 BANJO-LIKE 8-DAY TIMEPIECE CLOCK WITH ROUND BOTTOM ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE D. HATCH OF NORTH ATTLEBORO, MA ca.1860; FULLY RESTORED WITH ATTENTION TO D. HATCH (1816-1879) WAS A CLOCKMAKER IN NORTH ATTLEBORO FROM 1837 TO 1873 MAKING A NUMBER OF DIFFERNT STYLES OF WEIGHT-DRIVEN BANJO AND REGULATOR CLOCKSWHEN I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THE CLOCK CASE AND MOVEMENT MISSING THE 3 GLASSES, DIAL AND WEIGHT WERE MISSING. ALL THE GLASS HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH THE 2 BOTTOM TABLETS REVERSE PAINTED AND GILDED BY TOM MOBERG IN THE EXACT STYLE FOUND ON THE ORIGINAL HATCH CLOCKS OF THIS TYPE. THE DIAL I CUT FROM A PIECE OF IRON, PAINTED IT WHITE AND HAND-INKED THE ROMAN NUMERALS AND THE NAME RIGGS & BRO. OF PHILADELPHIA, A NAME OFTEN FOUND ON HATCH DIALS. RIGGS WAS THE RETAILER OF MANY OF HATCH'S CLOCKS. THE PERIOD CAST IRON WEIGHT I FOUND ON EBAY AND IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE NORTH ATTLEBORO SCHOOL OF CLOCKMAKERS AS THEY ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY USED CAST IRON RATHER THAN LEAD FOR THEIR BANJO WEIGHTS. I ADDED THE PENDULUM AND PENDULUM ROD, AGAIN COPYING WHAT IS FOUND ON HATCH CLOCKS. IN PARTICULAR, THE BOB IS DETACHABLE FROM THE ROD MAKING IF VERY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BANJO STYLE CLOCKS WHERE THE PENDULUM MUST BE SECURED WITH A TIE-DOWN MECHANISM DURING CLOCK MOVEMENT. I ALSO ADDED ORIGINAL PERIOD J-HOOK LATCHES AND A SMALL BRASS ACORN-SHAPED PENDULUM MARKER THAT I MADE MYSELF. THIS WAS SECURED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BLACK PAINTED WEIGHT BAFFLE USING THE SAME HOLES THAT THE ORIGINAL PENDULUM MARKER HAD BEEN FIXED TO THE BAFFLE. NOTE THAT THE VERY THIN BLACK PAINTED WOOD WEIGHT BAFFLES ARE ORIGINAL TO HATCH CLOCKS AND ARE OFTEN MISSING DUE TO THEIR FRAGILITY. THE BACK IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL BEING MADE FROM 5 PIECES OF PINE AS FOUND ON ALL HATCH CLOCKS OF THIS STYLE. I DID NOTHING TO THE FINISH ON THE CASE EXCEPT APPLY A COAT OF QUALITY CABINMAKER'S WAX. THE SIDES ARE GRAIN PAINTED TO LOOK LIKE ROSEWOOD WITH THE GRAINING TOTALLY INTACT AND VIBRANT (SEE PHOTOS). THE HALF-ROUND FRONT PARTS HAVE BEEN VENEERED IN QUALITY STRIPED MAHOGANY. I AM NOT CERTAIN THE VENEER IS ORIGINAL AS MOST HATCH CLOCKS THAT I COULD FIND WERE ROSEWOOD GRAIN PAINTED ON BOTH THE SIDES AND FRONT. NEVERTHELESS, IF NOT DONE ORIGINALLY, IT WAS EXECUTED QUITE A WHILE AGO AS I HAD TO RE-GLUE QUITE A FEW AREAS THAT WERE COMING DETACHED. THERE IS LITTLE QUESTION THAT THIS QUALITY VENEER LOOKS VERY GOOD ON THIS CLOCK, WHETHER ORIGINAL OR NOT.THE BRASS MOVEMENT IS EXACTLY THAT EXPECTED FOR A HATCH CLOCK OF THIS TYPE. IT IS RESTING ON A SEATBOARD AND IS ATTACHED TO THE BACKBOARD WITH 2 SCREWS PLACED DIAGONALLY THROUGH THE BACK PLATE. IN ADDITION IT HAS A RECOIL ESCAPEMENT, A BUTTERFLY SHAPED SUSPENSION BRIDGE, LONG STRAIGHT CLICK PAWL, STRAIGHT PILLARS BETWEEN THE FRONT AND BACK PLATES, AND TRAPEZOIDAL SHAPED FRONT AND BACK PLATES. THESE ARE ALL TRAITS FOUND WITH HATCH CLOCK MOVEMENTS IN THIS STYLE OF CASE. IN THE LAST PHOTO IS A PAGE FOUND IN THE EXCELLENT BOOK TITLED WILLARD'S PATENT TIME PIECES, A HISTORY OF THE WEIGHT-DRIVEN BANJO CLOCK BY PAUL FOLEY (2002) SHOWING A HATCH CLOCK LIKE THIS ONE ALONG WITH DETAILS OF THE MOVEMENT. ALSO SHOWN IN THE NEXT TO LAST PHOTO IS AN EXAMPLE OF THIS CLOCK IN TREASURY OF AMERICAN CLOCKS BY BROOKS PALMER (1977). YOU WILL NOTE THAT AT THE TIME THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED THE MAKER OF THE CLOCK WAS LISTED AS UNKNOWN. THIS WAS BECAUSE THE CLOCKMAKERS OF NORTH ATTLEBORO WERE VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN IN 1977. THIS I ATTRIBUTE, AT LEAST PARTIALLY, TO THE FACT THAT VERY FEW OF THEIR CLOCKS WERE EVER MARKED WITH THE MAKER'S NAME (i.e., NO LABELS OR SIGNED DIALS COULD BE FOUND ON CLOCKS MADE THERE). