Geochron Kilburg World Clock - Original
This is an original Geochron World Clock, manufactured by Kilburg circa 1977 and completely factory refurbished including new maps in 2001. It's been wall mounted in my Study in the same position ever since, but because we have been away for much of the time it's been unused with power off for most of these approximately 24 years. The conditions that it's been kept under have been perfect for its preservation and it runs as new.I've used it for enjoyment and to give an idea of the dusk line to determine propagation for my ham radio hobby. Now computer apps such as HamClock give a much more complete picture of radio propagation and it seems to me that someone else can better enjoy the Geochron.I'll be glad to provide further information and pictures if requested although I won't disassemble the unit and would hate to take it down from the wall (it's heavy!) BTW, I'll remove the mounting bracket from the wall and include it with the unit.I can personally deliver the Geochron to a purchaser on Long Island, NY or New York City, or ship in the original shipping carton in which the unit was received from its factory overhaul. Geochron World Wall Clock
eBay Physically, the Geochron looks like a framed world map, about 2? x 3? ft. in size. The colorful map is an endless belt that is driven slowly from left to right by an electric clock motor in synchronism with the rotation of the earth. It’s a clock, it’s a conversation piece, it’s a hand-made work of art. All known legal time zone boundaries are delineated on the map by dark blue lines which in most cases, converge on lettered pointers on the top edge of the map. These letters identify the standard time zones and also represent the short wave radio prefix for that zone. The Geochron is the only mechanical chronometer to simultaneously display the current time and the sun’s Event Horizon simultaneously, anywhere in the world. As an added extra of this one-of-a-kind project, they are custom made to every order! Kilburg was a mechanical engineer who perfected his craft and knack for ingenuity while living in Luxembourg. After moving to America, Kilburg devoted his life to creating innovations such as the car cigarette lighter, the first automatic dialing telephone, as well as the automated maraschino cherry pitter. After more than 50 years, the Geochron is still assembled by hand in Portland, Oregon. It takes four clockmakers three days to build a clock, then a “burn-in” on the test wall. Each Geochron passes through multiple quality inspection checks along the assembly process, including a rigorous 28 point inspection over two days prior to shipping. The Geochron has been used by world renowned business leaders, dignitaries and diplomats and even by those in the White House. This incredible Kilburg Geochron Clock is LEGENDARY in the clock world. Meticulously handcrafted, the Geochron is a rare fusion of art and science, and the only mechanical geographic chronometer ever made. From 1962-2007, Geochron was based in Redwood City, CA, supported by machinists and contractors in the San Francisco area (1987 New York Times article). In a day before the internet, the Geochron was really the only way to represent the Sunrise / Sunset in real time on Earth. It was a big hit, all the way to White House. These clocks are status symbols and have been seen in films, museums, scientific displays and high finance board rooms for decades. One hangs in the White House as well.This clock has been a part of my family for years and is in perfect working order. I took photos of it outside in proper light so that you can see the incredible mahogany wood that makes up the frame. This is the REAL WOOD edition of their clock.
