Antique Seth Thomas Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters SETH THOMAS PILLAR & SCROLL CLOCK ORIGINAL CASE, MOVEMENT, & MOST PARTS 30 HOUR T&S CIRCA 1825 - 1830 This is an antique Seth Thomas "Pillar and Scroll" clock, made circa 1825-1830. The finials are reproductions, the numerals on the dial have been strengthened (good job of it), and the lower glass has been repainted in place (fair job, not great), but as far as I can tell, everything else is original! The movement appears to be the standard Seth Thomas movement, Snowdon Taylor's subtype 1.513, and I believe it to be original to this case. The tips of the upper scrolls are good, with NO repairs evident. The original lock is present, but does not appear to be functional; someone long ago added a knob to the door for opening and closing. The pendulum bob is original, as are the hands. A small amount of the wood on the hour arbor has been lost and a previous repairman added a brass washer and two small pins to stabilize the hand. One of the tips of the lower scroll, on the skirt, appears to have gotten broken and either repaired or replaced, but it is not very noticeable. There are various old veneer repairs--see photos, as they are part of the description. As stated in the condition report, I cleaned the movement, restrung the original weights, and of course reassembled it. It is presently working nicely. Please note however that these wooden movements were made with an expected 20 year lifespan, and it has now been nearly 200 years. They can be temperamental, and there is no way to predict when something will break. Consequently I think it will work upon receipt and proper set-up, but I cannot guarantee that. It has probably been refinished, some years ago I would say. It is really a nice-looking clock! Seth Thomas essentially copied Eli Terry's design under agreements they made in 1818 and 1822. However, Terry sued Thomas in 1826 and again in 1827. Some historians believe these lawsuits were really to dissuade others from copying Terry's designs, while others think that Terry was serious in the suits. Either way, the suits were settled later in 1827. Note that the label on this clock does not acknowledge Terry or his design, suggesting it was made prior to settling the lawsuit. I sell all electrical and mechanical devices in "AS-IS" condition as they can easily get out of adjustment or even broken in transit. Even then, however, you still have a 30 day inspection period during which the item can be returned or any reason--however it must be returned in the same condition in which I shipped it, meaning if there is damage, an insurance claim must be made. Please ask questions and study the photos carefully, as they are part of the description. By the way, for safety, the weights will be shipped in a separate box. Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the eBay mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through eBay, and probably more quickly. This is a Pillar and Scroll clock made by Eli (Jr.) and Samuel Terry, ca. 1825-1830. It is currently working . Eli & Samuel Terry Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs! Eli & Samuel Terry Pillar & Scroll Clock, 30 Hour T&S, Original Glasses, Runs! Click images to enlarge Description Heritage Matters ELI & SAMUEL TERRY PILLAR & SCROLL CLOCK ORIGINAL CASE, MOVEMENT, & MOST PARTS 30 HOUR T&S CIRCA 1825 - 1830 This is an antique "Pillar and Scroll" clock made by Eli (Jr.) and Samuel Terry, sons of Eli Terry Sr. Most sources date this partnership between 1825 and 1827, though a few say it extended to about 1831. The finials are wood rather than brass; a few years ago, I would have unequivocally said they are replacements, but I have since read that some P&S clocks originally had wood finials. Consequently, I am not sure. The two side finials match; while the center one is very close, it is not exactly the same shape as the others. I added the two side arms, left and right top. Everything else appears to be original though--the dial, hands (which have been painted black), the pendulum bob, and weights. Those weights have been restrung within a few years, and the cords appear to be good. The dial looks like a typical Terry dial, though it is now attached by wood screws rather than pins. It has two filled-in holes at its base; these appear to be where wood screws once attached it to the cross strip, but those holes were stripped. And eagle-eyed eBayer pointed out the initials "ST" in the upper center-right of the dial. This has been seen on other Samuel Terry clocks, whether it is his initial or an otherwise unknown dial painter who happened to have the same initials, I cannot say. The scroll is slightly warped backward, but not distractingly so. Perhaps the best thing about this clock it its ORIGINAL reverse painted lower glass! It does have some fairly minor losses, but is quite good actually--see photos. The movement appears to be the standard Terry movement, and I believe it to be original to this case. The tips of the upper scrolls are good, with NO repairs evident. The original lock is present, but does not appear to be functional; the escutcheon is missing. There are a few old veneer repairs--see photos, as they are part of the description. It has the more-or-less standard dimensions of a pillar and scroll clock, close to 30 X 16 X 4 inches. The label has darkened with age, but is mostly present. The clock is presently working nicely, with its 30 hour movement, striking only on the hour. Please note that these wooden movements were made with an expected 20 year lifespan, and it has now been nearly 200 years. They can be temperamental, and there is no way to predict when something will break. Consequently I think it will work upon receipt and proper set-up, but I cannot guarantee that.