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SUCH AS ADVERTISING HAS SINCE BECOME KNOWN ALLOWING MANY OF THESE CLOCKS TO BE ASSIGNED A MAKER. IF YOU ARE MEMBER OF THE NAWCC YOU CAN VIEW AN EARLY BULLETIN ARTICLE TITLED ATTLEBORO CLOCKMAKERS BY STEVEN PETRUCELLI, FEB., 1981, #210, PAGES 14-19.I CLEANED THE MOVEMENT & OILED THE PIVOTS AND IT HAS BEEN RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY FOR THE LAST 2 WEEKS. IF YOU KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP A CLOCK AND INSURE THE PENDULUM HAS A UNIFORM 'BEAT' IT SHOULD RUN FINE FOR YOU. ONE OTHER POINT: THE STEEL 'MOON' STYLE HANDS ARE NEW THAT I FIT TO THEIR RESPECTIVE ARBORS. THERE IS A KEY BUT IT COULD STAND TO HAVE A KEY WITH A LONGER SHAFT GIVEN THE DEPTH OF THE WINDING ARBOR DIMENSIONS: HEIGHT = 33-1/4", OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF TOP DOOR = 14-1/2", DIAMETER OF BOTTOM DOOR = 10-3/4", DEPTH APPROXIMATELY 4"IN DESCRIPTIONS OF THIS CLOCK IN A COUPLE OF AUCTIONS THAT I COULD FIND, THEY WERE CALLED BALTIMORE OR FIGURE 8 STYLE CLOCKS. THE FIGURE 8 IS UNDERSTANDABLE AND IS VERY SIMILAR TO A FIGURE 8 STYLE CLOCK MADE BY EDWARD HOWARD OR HOWARD AND DAVIS. I SUSPECT THERE WAS SOME COMPETITION BETWEEN HOWARD AND THE ATTLEBORO CLOCKMAKERS AS THEY WERE BOTH IN BUSINESS AT THE SAME TIME AND BOTH WERE MAKING HIGH QUALITY CLOCKS OF A SIMILAR DESIGN. I HAVE SEEN RECENT AUCTION PRICES FOR THIS STYLE OF CLOCK RANGING FROM $750 TO $2800. I AM STARTING THE AUCTION $250 BELOW THE LOWEST SALE PRICE I COULD FIND. WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS!AS YOU MIGHT GUESS I ENJOY RESTORING EARLY CLOCKS, AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE, TO THEIR ORIGINAL STATE.  This beautiful Black Forest Railway Railroad Cuckoo Clock is a true antique gem. Only marks I found were Made in Germany on the movement and the pendulum Featuring a mechanical movement with three weights and I assume, a 1/4 hour cuckoo chime sequence. Weights only move for the time and it kept time over night. However the pendulum was not adjusted correctly and the clock was a bit slow. Measures approximately 17" wide by 17" tall by 8" deep.I believe this to be a railway station model and is handcrafted with a bulls eye pendulum.It is an I believe, original piece from the Victorian era (1837-1900) and is perfect for any room. This vintage cuckoo clock is a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of antique decorative collectibles.I don’t confess to being an expert, just some google searching. The fact it has wood inlays is indicative of other period railroad clocks I have seen. Not sure how many days this clock runs I only ran it over night since the other two weights don’t move.  eBay IMPORTANT CIRCA 1900 FOLDING TRAVEL CLOCK - NEAR PRISTINE CONDITION produced expressly for Tiffany & Co. by A. Wittnauer Co., New YorkBeyond doubt, the best surviving historic example of its type.This rare antique travel clock is from my personal collection. Time has come for these horological gems to find new homes. Elegant Tiffany and Co. designs produced at the close of the 19th century through the early 21st century comprise a significant category of noteworthy clocks curated since 1970. I acquired this travel clock "sight unseen" long ago. Outwardly distinctive features - oversize folding case, dial treatment and apparent condition - were sufficiently compelling attributes to justify purchase. Little did I expect physical examination would reveal an illustrious provenance. Inscriptions on the hinged cover, back and front of the movement convey a remarkable story. The handsomely decorated interior cover is stamped Made for Tiffany & Co. by the Majestic Watch Co. Switzerland. An engraved script monogram underneath incorporates conjoined initials A W. Back plate of the nickel finished movement carries the identical Made for... inscription, along with "three 3 adj." and "fifteen15 jewels." Front plate of the movement exposed after removal of hands and dial provides another puzzle piece. It is die stamped MAJESTIC above A. Wittnauer.16 