where he was later (circa1854) joined by Charles Bland. By 1886 nearly 100 hands were employed by the firm which obtained the raw iron, copper and tin so that the whole process was completed at the Croydon site.

Brevete / Fournisseur du Roi'.This item is 2 pieces…the clock base and the dancing figures. Total height is 18.5” and width is 9.5” at the clock base. The clock does not work. There are chips on the top back edge of the clock base which do not show from the front. See photos #9&10 The dancing figures stand about 10” high and there is a chip on the bottom of the man’s yellow scarf. See photo #4 This clock came from an ancestor’s estate (b.1913) from Norway. First a note about other sellers here on ebay claiming to be selling REBUILT movements. They claim they install bushings but don't show it in their pictures...I asked them to show me the bushings they installed but they refuse to do so. Why? because there are no bushings to show!! Another claims his movements are rebuilt and then uses the term "recently serviced" which essentially means nothing...to me it could mean it was only oiled or adjusted but certainly not REBUILT. Another seller doesn't know how to keep the laquer from coming off the brass. If they don't know that they shouldn't attempt clock repair!! This is an antique M. Weldon shelf or mantle clock, currently running, with a good label. M. Welton 4 Post, 30 Hour Shelf Clock, T&S, Original Weights, Working M. Welton 4 Post, 30 Hour Shelf Clock, T&S, Original Weights, Working Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters WEIGHT DRIVEN SHELF or MANTLE CLOCK M. WELTON 30 HOUR T&S CIRCA 1840 - 1844 This is an antique weight driven, 30 hour, 4 post mantle or shelf clock. It has an excellent label of M. Welton, at 54 St. John Street. Merrit Welton's brothers, Hiram and Heman, took over Eli Terry Jr's shop in 1842, after he died. Some researchers believe Merrit bought his movements from them, while others believe he sourced movements mostly from Elisha Mantross, and occasionally from others. This movement is unsigned. It is uncertain exactly what dates Merrit was active in the clock business at the St. John Street address; he began about 1840, and was there at least through 1844, possibly a few years after. This is a nice example of his work. It stands about 26 inches tall, 15 inches wide, and 5 inches deep. The case has been refinished. The lower glass is obviously a modern replacement, as are the hands. The wood dial is period and fits well, but as there are small holes at the corners which do not meet the internal supports, may not be original to this clock. The "wafer" weights are original. It has been restrung within a few years, and the cords are good, so I did not restring it. The movement was clean, so all I did was to lubricate it. It is currently running and striking correctly. Though running, I sell all mechanical and electrical devices in AS-IS condition. You still have the right to return it if dissatisfied for a refund of your purchase price, not to include shipping. Should there be damage in shipping, it will need to be handled through an insurance claim.