year old Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer came to New York City in 1872. In 1885, the brand name Wittnauer first appeared on watches. A. Wittnauer Co. did not manufacture movements. They were products of well established Swiss companies.The script monogram on the movement cover is that of Albert Wittnauer. Overarching quandaries... why is the dial not signed Tiffany & Co.why does the Wittnauer name only appear in an area hidden from all but repairmenThis travel clock (or an identical model absent "8 DAYS" on the dial) was manufactured in Switzerland with sole intent of retail sale exclusively by Tiffany & Co. The preeminent NYC jeweler commencing business in 1837 did not include Albert Wittnauer's late 19th century design among their prestigious merchandise. Thus, identification of the clock as a Tiffany & Co. product on the dial was not granted. NOTE: The movement was disassembled (including removal of mainspring from barrel), ultrasonically cleaned and rinsed, elements checked for wear, reassembled and lubricated with high-grade Swiss grease and two viscosity oils. Dust cover, bezel and thick beveled crystal were hand cleaned as was the case. I conditioned the leather covers and folds with saddle soap. Meticulous restoration ensures reliable operation for years. Typical labor and materials cost of professionally overhauling Swiss alarm clocks of this complexity is $350.  This is a slight variation on column and cornice clock made by Orton, Preston, & Co, ca. 1835-1837. It is currently working. CLOCK ORIGINAL CASE, MOVEMENT, & MOST PARTS 30 HOUR T&S CIRCA 1837 - 1837 This is a variation on a "Column and Cornice" clock made by Orton, Preston & Co., of Farmington, Connecticut. Details about this company are somewhat lacking; some researchers believe they bought some of their movements from Ephraim Downs. It is pretty well established that they purchased some of the equipment from Marsh and Gilbert after Marsh relocated to Ohio about 1834. Other of their movements are very similar to those made by Marsh & Gilbert. The movement in this clock appears to be one of those, and I believe is Type 7.153. This type movement can be seen in Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock by Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor, Figure 164, page 298. The firm seems to have been operational circa 1835 through 1837. I have also read that while their production took place in the twilight of the wooden works era, they were aiming for a more affluent clientele that the more common half column and splat clocks were geared towards. The workmanship and appearance of this clock is certainly consistent with that! This clock stands approximately 34 inches tall, 20 inches wide, and 7 inches deep. The movement is a 30 hour time and strike (on the hour only). The small uppermost glass is original, as (I believe) is the dial glass. The lower two glasses are old; I doubt however that the mirror is original. The lower glass may be original, but I cannot guarantee that. It has been nicely refinished. The dial, hands, pendulum bob, and weights are original. One toe on one of the claw feet has broken off. The weight cords were replaced pretty recently and the movement is clean. All I did to the movement was to lubricate it where appropriate. It has been running and striking nicely ever since. Though presently working, please note I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "AS-IS" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. On top of that, I have read that when new, these wooden movements were expected to have a 20 year life expectancy--yet here we are, nearly 200 years later! You still have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned or any reason--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Please ask questions and study the photos carefully, as they are part of the description. By the way, for safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box at no additional charge to you.
